dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I love AEoC, but now that Lester and Malachi are both dead, it seems kinda pointless.

hstencil, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

sightings (and the rah brahs) on friday at mighty robot in williamsburg!

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I will be in Providence on Friday :(

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:36 (twenty-two years ago)

you are making a big mistake!

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

>I love AEoC, but now that Lester and Malachi are both dead, it seems kinda pointless.

Their most recent album (with Jarman, Mitchell, Favors and Moye) was great. And they've recruited a trumpeter and bassist from Roscoe Mitchell's other band, the Note Factory. I think it's gonna be very good, if not what it would have been in, say, 1993 (the last time the full quintet performed together).

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Metal Urbain this weekend, btw.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Sacchromanic Targets was supposed to play Friday too, but I didn't see 'em on the email. : (

hstencil, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i was wondering about that. when i last saw dh he told me they were on the bill.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

he didn't even tell me! I heard about it through Eric his bandmate. Didn't see him yet today so haven't been able to ask about the email.

hstencil, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

eeek... yeah, I don't know how Providence is doing. There are some shows at a shitty club and some shows a somewhat less shitty bar.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Why not drop by Printed Matter on Saturday between 5-7 ?

Russ, Thursday, 1 April 2004 00:37 (twenty-two years ago)

i wanted to go see the Rapture right after work tonight seeing as how I'm supposed to be on their "permanent guest list" but their management told me the nephew of the bus-boy at the cafeteria for universal wanted to go, so there was no room for me.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 1 April 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

stop crying, Dan Selzer!

hstencil, Thursday, 1 April 2004 05:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I stopped crying because I couldn't hear myself. You know why? Because I ended up going to see Midnight O'Connor(unlike some people...) and after waiting an hour, had to leave in the middle of the first song(note, that's still 10 or 20 minutes into the set) as it was perhaps one of the loudest shows I've ever heard, and I've been to loud shows (Merzbow and Masonna, Cle 96 comest to mind) or maybe I'm just an old crybaby, but damn it was loud. And they, um, have 2 drummers now.

It saddened me most that people seem to not know how to get bands and crowds together. All I could think is that there must be many many dozens of people in the tri-state area, if not HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS who totally would've loved to hear a band of fantastic musicians perform the very most extreme wayne rogers/hawkwind/amon duul/heavy psyche music while they all wore black robes. It can't be that the only market for them is people who work at Kims. This goes for them and many many other bands and DJs in NYC.

Maybe people, promoters/bookers, bands etc are lazy, or maybe they think the internet is the solution. Oh I'll just post on nyhappenings and friendster and 1,000 people will show up.

This saturday Metal Urbain are playing in Red Hook with a punkish band and a punk/thrash/metal band. When they were here in november they played with the Rah Bras, Oneida, Ghost Exits, Mazing Vids, Sightings and the aforementioned Midnight O'Connor and each night was a good crowd filled with the sort of post-indie-rock hipsters who Metal Urbain surely appeal to. But where were the mohawks?

It's not enough to drop a flyer off at Generation Records, no matter how descriptive. Should I have made a poster that said "Metal Urbain are like the Sex Pistols in french, but with a drum machine"?
