This is like one of those guess the weight of the cake competitions.

236.

NickB (NickB), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean, there are dozens on CD across various labels you can get hold of, and then hundreds of cassette-only releases in Pakistan too.

Yes, a very fat man who made many records and died. Jeff Buckley liked him lots, too. He's dead also.

From what I understand there are more than 1,000 LPs out there of the vinyl variety.

I have 6 CDs. One is a double-disc. So 7 then. Nine if you count the Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan/Michael Brooke colab ones. They're all every single one of them the HAWT SHIYAWT. Best getting-high-and-fucking-music ever to have lyrics in languages I don't speak about a diety.

6 CD's? That's nusratlicious...

would anyone like to recommned any of the live (NOT studio) recordings, and specifically gigs in pakistan: the poorer the sound quality the better.

BTW, my jokey-ness aside, I saw The Fat One in Ohio in 1994. He was EXCELLENT. People going nutty in the aisles. Great stuff.

Also recorded under the name Muskrat Fatty Alley Cat

Intoxicated Spirit is live, and amazing.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 17:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i saw him live shortly before his death, it was amazing!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

fatty alley cat - thats originally what i thought his name was.

Mustt Mustt is a good album to start with.

Grell (Grell), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

mustt mustt might be the biggest song in the world.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

So's Muskrat Love.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll 2nd Intoxicated Spirit. Are any of the other Ali Khan's near Nusrat's level?

stephen morris, Tuesday, 30 March 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven years pass...

I like the singing of his nephew, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

curmudgeon, Thursday, 14 May 2015 16:20 (ten years ago)

three weeks pass...

Just saw Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan last night in Washington DC before several thousands(99% South Asian if you're wondering about the demographics). Wide vocal range on his mix of pop, qawwali, and Lollywood & Bollywood songs. Powerful too.

Wish an editor would fix the spelling in the title (even if its 11 years since someone started the thread).

one year passes...

fellow singer killed

The songs Sabri performed are part of a Sufi tradition dating back to the 13th century. Known as Qawwalis, steeped in mysticism and sometimes based on mystic poetry, they are a key part of the spiritual life of millions of Muslims across south Asia and enjoyed by wider audiences of many faiths.
