first WC and the Maad Circle record = classic Kwaanzabot = extra-classic
― Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 28 January 2008 20:56 (eighteen years ago)
coolio has his moments and i don't just mean on the maad circle records either
fuck yeah 'county line' is classic, so is "I Remember", Fantastic Voyage. Gangsta's paradise I thought was garbage after the first couple listens.

I met a girl a couple of weeks ago who loves "Gangsta's Paradise" but had no idea it was based on a Stevie Wonder song. She's 24, though, so I guess there's still hope.

That’s a good life! Almost 30 years of fame and fortune, two completely different songs in the canon (Gangsta’s Paradise and Fantastic Voyage). RIP, rest easy.

Thinking about that time in 2018 when Steve Gunn played a solo acoustic show at the Resident in DTLA to about 50 people. Coolio was there. He introduced himself to Steve after the show, proclaiming fandom & gushing w/praise. The few of us Headz lingering around were in awe. RIP— DJ Plum Nellie (@plumnelliesound) September 29, 2022

Dang. Pretty sure he was the first rap artist I was aware of as a kid. RIP.
It's weird after a quick re-read of that new p4k 90s song list that he didn't make the cut. "gangsta's paradise" was fucking everywhere.
― Western® with Bacon Flavor, Thursday, 29 September 2022 05:15 (three years ago)
man, this is a tough fucking blow. he was my favorite rapper circa "fantastic voyage." the dude just oozed charisma. always had nothing but props from me. his pre-fame life was quite a story.
rest well.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVIHTC--CQs

Remember the time one of the British tabloids decided to make a brief scandal about violent gangsta rap lyrics and the line they chose for the front page was "You better watch how you're talkin', and where you're walkin' / Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk"
― link.exposing.politically (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 29 September 2022 07:34 (three years ago)
Talked about this with a grade 7 class this morning; not one student out of 25 had heard of him (one had seen Dangerous Minds). Wanted to play "Fantastic Voyage," but couldn't find a clean version.

Remember when Coolio did a gig in Preston, ran into a group of random students outside afterwards and went back to their place, where he made Caprese Salad, Chicken á la Daaaamn and Peach Crumble, and they jammed Gangster's Paradise. RIP Coolio. Never forget his appearance on Irish daytime chatshow Open House, who, legend has it, booked him by mistake. They hadn't arranged backing dancers, so he made the middle-age production crew dress up and do it instead. Best TV ever. pic.twitter.com/gVxehs4rlt— James Cotter (@sirjamesofcots) September 29, 2022

compelled to revisit my soul this afternoon -which i haven't heard since it was new- and it's about as satisfying as a revisit should be. i remember being underwhelmed at the time and thinking he had lost the plot, but time tells the truth again, as i'm finding it really well produced and pleasantly consistent. not a lost classic or anything of that sort, but it has a solid r+b slant to it that simply works. just solid radio funk; lots of wahwahs and deep synth basslines. and again- his charisma was just unreal! he was never going to get any hiphop quotables, but he always sounds in command of the track, with plenty of heart to accompany the whimsy. kind of like a west coast busta rhymes. my favorite thing of the era was the soundtrack song "it's all the way live" which was another redux of a lakeside jam, in which he actually got some of the og dudes from lakeside to ride along. good jam.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-fBqTXz5CIY
just. man. you really don't know what you've got til it's gone.

RIP. He was getting into a car one day as I was leaving work. I blurted out “Hey, Coolio!”. He looked at me and smiled and replied, “Hey, Homie!” and shut the door. Seemed like a genuinely nice dude.

while canvassing against CA’s gay marriage ban i came upon a big gated estate with a “fuck the dogs beware of owner” sign. i rang the bell and out ran the four meanest-looking dogs i’ve ever seen.then coolio opened the door. i shouted my spiel and he yelled “you know i’m down!”— josh androsky (@ShutUpAndrosky) September 29, 2022

RIP Coolio, just 59. Many years ago, I spent a week with him for a magazine cover story (Details, March 1996). He grew up an asthmatic kid in Compton; as an adult, he was funny and sly and complicated. I hope he's riding dragons somewhere. The opening of the article: pic.twitter.com/WfoqlkMpsz— Gavin Edwards (@mrgavinedwards) September 29, 2022

welp the futurama episode -maybe his last credited performance ever?- went live today and it's easily the highlight of latest season so far. i was able to suspend disbelief for a little while and it was just as brief as all of his past appearances. but the fucking "in memory of" credit is what got me. just bawling uncontrollably for the last 30 minutes.
