i feel so out of the loop (no pun intended).

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Who cares? Seriously...

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i hear they are sister and brother... and they beat up the lead singer of pram.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:00 (twenty-two years ago)

any guy who likes incredibly hot, talented socialists should care.

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The one time I saw Slab, Tim was wearing plaid pants and a Reeses peanut butter cup t shirt. She should have dumped him right then.
It's worse than Kelly MacDonald going out with Dougie from Travis. Dougie!

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I care! They have a kid, too, right?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I like stereolab, but as people they're not prime soap opera material.

And she wouldn't date any of you anyway, y'all.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"Sorry your bandmate and best friend died and you and tim are no longer together can i send you letters because you are so beautiful and your voice makes stereolab, sincerely life long lab fan ps monade makes me wet"

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

My Stereolab crush is on Morgane Lhote, even though I suspect that she can't actually play the Farfisa that well.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

well, ex-Stereolab Morgane Lhote, anyway

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

(who was apparently kicked out of the band because she cared more about her cats than the band, which is as official as the word gets)

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Heh. Well, yes, I knew she was out of the band, but I figured it was because she was superfluous.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

i care about my cats more than the band too

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Then you're obviously not qualified for a position beyond Farfisa Necromancer, young ESOJ.

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

They split up years ago...but 'socialists'? They might talk a good talk, but they put band members on low, low wages and cream off most for themselves. Socialism. A fine idea, but not much fun in practise. Stereloab. A fine idea, but not much fun in practise.
Last I saw of Morgane, she was playing in the Projects.

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Thursday, 1 April 2004 08:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Years ago? Didn't they have the baby in 2000 or 2001? Eh, I guess that is years ago.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 1 April 2004 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

she cared more about her cats than the band

what a great reason! i think i like morgane even more now

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 1 April 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 1 April 2004 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost
I remember seeing them at a gig in 1998 with baby in tow...don't know if they had another one...

Canada Briggs (Canada Briggs), Thursday, 1 April 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Oi! db, I've warned you before about hacking into my Outbox

Jeff W (zebedee), Thursday, 1 April 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

This is all news to me. I hadn't heard about the separation or that Lhote is out of the band. I'm out of the loop.

How are their recent live shows?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost that outfit belongs in the Things Women Shouldn't Find Sexy but Do canon. I'm getting hot just thinking of it!
which one's Dougie? Is he the racecar driver?

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I worked at a venue when Stereolab played here and got to meet them 'n' stuff.

That Laetitia is NOT good looking close up. I had the urge to go and say that to Tim Gane (not realising at the time that they were in fact together) and that also that "I wouldn't touch her with yours" while nudging him.

Sasha (sgh), Friday, 2 April 2004 00:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, that's mean.

Back in 1993 I had the unexpected duty, courtesy of my friend Jen who booked their show with Unrest, to lead Laetitia and (unless my memory is completely shot) Mary as well across from the UCI campus to get dinner at a generic food place. I had interviewed Laetitia over the phone a few weeks before, really great interview and I think I have the story somewhere, and in person she was equally spiff. Mary was quieter but just as cool.

I didn't think the show Sunday would be as good as it was without Mary. But it was -- even knowing that Those Harmonies and vocal tradeoffs will just never happen again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 April 2004 00:36 (twenty-two years ago)

RE: "'socialists'? They might talk a good talk...."

They also hire out their music for TV car adverts. Along with the other elements they've ripped off from '70's bands, somebody in the Stereolab HQ must have figured that facetiously plundering the sentiment of Henry Cow/Art Bears lyrics in addition to their pilfered Neu/United States of America/Can/Astrud Gilberto tunes was par for the hipster-retread course. At least they don't wear Che Guevara shirts.

Mary was nice; I met her once and she seemed much more down to earth than the others.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Friday, 2 April 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Laetitia's completely uncomprehending slam of the movie "Goodbye Lenin" in the Wire in January also makes claims of being Socialist dubious.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 2 April 2004 07:51 (twenty-two years ago)

they were okay the other night, they weren't nearly as fun as they used to be. there is a big hole where mary was, sonically and energy-wise. for the first few songs everyone was kind of quiet and unenthsiastic and I thought "wow, this is going to suck." But somehow it picked up. All of her b-vox were done with a horn, which was cool (but kind of called attention to the missing voice at the same time, which maybe wasn't so cool). The saddest song was Captain Easychord, because there was no-one to sing the "happy happy happy" part, so they just left it out. But they did some weird stomping techno dance thing toward the end which was cool and different (for them). It was fine, just not the stereolab I'd come to love.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 2 April 2004 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, it was good. It wasn't like I imagine the first new order gig to be or something in terms of a traumatized and fucked up band missing an integral member. it was just kind of melancholy.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 2 April 2004 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha, my sister used to go on about how that Laetitia was really a man - which assumes on her part that men don't find mannish women attractive on occasion.

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 2 April 2004 08:32 (twenty-two years ago)

if there was an IMDB for pop stars you could keep track of this better.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Friday, 2 April 2004 08:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Are there any threads on ILM involving female musicians that don't get really creepy and draw a few people hung up on their looks? Just curious.
