I like the sound of Pan Pipes! Surely I am not alone in this.

Only classic if played by an actual satyr; most definitely dud if played with prerecorded synth backing by Peruvian guys in the subway.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 29 March 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

B-b-but why is it dud? They make a pretty sound!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Because they're essentially a franchise -- I've seen/heard the same schtick in subways in NYC, London, Paris, St. Petersburg, and Helsinki; I'm sure there are more. Same costumes, same repertoire ("El Condor Pasa" et alia), same canned karoake accompaniment.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard the same pop song in shops in London, Paris, Barcelona, Helsinki, etc etc. and I still like it!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

same repertoire ("El Condor Pasa" et alia),

The ones in Paisley do The Power of Love by Jennifer Rush. The ones in Glasgow do Abba. This gets a little wearing after a while.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't eat in McDonald's, and I like my buskers idiosyncratic. I live by choice in a big filthy city, so a pretty sound isn't the sole point of attraction for me musically. Hence, Destroy for me, "S" for you, I suppose....

(x-post)

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

ABBA!!!!!

OK my 'serious point' is - what is it about the sound of pan pipes that makes it such a touchstone of awfulness in music? I have a few thoughts on this and will post tomorrow if I can remember what they are. Meanwhile you just keep being edgy!

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

It is because you always get subjected to them when you get put on hold by large companies, thereby associating them with shitting yourself when you have to try and convince your bank manager to give you an extension on your overdraft. Or something.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Furthermore, I have yet to hear anyone use them to make music which is actually any good (recognizing that there is undoubtedly traditional music, or music which draws upon it a non-cheesy fashion, from South America that uses this instrument -- however, I haven't heard it and thus can't reference it). It's not the instrument per se, it's the usage.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

soft. core. porn.

Kim (Kim), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't believe there's been fifteen posts on a thread about pan pipes.
Dud, because I really don't give a rats ass about them. And NdP's last post is otm.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 02:37 (twenty-two years ago)

There is not one instrument in the known universe that is entirely worthless and has no chance of being put to good use. Except the flute.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Early Mylene Farmer records make tolerable/forgivable use of panpipes, or things that sound like panpipes.

Captain Sleep (Captain Sleep), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 09:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe only tolerable/forgivable if you REALLY like Mylene Farmer; potential dud-fodder otherwise.

Captain Sleep (Captain Sleep), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i like pan pipes. even though i know it is WRONG.
i find them relaxing. and, while we're on the subject, i like some of those cds they play in hippy shops - though i'd never buy one.

christ, the shame. this is like coming out all over again..

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

there is a great bit in Aguirre, Wrath Of God where they say to one of their Indian slaves - "You! Play us some music to cheer us up!" so the slave starts fuh fuh fuhing away on his panpipes and they all kill themselves.

In Beirut I saw a recording of the greatest hits of Abba played on the panpipes.

DV (dirtyvicar), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

sixteen years pass...

Threw some loose change at Zamfir's "Theme from the Light of Experience" due to its cool cover and damn great title track. Unfortunately, the rest doesn't sound much like that song (ambient, funereal goodness), but this alone was worth my 50 cents: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tgf5K3S_1V8

(Just rewatched Aguirre too, so it seems I've got pan pipes on the mind.)
