you don't even have to record it. scrawl it on a piece of paper and you've got the copyright.
however...
that scrawled piece of paper isn't going to get you very far in court. and a recording on a cd-r won't get you much further. legally, you've got the copyright. but what you need, should you ever find yourself in court, is *proof* that you've got the copyright. that's what actual copyright registration is for. you want that documentation.
