She wants to tell that girl to shut up. She's gonna tell that girl she's gonna beat her up.

donut bitch (donut), Thursday, 1 April 2004 10:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That was Holly Beth Vincent wasn't it?

Wendy James was the one who didn't want your money honey, all she wanted was your love, surely?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 1 April 2004 10:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Wendy did a cover version.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 1 April 2004 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Wendy should make a record with Vitalic.

Jacob (Jacob), Thursday, 1 April 2004 10:36 (twenty-one years ago)

She may not need to earn a living, if her boyfriend's happy to let his own royalties and forced inactivity look after her. At the turn of the century, she was writing songs occasionally and demoing them with said boyfriend's cousin, but only for her own satisfaction. Maybe when Bush split up, T-Vamp can do that year's Here And Now tour...

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 2 April 2004 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

She's still with him??!!

Karen, Friday, 2 April 2004 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Wendy was a woman out of time.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 2 April 2004 23:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the video for 'Baby I Don't Care' again recently and was thinking what N. said. It's amazing to think how unusual it was for a woman singer to wear 'sexy' clothes back then (compare her with say Bananarama), and how much grief she got from the NME etc because of this. Nobody in the 80's would have predicted the triumph of acts like Britney/Kylie/Xtina, even though it's taken for granted now.

Joe Kay (feethurt), Saturday, 3 April 2004 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think, post-Madonna, Wendy was doing anything unusual Joe. It's just that Trans Vamp were supposed to be in some way "credible" and the NME at the height of 80s Left Puritanism thought that Wimmin In Rock should all wear burqahs or something.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 3 April 2004 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Forgot about Madonna. Another theory up in smoke

Joe Kay (feethurt), Saturday, 3 April 2004 10:31 (twenty-one years ago)

But maybe you could theorise that Wendy was the proto-Courtney Love. Except with the odd good song.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 3 April 2004 10:34 (twenty-one years ago)

A pioneer and a legend.

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 3 April 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh sorry I thought this was about Wendy Craig

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 3 April 2004 11:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Madonna wasn't British, and more importantly, she didn't exist (loosely) in the indie scene.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 3 April 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm struggling to articulate why she was disapproved of by the right-on British indie scene of the 80s in a way that Madonna wasn't.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 3 April 2004 11:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Mainly because of what I said above, N. In the NME's eyes Madonna could do what she wanted, she was only Pop after all. But compare TV to The Shop Assistants or any of the other deliberately asexual C86 bands and you can see how far out of step they were.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 3 April 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe it's also because Madonna's projected sexuality always seemed a wry marketing act, whereas Wendy James seemed a real, pre-Loaded generation ladette.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 3 April 2004 11:10 (twenty-one years ago)

That said, does anybody remember them doing a song on "Saturday Superstore" or whatever the BBC's kids show was at the time which ended with a half-naked Wendy virtually humping the floor in front of a gaggle of bemused and slightly embarrassed 9 year-olds? Oh, how we laffed.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 3 April 2004 11:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I also remember Carol Decker of T'Pau doing an NME interview in which she was very down-to-earth, British working class about sex and I think that was quite shocking too.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 3 April 2004 11:13 (twenty-one years ago)

where does Vicky Fuzzbox fit into this? she was somewhere between Wendy and Madonna, falling between two stools as it were

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 3 April 2004 11:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd forgotten about her. That wonderbra NME cover is now looming in my head.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 3 April 2004 11:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuzzbox were a bit grebo, even after the makeover.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 3 April 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

N: I was just about to say: - O, I remember that Decker interview too!

But then I remembered that the one I read - it would be September 1988 - was in... Sounds.

!!

the soundfox, Saturday, 3 April 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Perhaps it was in Sounds. I can't be sure. I bought it occasionally. Morrissey's contact lenses were giving him discomfort in April 1988.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 3 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

She was 15 years ahead of her time, or 10 too late.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 5 April 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)
