Hi, I'm Jeff

Hey everyone, I'm relatively new here. I've haunted the bulletin board for a little while now and have contributed once or twice, but now it's official.

Anyway, here follows my profile that I wrote up especially for this site:
"
I'm 21 (as of fall 2003), attend wesleyan university in connecticut, and am a borderline obsessive fan of "indie" music, though I try to play down my snobbish impulses when it comes to music.

I'm studying neuroscience, but my dream would be to be a music critic/columnist for an underground magazine or webzine while playing in a band on the side, and maybe becoming a producer with my own studio (a'la Fridmann) once I grow older and wiser.

I've played the piano(/keyboard) since I was six, though I've only recently picked it back up since a couple years hiatus, and am currently taking jazz lessons, as opposed to the classical of my youth. I'm also teaching myself guitar, as well as taking intermittent lessons, but have far to go.

I read pitchfork daily, (and frequent numerous other zines) subscribe to CMJ NMM and Magnet, and frequently pick up other music mags at nearby book superstores.

I am filled with guilt for the tens of thousands of songs I have illegally downloaded, and keep telling myself that once I have a steady income I'll start paying for music, and I mean it... honest.

I am a slightly anal retentive snob when it comes to listening to music in its original album format, and look down on those who only pay attention to singles.

I also have a life outside music, which includes friends, girls, Ultimate Frisbee, (it's a real sport) and academics, but that's for neither here nor now.

feel free to im me on AIM /aol for dorky music conversations: jeffgmh82
"

And by the way, I'm "jeffgmh" on Soulseek.
Feel free to send me a message letting me know you're from ILM and I'll be sure to add you to my 'user' list.

Jeff MH (Jeff MH), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Are you fictional, Jeff?

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, stop being Jess.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Jeff! Welcome to ILM whether you're real or not.

What if the music's original format was a single, though?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"I also have a life outside music, which includes friends, girls"

the more you insist, the less i believe you jeff.

welcome anyways, good to have you.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember that girl from Africa who suddenly appeared? I MISS HER!

I'm studying neuroscience, but my dream would be to be a music critic/columnist for an underground magazine or webzine while playing in a band on the side, and maybe becoming a producer with my own studio (a'la Fridmann) once I grow older and wiser.

Yes, honey, and I want to have Pharrell's babies.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

If you mean Anna Rose she turned up again very recently Nathalie, but only for a post or two.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Tom I want your time machine.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeff, since you're a newbie, I suggest you also check out Stylus Magazine (www.stylusmagazine.com). Dom, Sick, Kilian, and I all write for it, and you might just find it pretty cool. Oh, and I work for your school's congresswoman. Vote Dem.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeff, spend a few more weeks here and we'll put some guilt in ya proper.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

wow! thanks for all the replies; I didn't expect so much so soon.

Sick/Nick- nope, i'm not fictional. Honestly, if I was fictional I'd have made myself far more interesting. As it stands, I make for some pretty unspectacular fiction.

Tico Tico- "What if the music's original format was a single, though?" - You've got me there. Truth be told, I'm not an absolute slave to the LP format, as I also enjoy the occasional mixtape, B-sides and rarities on their own, a well made compilation, and, of course, singles. Still there is nothing for me that quite compares to a good 30 to 74 minute chunk of great, well sequenced music.

Kilian-"the more you insist, the less i believe you jeff."-
Fair enough, perhaps I try a little too hard, but anyways, thanks for the welcoming.

miss jesus- good luck with the pharell thing, let me know how that goes. Anyway, I always figure there ain't nothing wrong with the occasional pipe dream.

Idol- no kidding, you write for stylus magazine? It has actually been in my favorites menu since I discoved it this past fall. I'm always a fan of a good zine, and you guys put out a pretty classy product.
"Vote Dem"
Don't worry, Republicans frighten me (no offense to anyone who swings that way)

David Allen-"Jeff, spend a few more weeks here and we'll put some guilt in ya proper."
Phew, and for a little while I was worried I might have to become a Catholic to get my fix.

Anyway, thanks for the interesting welcome all, and I'll try not to pull an African girl or any fiction on all of you, although I can't promise I'll be the most regular poster.

Jeff MH (Jeff MH), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you been to Integrity 'N Music on Rt 3 in Wethersfield? Great store for jazz vinyl. I miss it so.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

"Ultimate Frisbee (it's a real sport)"

As a University of California at Santa Cruz graduate I can say with complete and total certainty that this is bullshit.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

it's not a real sport until I've been hit in the head with its official projectile

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

hi jeff
they all may seem friendly now, but don't take it to hard when somebody thumps you on the rhetorical head for saying something only marginally dumb

good luck and have at it!

hector (hector), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Ultimate Frisbee has nothing on Frisbee Golf.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Frisbee golf has nothing on bloody knuckles.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I meant to ask... How's your burnin'???!??!?!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Very nice (although I bought an internal CD burner for my laptop. . . um yeah. . . so I ended up having to return it for an external one, but that one is working perfectly haha.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

jim wentworth (wench), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't worry, Republicans frighten me (no offense to anyone who swings that way)
Rule #1. Anything that frightens you must die.

Speedy (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, Hi!

Speedy (Speedy Gonzalas), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Jeff. I may be even newer than you, but I don't have so much interesting stuff to say.

See, that's my introduction.

Buffalo Stan (Buffalo Stan), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but your name is Buffalo, and his name is Jeff.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 08:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi! Jeff!

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn. I was hoping this was gonna be my Bright Eyes lovin' roommate Jeff, who is supercool but could definitely use some ILM-style indie guilt. (It did wonders for me--if I ran into Lou Barlow on the street today I think I would gleefully whip his ass, which is a thing the world needs more of.)

adam (adam), Friday, 2 April 2004 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I like your manners, Jeff.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, but your name is Buffalo, and his name is Jeff.

jesus nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Too right, jesus nathalie.
