Superpitcher - Here Comes Love

Very much excited to hear this album. I'm on a Mac and Soulseekless, so I have to wait to actually pay for the damn thing. Who's heard it, and is it as great as it is in my head?

stephen morris, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 01:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i have it on order. But there are a few threads where people talk about it quite extensively just put Superpitcher in the box in the top right corner and drop the menu down to read ilm then hit go.

hector (hector), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i could not find those threads. (or that box in the top right corner.) maybe you could link them here.

fever: why oh why & what was he thinking

and, there's just too much in the way of lyrics throughout. just shutup, dude.

j. pantsman (jpantsman), Saturday, 3 April 2004 01:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I dig both the songs everyone shits on, including fever.

My criticism is more the sameness of the album.

djdee2005, Saturday, 3 April 2004 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I quite enjoy "Fever" as well actually but, still, 99% of everything else he's done is better. I'd prefer to have the album entirely samey (as in everything sounding like "People" and "Happiness") than have the stabs at diversity which "Love Me Forever" and "Fever" go for but don't really achieve. The vocals really control the feel of the album much more than the grooves do, which means that the leftfield tangents in the middle of the album aren't as effective as they might otherwise be. (on a related note, "Lovers Rock" would be quite melancholy as an instrumental but the vocals totally take it in the other direction)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 3 April 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

two weeks pass...
Must say I'm really enjoying this, I guess it gets leftfield in parts but when it does it feels more foreign and interesting rather than noodly. I find it very difficult (and annoying) to have to not listen to this album from start to finish.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I love it, it's like dance music for bleary eyed wallflowers. It's a shame tracks 5 and 6 suck so bad (c'mon the cover of "Fever" is pointless) though.

Michael B, Tuesday, 20 April 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i need to listen to this more cos i don't get the love for it. on a few listens it sounded to me like the same ideas as sascha funke's bravo, but not as good.

g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed. dope shit

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't find this anywhere as yet, is it even out in the UK yet?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, and has been for over a week, Matt DC. Try www.boomkat.com if you are struggling.

___ (___), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got it in the mail and am going home to dig on it right now!

Wish me luck.

hector (hector), Tuesday, 20 April 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i've seen it in vinyl in shops but not on CD and yeah i think its really good, it just suffers from the wight of expectation. Fever is crap, yeah.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not so much the weight of expectation, jed. It's a completely different style. It is an album in thr truest, traditional sense - as Ronan says, played in full.

To date Superpitcher has delivered 5-6 minute tracks of incredible power. The album to me should almost be under a very obvious psuedonym (like Iain M Banks to Iain Banks). That would save people expecting the Speicher style stuff that it clearly isn't.

___ (___), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't see how releasing it under the name "S. P. Pitcher Esquire" would help! i like it a lot and think fever is a great moment. it's a wee bit inconsistent and i'd have liked 10 tracks like more heroin on a double album, i deally, but if you can't abandon your expectations and appreciate this for the album this is, then well, you prob won't like it.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 08:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I think Fever is good too.

I guess I didn't know what to expect. Or maybe I've heard the wrong (or right) Speicher stuff.

Loving the new Justus Kohncke aswell I must say. Was his album any good?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

also, having said that i'd like an album of 10 "more heroins", i did an entire superpitcher mix (was for an ex girlfriend who i still make a lot of comps for a couple of months ago after she heard more tomorrow and wanted to hear more of his stuff). to be perfectly honest, i was bored stupid after a while. i like superpitcher best in juxtaposition to other stuff and the deviation from what you "expect" may well be because the meandering zone-out jobs don't work so well one after the other for over an hour.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 11:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The Justus Kohncke album was alright, if a bit all over the place. I prefer the thing he did with Dorau above most, but the twelve out at the moment is better than the album.

___ (___), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is a great insight...i guess it's how I feel.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

well bored stupid is a bit of an exaggeration, really, but i did want to listen to something else, that's for sure.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"sad boys" is my pick on this album. i like the consistency of it as well and i completely agree that an album made up completely of dancefloor stuff a la "more tomorrow" would be boring. i don't get the "fever" hate either...

tricky disco, Wednesday, 21 April 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't get the "fever" hate either...

Probably don't like it because it has been covered to death already. It's in that same My Funny Valentine/Yesterday territory, can't really add anything meaningful to it I guess. Now, if he had covered something like 'Both Ends Burning'. :)

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt DC - Rough Trade Shop has it in stock on CD (and vinyl)

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Mark P writes for Pitchfork now?

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

(Actually, I just checked and it looks like he has a handful of other reviews, too.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not quite what I was expecting when I posted this thread, but I do enjoy it quite a bit. It's a little too all over the place, but that doesn't hurt it too much.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably don't like it because it has been covered to death already.

yes i think thats exactly why, i must have heard more than 10 covers of this song in recent years.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 27 April 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone must love Traume.

