Oh God No to be banned.

That thread title was the scariest thing I've ever seen on ILM.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 29 March 2004 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm always wondering why they haven't got around to it yet. First Napster then Audiogalaxy - it can only be a matter of time.

Soulseek is the only reason I have a computer and broadband connection.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

All the RIAA use slsk anyway, they need to get their tunes from somewhere.

I'm always wondering why they haven't got around to it yet. First Napster then Audiogalaxy - it can only be a matter of time.
Soulseek is the only reason I have a computer and broadband connection.

Both AG and Napster had a central organisation with servers so it was easy to shut them down.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Also slsk just doesn't get as many US users, not by a long shot.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Both AG and Napster had a central organisation with servers so it was easy to shut them down.

So does Sl5k :-(

There are plans to re-intoduce separate servers I believe, which was done in the early days, but at the moment Sl5k is centralised

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw this thread title and knew it wasn't true, you're all far too gullible...

oop gotta go the Wallet Inspector has arrived

stevem (blueski), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

it occurred to me last night that maybe Slsk's biggest problem is the trouble it has in handling large amounts of files being opened to share at once. if too many are opened at the same time it can't handle the refresh the next time you launch it. maybe this explains why search results have been much poorer in the last few months than they were back in the Summer?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 29 March 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually had a hint of fear because I had just lost my connection and can't seem to get back on. :(

As for the network, there is a central server that handles logins and such, but as opposed to Napster, AudioGalaxy, et al. it does not handle searching, thats done in a distributed fashion. I'm not sure how this effects all the legal crap, but I thought it was worth a mention.

Really when it comes down to it, the thing that makes slsk so great has little to do with how it's built and a lot to do with the users. Somehow it became the music-geek filesharing service. There are a ton of people with well organized collections of music-geek music. Try and find Neu! 2 on something like Kazaa or whatever. On slsk you'll get a crapload of results mostly organized so that the results are in folders called something like "\Music\Neu!\Neu 2" and the files will all be either well tagged or well named. Then people right click, hit "download folder" and they've got the whole album, ripped and encoded by the same person so it doesn't suddenly get LOUD and quiet.

Oh and steve, it doesn't open all those files. The client sequentially opens the files in your shares when it first starts up to figure out bitrate, etc and caches that data. From then on out, it only has the files open that its reading (people are downloading), writing (you are downloading), and probably a few now and then for configuration, userlist, etc.

Search results are probably poorer because the network kind of "boomed" over the past year, and it's not really designed to handle so many people (well). So instead of having a bunch of music-geeks near you (network-wise), you have more 14 year old girls taking up those spaces. Your search has to move farther across the graph to get the same results. And the further out the queries go, the less likely they are to get back to you. For example, about 1/4-1/8 of all people who download from me now have nothing shared or only a handful of random assorted files shared, whereas it was like 1/25 or something like that back in the summer.

God I'm bored and drank too much coffee this morning. I wrote a freaking manual here.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Monday, 29 March 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Manual much appreciated, though.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 29 March 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

does anyone understand the new random port thing in the latest beta version? It seems like it only opened this port the first time I launched it, and now it's stayed on that port ever since. How exactly does this keep ISPs from finding you?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I would be okay with slsk being banned. It would level the playing field, so to speak.

Though I would miss my little chats with "poopenthusiast" and "TouchMyPussy101".

david lee roth, Monday, 29 March 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It's rather naive to think you can somehow still keep it secret. I don't understand this furtive attitude of "slsk is a haven for music stealing that the RIAA would just love to shut down, if only they somehow knew of its existence!." Please. They know and they don't care that we're trading Neu! with each other while [current Top 40 artist's album here] is swarming all over Kazaa etc. etc. Plus the high percentage of non-American users as aforementioned gives the RIAA even less incentive. Oh no, they're going to scare away 100,000 Americans from slsk while the remaining 5 million global users (figures totally pulled out of my ass) keep using it with impunity! Right now paranoia and miserly sharing practices are more of a threat to slsk than external forces.

I actually bought a brand new copy of Neu! 2 on CD.. and sold it off used 'cause I didn't much like it. I just find it funny that the music-geek example du jour is one I know I'm not searching for.. :) I have found slsk handy for hip hop mixtapes..

