and is it worth buying on DVD?

Yes and Yes Jed, but you need a multi-region player.

Or you speak nicely to me and I might be able to help!

I really loved that documentary, and not a small part of that love is because I really like seeing images of NYC from that era. It's easily one of the best documentaries I've ever seen, it's totally worth your time/money. The new dvd has a LOT of extras too!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 13:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah. It's good!

it FUCKING rules.

also seek any of the "Video Graf" series....vol 6 is nice.

I'm not sure it's worth buying, but it's quite good and definitely worth a rental.

subgenius (subgenius), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I got it off of Netflix a few months back. That may be a good option, since I'm not sure how many rental stores will carry it.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I'm not sure why you would buy a DVD if you haven't already seen it. But then again, I don't own any DVDs or videos whatsoever, so who knows.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:41 (twenty-two years ago)

It's pretty good, really interesting stuff about early hip hop culture, with a main focus on graffiti and breaking and some other shit on rapping and such. the extras are good too, with modern interviews with the people involved. many are soundtracked by Def Jux music too. It's a good buy.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw it for the first time a couple years ago and enjoyed it. dunno if I'd buy the DVD, although the extras do make the deal more appetizing.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I think its definitely worth copping; the dvd extras are worth it alone - its incredibly interesting to see where all the characters from the movie ended up. Plus its got hundreds of photographs of NYC trains that you can just scroll through.

It's not worth buying any DVDs in my opinion. But I do own it on DVD so make of this what you will.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

(Obviously it is worth seeing though.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

well if you don't subscribe to Netflix and your local rental places suck, what other option do you have then to buy it?

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Borrow it from someone who bought it?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Find someone who will draw you a storyboard version of it that you can read?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Steal it from the web?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

An option: Netflix has a free trial thing where your first one or two rentals are free, and then you can quit - you could always pull that scam.

I figure that if a dvd is reasonably priced, buying it new without having seen it is really no different than doing the same with books and cds - how many books have you ever bought that you'd already read?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Also, since most dvds are in the $8-20 range, it's not much different than paying to see it in a theatre, but with the added bonus of getting to watch it as many times as you want.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 22:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Question: What is the song running over the end credits of the documentary?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

The DVD is $25.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's a great documentary, but I was disappointed with the follow-up on the extras. I realize they're called "extras" for a reason---it's like getting hot fudge on your ice cream for free and you're supposed to say thanks and not complain. Things is, if you're going to try to add an epilogue of sorts to what was an extremely thorough doc, I think this need to be equally meticulous. Some amazing characters from the doc disappear in the follow-up (like that genius guy with one arm...what happened to him?). Indeed the people they did catch up with were riveting to watch.
