online for free. The name of this site is copybyte.com and it allows you to upload your
songs, ebooks, websites, or whatever else you may have that needs to be copywritten.
Membership is free and so are the registrations, it is a quick and easy way to document
the time and day that your original material was created. Its free and better than not
copyrighting at all. Each registration has its own serial number and you can view all of

as soon as a song is recorded in some form, it is automatically protected by copyright.

i'm pretty sure anyhow.

you don't even have to record it. scrawl it on a piece of paper and you've got the copyright.

however...

that scrawled piece of paper isn't going to get you very far in court. and a recording on a cd-r won't get you much further. legally, you've got the copyright. but what you need, should you ever find yourself in court, is *proof* that you've got the copyright. that's what actual copyright registration is for. you want that documentation.

I recommend that *all* songwriters - no matter how small-scale - register with BMI. It's free and you can do it online. That way you've got some proof of ownership in case the issue ever arises.
