Performer accused of accosting 2 women
By Associated Press, 3/28/2004

MADISON, Wis. -- Singer Howie Day has been charged with misdemeanor counts of criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct in connection with an encounter with two women on his tour bus.

Day, 23, was the opener for Barenaked Ladies on Wednesday at the Alliant Energy Center. He was charged on Friday.

According to the criminal complaint, Madison police were called to Day's tour bus at the arena about 1:30 a.m. Thursday after Day allegedly locked a woman in a bathroom on the bus for refusing a sexual advance. He then broke the cellphone of another woman trying to call police.

According to the complaint, Day and his band members invited four or five women on their tour bus while signing autographs after the show. The group sat around drinking and talking, and one of the women went to the back of the bus to use the bathroom. Day followed her in and tried to kiss her, but she refused his advance.

Day became upset, left the bathroom, slammed the door and then blocked it when she tried to leave, the complaint said.

Another woman tried to get Day to let her friend out, then tried to call police on her cellphone. Day allegedly grabbed the phone and broke it in half, then yelled at her to get out.

"That was probably wrong of me," Day reportedly told an officer, referring to breaking the woman's cell phone. "But I felt violated."

After the first woman got out of the bathroom, Day allegedly threw beer on them, the complaint said.

Day admitted grabbing the cellphone as the woman tried to call police and breaking it, but said he thought it may have already been broken, the complaint said.

He denied throwing beer on the women.

Asked for his version of events, Day told an officer that it is common practice for consenting females to "hang out" and "get together" on the bus after shows. He said there must have been a misunderstanding if the women went to the bus with intentions other than to "hook up or to drink," the complaint states.

He told the officer that the woman told him, "We didn't come here to hook up," officials said. He allegedly told her, "Then leave."

Day was released from jail after posting $850 bail. He is scheduled for a court appearance on April 1.

"But I felt violated."

That's maybe the most pathetic part, haha

I once met a girl who (proudly) had gone down on Howie Day. I was like, who? This is Howie Day, I guess.

Perhaps his ego was bruised. He must have caught it in something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been on Howie's tour bus. I saw a little spin-the-arrow game hidden behind a two-liter of coke but all of the options were pretty innocent, like kiss-on-the-cheek type stuff.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

But what "cheek" is it referring to?

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:45 (twenty-two years ago)

WHO THE HELL IS HOWIE DAY????

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no idea, he can't be very good if he is named Howie though.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

WHO THE HELL IS HOWIE DAY????

(This was actually my first reaction too. If El Diablo, VengaDan and I don't recognize this creature, it does not really exist.)

he's from Maine. Why couldn't he have run over Stephen King? 2 birds with one stone and all that

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd rather Stephen run over him.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Back in college, a lot of people on the concerts comittee wanted to get him to play though he never came while I was there. He was described by them as a one-man Radiohead, which created a hilarious mental picture until I actually heard his stuff.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 29 March 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

He sounds more like a one-man Dickhead.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 29 March 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Better description of his music too.

Vinnie (vprabhu), Monday, 29 March 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

He'll never open for Tori Amos again!

When I saw him he did do this thing where he played some rhythm chords into a sampler, then set it to playing back as a loop, then drummed on the guitar for a bit and started it looping, then did a little "lead" bit that he looped, so that by the time he got into the song proper he had his own accompanyment band backing him up. I thought it was a cool idea and was surprised I'd never heard of anyone else doing it.

nickn (nickn), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)
