Their most recent album (with Jarman, Mitchell, Favors and Moye) was great. And they've recruited a trumpeter and bassist from Roscoe Mitchell's other band, the Note Factory. I think it's gonna be very good, if not what it would have been in, say, 1993 (the last time the full quintet performed together).

It saddened me most that people seem to not know how to get bands and crowds together. All I could think is that there must be many many dozens of people in the tri-state area, if not HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS who totally would've loved to hear a band of fantastic musicians perform the very most extreme wayne rogers/hawkwind/amon duul/heavy psyche music while they all wore black robes. It can't be that the only market for them is people who work at Kims. This goes for them and many many other bands and DJs in NYC.
Maybe people, promoters/bookers, bands etc are lazy, or maybe they think the internet is the solution. Oh I'll just post on nyhappenings and friendster and 1,000 people will show up.
This saturday Metal Urbain are playing in Red Hook with a punkish band and a punk/thrash/metal band. When they were here in november they played with the Rah Bras, Oneida, Ghost Exits, Mazing Vids, Sightings and the aforementioned Midnight O'Connor and each night was a good crowd filled with the sort of post-indie-rock hipsters who Metal Urbain surely appeal to. But where were the mohawks?
It's not enough to drop a flyer off at Generation Records, no matter how descriptive. Should I have made a poster that said "Metal Urbain are like the Sex Pistols in french, but with a drum machine"?
