Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I only have one comp CD + a tape I made off a college radio programme when I was 14 but I really like them. I used to listen to that tape raptly in high school.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 1 April 2004 04:53 (twenty-two years ago)

When all's said and done, I think Howlin' Wolf is the greatest rocker ever! At 50 he had more energy than Iggy Pop did at 25...

Just give me the first 10 off of Howlin' Wolf.
-- o. nate (syne_wav...), March 31st, 2004.

got the tracklisting for this?

I was listening to a sun records comp last night and it had a howling wolf track (I haven't got it with me right now so i can't tell you the title) but the timing on that is quite something- he comes in late, and just when you're thinking that's wrong he makes it right.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 4 June 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

is this the only howlin wolf thread?

anyway the other night i watched this, which is really good. great interviews with hubert sumlin and others. performance clips of wolf are terrific, and there's a good (if kind of sad) scene backstage where he's giving son house shit for being an old drunk.

tipsy mothra, Monday, 28 January 2008 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

That's a great flick. I don't think they're even backstage when he gives Son House a hard time! Also, this has the great "Shindig!" clip I'd never seen, with all the Stones looking awed by someone else for once in their lives. He's got great moves.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 28 January 2008 06:37 (eighteen years ago)

yeah for a big guy he sure could shake his ass. and all of his leers and growls are hilarious.

tipsy mothra, Monday, 28 January 2008 07:38 (eighteen years ago)

What is this upthread about a 'psychedelic' Howlin Wolf record????

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Monday, 28 January 2008 07:57 (eighteen years ago)

oops. well anyway it's this album, which i haven't heard.

tipsy mothra, Monday, 28 January 2008 08:32 (eighteen years ago)

And then there was that bizarre Message To The Young LP where Chess tried to make him a soul singer.

Little Milton, he wasn't.

Rev. Hoodoo, Monday, 28 January 2008 08:37 (eighteen years ago)

Whoa! So, who had that idea first, Muddy Waters or Wolf??

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Monday, 28 January 2008 08:40 (eighteen years ago)

Whoa! So, who had that idea (of doing a psych album) first, Muddy Waters or Wolf??

Neither one - both were producer Marshall Chess' ideas - but Muddy's Electric Mud came first, and then Wolf's LP followed close behind. (And Muddy had a second psychedelic album, After The Rain.)

Rev. Hoodoo, Monday, 28 January 2008 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

No love for "No Place To Go"?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 28 January 2008 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

The version of "Evil" on the Cactus live thing Rhino Handmade put out last year has to be heard to believed.

Bill Magill, Monday, 28 January 2008 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

No love for "No Place To Go"?

As big as his catalogue is, you think we'd get to EVERYTHING?

Although I gotta big-up a track I haven't seen yet - "I'll Be Around," or as the Wolf sings it, "I'll Be Arouuuuuuuund"...

Rev. Hoodoo, Monday, 28 January 2008 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

are there any wolf records with that tight lineup he plays with on the newport dvd? he's got sam jones on sax, but he's playing it uhh staccato? i guess, all short notes. i know he played with those guys a lot, but it seems like a different sound live. i haven't seen the film in forever (bukka white's awesome in it too, and son house is pretty miserable) but it comes back to me a lot. sax-centric wolf recommendations appreciated.

Great grandchildren due for big royalties from The Wolf of Wall Street. (Will have to share them with the Lemonheads and Plastic Bertrand.)

Do you know who his favorite singer was coming up?

Lem E. Killdozer (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 14 April 2014 19:57 (twelve years ago)

Charlie Patton, I believe

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Monday, 14 April 2014 20:40 (twelve years ago)

That's what I would have said, but recently read something different.

Lem E. Killdozer (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 14 April 2014 20:54 (twelve years ago)

Actually you are right. What I read was about a somewhat surprising influence on his style.

Lem E. Killdozer (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 15 April 2014 01:30 (twelve years ago)

Read that he started out trying to imitate Jimmie Rodgers but "I couldn't do no yodelin' so I turned to howlin'. And it's done me just fine."
