As uttered by my sister. he had a really great sense of humour and was really into his music. I feared the worst.

Episode 2 shortly...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 March 2004 10:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Two guys at a party a few years back:

"Hey - you also have the new Robbie Williams record? Isn't it great? We have the same taste in music!"

Er, try NO TASTE, just being fed whatever is in the TV commercials ...

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 29 March 2004 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, had this happen before. Always dud.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Monday, 29 March 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

You went to the Frankfurt Schule, Jay Kid? Note: two guys did not say GREAT taste, obv your comment implies the opposite in every single yawning way. Remember Dizzee Rascal (or insert yr favourite *artist*) is also part of the mass culture.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Monday, 29 March 2004 10:58 (twenty-two years ago)

When I moved into this house, my housemate's now ex-boyfriend got really excited that I was into music. "I've got this amazing album I think you'll love, let me lend it to you!" And what was it?

Semi-fucking-sonic.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 29 March 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I meet him eventually, not in a "Hi this is my brother" way, more 'incidentally' thank god. So, he's a great allround musician fair enough, and he is into his music, can't fault him, and his latest demo is a videotape, song about the days of the week and how great the weekend is, to a 'funky' style oh god umm, I'm off for a drink...

(part three later)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 March 2004 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud for sure. I usually try to avoid discussing music with random people so I don't have to go through the whole "ohh, don't you just love [insert god awful band / artist name here]!".

Mil, Monday, 29 March 2004 11:06 (twenty-two years ago)

worse still is when you're friends with someone and you kind of respect their taste in music and you find out one day that they like a band/artist you think is really really shithouse.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Monday, 29 March 2004 11:11 (twenty-two years ago)

there's another possible scenario, and one that i have experienced more than once - being introduced to / meeting someone who does indeed share my taste, but their personality is at total odds with mine

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 March 2004 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmm. "card carrying NF members" springs to mind. their musical taste was quite broad (not oi/skrwdrivr anyhow).

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 March 2004 11:16 (twenty-two years ago)

ahhh this person rubbed me up the wrong way with supertramp. Everything else I was down with and then I found out the awful awful truth.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Monday, 29 March 2004 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(part three)

Our paths collide some time later, as part of the "turkish nightclub" summer job, me with a dance troupe and him with his funkee friends. Solo, he seems OK but with his crew, suddenly too cool to talk to 'our' lot. Which winds up most of our lot. Privately, I can work out he's not that pleased to be here anyway...

Anyhow, eventually he gets a minor hit single, is mentioned in the same sentences as Jamiroquai (as in "oh god do we need another Jamiroquai"), gets a 'residency' on a channel five program, and his hit is reworked for the tweenies.

You know, full props to him. He's doing whatever, and seems to be getting something back from it. Which is no bad. Just not my cuppa.

"fin"

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 March 2004 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

My sister had me come down to a coffee shop to meet a girl that she thought I would get along with. Almost immediately my sister says, "So [girl] is really into music, just like you!"

Me: Is that so?
Girl: Yeah, I just love all kinds of music!
Me: Sure, so do I.
Girl: Except country, really.
Me: Oh, that's too bad, there's a lot of great...
Girl: So what do you like?
Me: Oh, uhh, you know, it's... why don't you tell me what you like and I'm sure I'll be... you know, I'll definitely be into something.
Girl: Oh, okay! Sure! So... do you like... let's see... let's start with something classic... Lynyrd Skynyrd?
Me: Well.. I mean... Not really... but "Every Mother's Son" is a good song. I like that song, yeah.
Girl: Okay, okay. Well what about The Doors?

And so on, and so on.

cws (cws), Monday, 29 March 2004 11:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Me: Hi
Them: Hey, nice to meet you. I hear you're really into music.
Me: Well, yeah.
Them: I'm a music lover too.
Me: Oh yeah?
Them: So what kind of music do you like?
Me: Oh, lots really. Anything good.
Them: Me too. I like just about everything -AC/DC, Green Day, even Prince.
Me: Wow, you're so eclectic.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 29 March 2004 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Even better is when I walk into a Strawberries or some other lame chain and the young, bubbly assistant store manager asks me if I need any help finding something. I'm always tempted to say, "Why yes. Could you point me to the post-war Blind Willie McTell?"

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Monday, 29 March 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

wouldn't he point and say "out there, in the world somewhere" with some certainty?

