"I heard that song 'Stan' by Eminem, it's really good! So I bought that Marshall Mathers album. I like it a lot!" and other evidence that my mom is putting away her Carole King records for good

- talked at length about Public Enemy with me the other night on the phone
- said she liked the "strange poetry" in an Underworld song she heard
- mentioned how strange it was that the town of Johnsburg IL, near my hometown, was mentioned in a song by the Handsome Family as well as being the title of a Tom Waits tune.
- asked my brother to burn her a copy of the new Wire CD so she could listen to it in her car
- talked about driving home from Marshall Field's the other day listening to Gavin Friday and Sigur Ros and how it relaxed her after dealing with "evil rich women and their feet"

she's 56, it's all a little strange.

What happened between Carol King and Eminem? What has she been listening to the last 30 years?

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 29 March 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I Played my mother Sigur Ros Yesterday.
Her Response was "Why Would You Wanna Listen to This?"
I Don't Think She Even Knows Who Unerworld is

I think the interim period was filled with lots of U2 and R.E.M., maybe.

Dude, your mom is cool.

my mother has been enjoying the Mars Volta album.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Monday, 29 March 2004 03:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 29 March 2004 04:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom Waits release his first album when your mother was 26, thats not too strange i hope.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 29 March 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom likes this Brian Eno ambient mix CD I burned for her, but only because she thinks it's new age.

Hey, maybe it is.

My mother asked if Courtney Love was still married to Kurt Cobain the other day.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, you guys are lucky. The apex for my mom was getting into Orbital during the mid-90's but the last few years she's sunk into a Ricky Martin/Kelly Clarkson/Josh Groban level of unter-hell.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad was a low-level Cure obsessive while I was in high school. He couldn't get with the industrial bands, though.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Gear, she's cool, be thankful.... it is strange though!

jed_ (jed), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Has she been messing with drugs?

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom killed a guy once.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Moms can be pretty cool.

My mother likes the Moody Blues, Buffalo Springfield, and this really obscure guy named Daniel Lavoie (whose one album is damn catchy). This is the good news... the bad news is that my father has been listening to Celine Dion, Sarah Brightman, Barbara Streisand, Kathy Lee Gifford and, wait for it... Buffy St. Marie (Ya'll can look up who that is, if you don't know) for as long as I can remember... How I've not grown up derranged, I've not figured out.

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

C'mon, man, Buffy St. Marie was essential for anyone who grew up on Sesame Street. She rules.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom is into Bedhead, Paul Simon, Belle & Sebastian and the quieter Yo La Tengo stuff.

I would be absolutley amazed if she ever began listening to hip hop. Probably fairly amazed even if she began listening to Sigur Ros (she has a hard time with post-rock.) As surprising as her taste gets is Legend.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 29 March 2004 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

My mom thinks Pet Sounds is a great record. That is about the only thing in my record collection that my mum likes.

If Eminem can smaple Dido, he can smaple Carol King and bring yr Mom full circle. Did you know You're So Vain is actually about Slim Shady?