Its like post WWI berlin set in today.
I am loathe to use the turm steampunk, but it does kind of make me think of the sci fi books that deal with that alternate "what if we used steam engines to power computers" thing.

hector (hector), Thursday, 6 May 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Saw this the other day, still trying to decide if I should get it. The 20-30 sec bits I bothered listening to sounded gorgeous, but there's an annoying air of "whatever" about peoples' reactions to it, it seems.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 27 May 2004 06:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ding ding ding

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Thursday, 27 May 2004 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, gotta buy something

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 27 May 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

people expected the wrong thing, that's all. i'd recommend it.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 27 May 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave's right - its good.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 27 May 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it - dunno how housey it really is and it falls down a tad in the middle but worth it for the last three tracks alone.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 27 May 2004 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It's good, all the way through if you ask me.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Done, frankly. If I think of anything witty and amazing to say about it I'll report back

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 27 May 2004 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

It is good, but it is also another record that doesn't really beg you to pick it up and play. You're more likely to find it, and wonder why you haven't listened to it recently.

___ (___), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

it's good to put on when a lady is with you

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

___ I love records like that! They usually end up being my favourites, for some fucked reason. Cutty uh that's a good point tho I'm meaning to buy the vinyl so I might have to tape it or something

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 27 May 2004 12:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Ditto on the lady bit. My wife immediately dropped L.O.V.E. all over Spticher's tracks (minus "Fever" tho).

nader (nader), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok I really am getting/taping this, I have a good 80s etc loving target in mind

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

it's good to put on when a lady is with you

Aaaaaarrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhh!!!! I find this concept absolutely loathsome! There should be no concessions to the music chosen (though Zeigenbock Kopf is yet to have led to success on any occassion)

___ (___), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

what?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Just the "it is a good album with the ladies". The whole idea of digging through records to get something you consider obscure, yet gentle, new and exciting in a view to get laid.

Waste of time and thought, the lot of it.

(says a single tripleunderscore)

___ (___), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm using the record trying to get laid, I'M PUTTING IT ON WHEN I'M HAVING SEX. and it's nice. there's a big difference.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

oops. "i'm NOT using the record to get laid"

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

and i think your ridiculous opinion might deserve its own thread

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It is not a ridiculous opinion! It is a firmly held avoidance of probably the biggest proof of being sad and musically obsessed. The "album to keep the lady happy" is SO bad! My brother (this is bad) recommended a list of albums that he had found "good with the ladies".

I just want to opt out on that shit. I am quite happy obsessing about music, but I don't exactly pick out pull/shag music. In fact, I just don't at all.

___ (___), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, I just find it something in the microhouse vein more liked by the ladies than the gents. Who said anything about getting laid - oh, unless we assume one meant "with" in the Biblical sense.

Damn you, Cutty and your Bible-thumping.

Did I say thumping? Will that be taken out of context? Will someone jump to conclusions...?

Ich wundere mich.

nader (nader), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe i've said this elsewhere, but count me in on the "i like it as a full album" tip. it's a very solid synthpop record.

tricky disco, Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

also, there is very little that is microhouse about this record

tricky disco, Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

tripleunderscore: the album is called HERE COMES LOVE.

are you missing something?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Cutty - I do not feel I am missing anything, no.

___ (___), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

well, i put this record on in the company of a nice lady. then i say..

"LOVE, here i COME!"

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 27 May 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

hey ANDREW THOMAS, have you got the ANDREW THOMAS album yet? I'm trying to figure out how to interview him. was the copy of Superpitcher you saw in Play? you should grab their copy of Justus Köhncke's "2 After 909"/"Weil Du Mich Verstehst" 12". & the first Junior Boys ep, if they've still got it.

(i also have a cdr of the Mayer Fabric mix to give to you; & I should lend you the Kaito album)

etc, Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm on a Mac and Soulseekless, so I have to wait to actually pay for the damn thing.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Thursday, 27 May 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

No I haven't and w/Beautiful Music gone I prob never will. Yeah I'm pretty tempted by some of those 12"s but they're $25, I dunno. The "Korn/Roxy" one'd prob be pretty good. Oh and yeah, Play had it. Do you know where RG file Kompakt stuff in the Cds? Cos the vinyl house section's just too huge to bother w/and their categories are so useless ("Around the House" was in downtempo or something) I have no idea where to look.

