Have you ever heard of www.recordstorereview.com?
I found this website sometime ago and it's been a very reliable resource since. So I just would like to encourage you to submit your favourite record stores in your town.
Here's what it's about:
" The premise is simple. Most record buyers travel around from time to time and their first concern in a new city is to find where the best stores are. Often, this isn't even about the records themselves, but the fact that record stores are often located in the more interesting parts of town and are run by people knowledgeable in local fringe interests.

It is our sincere hope that this directory will help the novice and avid record collector to branch out and expand their collections, through visiting more of the stores listed within. At the root of this is one's enjoyment of music, which we strongly believe to be an irreplaceable indulgence in life."

i'll just say that while their marketing tactics could be a little more upfront, i had never heard of the site, just checked it out, and am pleasantly surprised (at least for NYC).

although i searched upstate NY and could not find teh bunnybrane.

other good source for nyc are paper magazine (now pretty unusable due to a site redesign) and this out of date list.