The indie record store where I got the Neu! record (DC CD) has since gone out of business, sadly.

it's a shame you can't make lossless digital copies of candy bars that don't degrade the value of the original in any way.

it seems the "stealing" bit is actually a bit of a moot point, according to the only actual proper empirical analysis of the data on downloading, as it's apparently not affect sales one jot.

the aliens are stealing my thoughts!!!!! where's my tinfoil hat

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

over-saturated market = why sales are down (it's not even about cost), simple as that. one of the main advantages of p2p sharing is that we can actually get to hear far more music than it would be even possible for us to buy even if we wanted to buy it all (90% of what i download i very much doubt i would've bought anyway blah blah, so the s'tealing' falls way down the priority list really).

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(it's not even about cost)

anecdotally i believe cost is in part becoming more and more of an issue.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

And (sadly) people who download tend to use mp3s to replace CDs/records.

splooge (thesplooge), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

people who think downloading isn't affecting sales clearly don't work in record stores.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 13 September 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

But is that due to p2p applications? or is it also due to people buying music mail-order over the internet, or people using legitimate online downloading? Or some combination of all 3?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Monday, 13 September 2004 11:07 (twenty-one years ago)

OR the fact that a HUGE portion of music industry sales for for the last 15 years has been back-catalogue CDs. you know, people starting to build CD collections, and buying CD versions of albums they already had, etc. i had access to a lot of research into this (work-related stuff a while ago), and a significant slow-down in sales was directly attributed to back-catalogue titles. people had accepted the CD format, bought all the old albums they wanted, and here we are.

and YES, P2P affects sales too - i'd be crazy to claim it didn't - but it wasn't the primary factor if you looked at a lot of the numbers. it does make better headlines, though.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 13 September 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yes but p2p affects sales in the upward direction too. according to that seemingly well-research paper someone linked to, the effect on sales is reliably 0.

dick, Monday, 13 September 2004 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it definitely affects how much money I spend on music. this is probalby a good thing though because I really spent too much money on music. I'm just averaging out my lifetime allotment these days.

kyle (akmonday), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You are all missing the point. Jess is referring to the times when 'customers' walk up to the counter with a pile of records and just as he is about to ring up the price, they throw them all in his face, shout "HA HA! Fooled ya - I'm off to download them from soulseek, asshole!" and run out the shop laughing.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I wonder how many times a day that happens to poor Jess.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even think he works in a record store, which makes it even more humiliating.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

SOULSEEK TO BE SUED

Last week we reported that French record labels were going after four file-sharing applications, including Limewire and the BitTorrent client Vuze. Now, just days later, two other French organizations are to continue this crackdown and sue Soulseek.

SACEM, the French association for music producers and SCPP, which represents record labels including Universal, EMI, BMG, Warner have filed a complaint against the filesharing application.

The industry bodies argue that Soulseek, an application created by former Napster programmer Nir Arbel, is designed to permit unauthorized access to copyrighted works. According to a French law adopted in 2006, distributing such software is an offense that can lead to a 3 year jail sentence, as well as a fine up to 300,000 euros.

While Soulseek can be used to share any type of file, it is almost exclusively used to share music. Soulseek has a multitude of sub-communities, each dedicated to their chosen musical genres. The members can be incredibly passionate and many of them are experts in their field. Although mainstream music is available, the majority of the files shared on the network are underground independent music.

On the Soulseek website, it is clearly stated that the intention of their application is not to infringe copyright. Instead, it aims “to help unsigned and/or independent artists find a place in the ever-growing music industry, in a place where discussion and the creation of music can take place.”

Similar to other music sharing communities such as the BitTorrent sites What.cd and Waffles.fm, many members are artists themselves, who share their music freely. True to this spirit, members of the Soulseek community founded Soulseek Records (or SLSK Records), a non-profit netlabel where artists publish their music for free, under a Creative Commons license.

Instead of supporting this creative platform, the French music industry continues its witch-hunt, effectively killing their own business. If they are successful, this case, or the lawsuits against the other four p2p clients, will undoubtedly impact other filesharing applications.