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 29 March 2004 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Jesus, (no pun intended)
It was just that these guys (whom I knew, sorta) obviously weren't making enough of an effort to claim a music taste per se (ie. shopping for particular records, ordering non-k-mart stuff home, buying music on the net etc.). they didn't have any taste as in conscious taste, they were buying whatever was being big time promoted at the time. this is not a critique of them, not everybody wants to center their life around music, but the irony was just so thick that i remembered the situation.
I am aware of the fact that Dizzee, Tortoise, Anticon or whoever critic's darling is also a part of popular culture and that they are being distributed to me, albeit by other channels. But that does not mean that I am not also seeking music out by myself, my friend. It is my job, after all ...
Oh, and by the way, I never bothered with the Frankfurters. The language was just too timid and boring for my liking.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Monday, 29 March 2004 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

move in with a flatmate that has relatively good taste in music only to find that he is now obsessed with a wanna-be 'Irish' neu-punk band called the Dropkick Murphys = Utter Dud

webcrack (music=crack), Monday, 29 March 2004 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

re: cws and others, the "tell me what you like and I'm sure I'll be into something" line is trouble, that's just Murphy's Law waiting to happen. I have to consciously cut myself off from saying that because nothing good ever comes from the subsequent conversation.

I've had some success with opening my CD carrying case and showing the other person what I happen to be listening to that day. Yes, this is a nerdy/musical obsessive thing to do, but anyone who wants to know me might as well learn what I'm like right off the bat.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

This friend of mine wanted me to meet her roommate because she wanted to be a 'rap journalist' or something and 'liked the same white shit' that i did. So I go to lunch with her and it is as follows:

Me: So...what are some of your favorite albums?
Her: Uhhh....I can't think of any.
(This is always a bad sign. Typically, it's a hard question, but someone even remotely into music can pick maybe one album they really fancy.)

Me: Okay. So what exactly are you into?
Her: Well, I have really eclectic taste. I think hip hop is really important, I mean, I like Eminem, of course, and Jay-Z. But I like a lot of rock like Evanescence, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, oh, and COLDPLAY.
(Here's a fun fact: you ever meet a black person into music that isn't rap or R&B, 9 times out of 10, one of these crazy choices is going to be Incubus or Coldplay. I don't know why exactly, either.)

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Barry: you're absolutely right and I was even cringing myself when I typed it out. But at the same time, my exuse being that I was already uncomfortable enough and trying to balance that with an attempt to please my sister by being at least a bit approachable, I couldn't bring myself to throw out whatever I was listening to at the time (you know, "Oh, Acid Mother's Temple a lot lately. Some Les Rallizes Denudes"). I mean, I figured she would at least like The Rolling Stones or something.

But yeah, that line never works.

cws (cws), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey guys, you should meet my friend Jim. He's just as narcisisstic and self-absorbed as you lot are.

39 Steps + 40 Winks (39 Steps + 40 Winks), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I met 'im. we have different interests. TSTL!

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

i resemble that remark

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I dissemble that rejim.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 10:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I very rarely meet people who like the stuff I do.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

replace 'very rarely' with 'never' and its otm.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I've honestly never had this happen. Are there really people so unworldly that they think two newly-introduced people "being into music" is a coincidence? People who really *aren't* "into music" are freaky and sterile and make me think of Marge Simpson. Even my boss likes Savage Garden.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, 39 Steps + 40 Winks, someone we know very very well did exactly this to me about you!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 11:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I never meet anyone who likes music to the same extent really, except on here.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, 39 Steps + 40 Winks, someone we know very very well did exactly this to me about you!

Hey C#4, who could you be talking about there then?

39 Steps + 40 Winks (39 Steps + 40 Winks), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I see....

39 Steps + 40 Winks (39 Steps + 40 Winks), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but why moan about it? People who are like, uh, so into like, music, as to like, dismiss an introduction to a comrade on the grounds of similar, like, interests, is just uh, well, y'know.

They should be grateful. Don't get out much, y'see.

39 Steps + 40 Winks (39 Steps + 40 Winks), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

...and i still think you're a cunt.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

(Here's a fun fact: you ever meet a black person into music that isn't rap or R&B, 9 times out of 10, one of these crazy choices is going to be Incubus or Coldplay. I don't know why exactly, either.)

tenth time's a charm

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Dido!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

nb this is not a race thing but a scientific FACT that everyone like either Incubus, Coldplay, or Dido, or two of the three, but strangely enough... never all three at once!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Simply always dud. For many reasons

- you typically are introduced to someone dud
- the friend consequently becomes a dud for thinking you like the same shit as that person, or simply having you labeled as a music nerd (however correct that may be)