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 28 May 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
It's funny to me that this thread got this far without anyone mentioning 'The Long Way'. It's my favourite Superpitcher track, my favourite track by anyone this year, in fact. I listen to it and it seems to cut to the heart of everything.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 26 July 2004 12:04 (twenty-one years ago)

hearing "the long way" made me buy the album. it was the first superpitcher track i ever heard (i'm always on top of things, me), and indeed one of the finest on the album. for now, album of the year.

willem (willem), Monday, 26 July 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

if only that horrible "fever" cover could be struck from the record. ew.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 26 July 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

there's always the "program" or "skip" button...

willem (willem), Monday, 26 July 2004 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

When did they put those on turntables, willem?

___ (___), Monday, 26 July 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I believe the skip feature on a turntable involves a post-it note or some other tomfoolery.

bohford, Monday, 26 July 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

@___: heh. touché.
(maybe it's a first track on side x? still skipable, then ;-)

willem (willem), Monday, 26 July 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i could skip it. i could de-program it. but i still know it exists.

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 26 July 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, "happiness" is now my fave from this one. the whole tune could just be that banging, almost distorted piano and then the thick kick comes in. mmm. i'm anxious to see what mayer and whoever else does with it when they (according to some other thread here) release the remixes.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Monday, 26 July 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

so i'm listening to Immer (finally) and i have a question: which came first? "happiness" or his remix of carsten jost's "you don't need a weatherman?" i don't know the original, so i don't know what elements are there. but the piano, flow, tone, etc., is v similair.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Saturday, 31 July 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I absolutely love this album. Even "Fever". Certainly in my top 5 of the year.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 31 July 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Christ, really? I'm a bit disappointed by the pacing, amongst other things. Most tracks follow the same plug-plug tempo, not quite schaffel, but certainly monotonous by album's close. Initally I was impressed that he'd change his modus operandi so thoroughly, then dismayed by the results ... I will freely admit that HCL has grown on me, but only in an "I'll-prise-this-track-away-for-a-mix" sense. With an LP, you need some variety, like the beautiful progressions on "Are You Conscious."

Dare, Sunday, 1 August 2004 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I still really like this album a lot. Even 'Fever'. I, however, don't need (or even really like) a lot of variety out of albums. I love the way it picks one vibe and tempo and sticks to it the whole way through. Perfect for certain moods.

tylero (tylero), Sunday, 1 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

i agree - down with variety!

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 1 August 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

are you being sarcastic jed?

he has a point really though! if I bother to buy an artist album some purity is ok. I get enough variety in mixes.

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 1 August 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

not at all - i think the even tempo makes it a good listen. None of the albums i love change pace all that much. if i want a record to do lots of different things then i'll make my own compilation.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 1 August 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i do like this album a lot. I think though that Superpitcher is best consumed on a track by track basis - nothing sounds better than a mix suddenly descending into a s'pitcher drone. With the album, the peculiarity of his sound is obscured by the fact that it's all him, and with middling tracks like "Lovers Rock" it's easy to become a bit blase. "People", "The Long Way" and "Happiness" are among my favourite things of the year though.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 2 August 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Attention all fellow dorks there is a Superpitcher video for Happiness:

http://www.kompakt-net.de/happiness/

Goth or what?

and I think the girl is cute

hector (hector), Friday, 6 August 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

As I told Todd Burns, I was waiting for Lorenna McKennitt to pop out in that video with her autoharp and start conditioning her hair...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Friday, 6 August 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

THE WOLVES.

g--ff (gcannon), Friday, 6 August 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

If I may poke my head in for a sec...I got tired of seeing all the raves here about Kompakt stuff so I decided to try a song from Superpitcher and a song from Thomas Fehlmann and was pleasantly surprised by both. I've heard two from Superpitcher now and I think they're pretty cool. I like the fact that they do this sortof dark vocal thing over top of the electronics. I will listen to some more, perhaps report back.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 6 August 2004 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

she doesn't look like bonnie rait

hector (hector), Friday, 6 August 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

so the "happiness" remixes 12 is apparently out. listened to the samples on boomkat. the mayer one sounds nice, thick and interesting. the lawrence one merely sounds pleasant. granted i haven't heard the full tracks, just the minute-long snippets.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Remix other Superpitcher tracks please!

Alba (Alba), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

(I was thinking of 'Tomorrow' - ignore me)

Alba (Alba), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the Mayer one samples PAUL RUTHERFORD, I nearly went psycho trying to remember what that "are you happy, happy people" sample was from.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 16 August 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

you're aware of the super-lush kaito "tomorrow" re-do, right alba?

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 16 August 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes - and the eerier SCSI-9 one, which I prefer. Which is why I thought "Not more 'Tomorrow' remixes!" in my confusion.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 16 August 2004 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, okay, i was confused about yr confusion.

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 16 August 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"I nearly went psycho trying to remember what that 'are you happy, happy people' sample was from"

Ah, the Paul R track from Smagghe's Death Disco? Can't wait to hear it.
