I met a girl a couple of weeks ago who loves "Gangsta's Paradise" but had no idea it was based on a Stevie Wonder song. She's 24, though, so I guess there's still hope.

That’s a good life! Almost 30 years of fame and fortune, two completely different songs in the canon (Gangsta’s Paradise and Fantastic Voyage). RIP, rest easy.

Thinking about that time in 2018 when Steve Gunn played a solo acoustic show at the Resident in DTLA to about 50 people.

man, this is a tough fucking blow. he was my favorite rapper circa "fantastic voyage." the dude just oozed charisma. always had nothing but props from me. his pre-fame life was quite a story.

Talked about this with a grade 7 class this morning; not one student out of 25 had heard of him (one had seen Dangerous Minds). Wanted to play "Fantastic Voyage," but couldn't find a clean version.

compelled to revisit my soul this afternoon -which i haven't heard since it was new- and it's about as satisfying as a revisit should be. i remember being underwhelmed at the time and thinking he had lost the plot, but time tells the truth again, as i'm finding it really well produced and pleasantly consistent. not a lost classic or anything of that sort, but it has a solid r+b slant to it that simply works. just solid radio funk; lots of wahwahs and deep synth basslines. and again- his charisma was just unreal! he was never going to get any hiphop quotables, but he always sounds in command of the track, with plenty of heart to accompany the whimsy. kind of like a west coast busta rhymes. my favorite thing of the era was the soundtrack song "it's all the way live" which was another redux of a lakeside jam, in which he actually got some of the og dudes from lakeside to ride along. good jam.

RIP Coolio, just 59. Many years ago, I spent a week with him for a magazine cover story (Details, March 1996). He grew up an asthmatic kid in Compton; as an adult, he was funny and sly and complicated. I hope he's riding dragons somewhere.

welp the futurama episode -maybe his last credited performance ever?- went live today and it's easily the highlight of latest season so far. i was able to suspend disbelief for a little while and it was just as brief as all of his past appearances. but the fucking "in memory of" credit is what got me. just bawling uncontrollably for the last 30 minutes.
