Spring Drums - Classic or Dud?

My friend was thinking about picking one of these up for $30. What do they sound like? Do any bands use them.

Spring drums rule. It makes a metallic ambient roar when you shake it. You can use the drum, but the skin is mostly there to provide a cavity to amplify the sound of the vibrating spring.
