...is my new favorite song. How have I not shown the love for this until now? Also, it's great for cooling down after Punk Rock Aerobics :)

Impossible not to love

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 1 April 2004 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i was with you until the last line, when i spontaneously vomited.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

you're just jealous 'cause I can wear fishnets and do the Legs McNeil

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i can wear fishnets too

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the only thing stopping me is common decency

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

thank Go for that, then

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

there's another thread about UTR, where everyone agreed that it is the greatest song ever and we should destroy all other music recordings.
"3 Piece Suit and Thing" is great too (includes snatches of the original vocal. speaking of which, you should check out Alton Ellis's "I'm Still in Love With You")

oops (Oops), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

it really is the perfect song though. i remember something tom wrote about hearing it for the first time that went roughly "it briefly transported you to a world where common things - girl groups, verse-chorus-verse - seemed new", which i think is very spot on.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

have you heard Althea and Donna's album, jess?

oops (Oops), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

that's true, Fishnet Boy (xpost)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

no! i didnt even know there was one.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a pretty good album, better than I expected. I've only heard it a couple of times, though.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard it either, but supposedly they try to be 'cultural' instead of pop and wind up sounding very generic and trite.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

well you can never accuse them of getting by on their looks

oops (Oops), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, Front Line was a such a great label.

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

mullygrubber (gaz), Thursday, 1 April 2004 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 1 April 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

jed_ (jed), Friday, 2 April 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't there a recent Sean Paul song (or someone who sounds like him, I think) that has a blatant sample of UTR in it?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 2 April 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah probably "I'm Still in Love". I am a non-googling-when-I-should-be-googling fool.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 2 April 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah well it's the cover of the Alton Ellis track "I'm Still In Love With You" (which was the same rhythm as "Uptown Top Ranking.")

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 April 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh! Cool

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 2 April 2004 00:47 (twenty-one years ago)

same with that "international affair" song w/sean paul and tweet, from that mark ronson album

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 2 April 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe that's the one I was thinking of, I dunno, I just heard it on the radio and was like "uptown top ranking! @!#$%"

Dan I. (Dan I.), Friday, 2 April 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

This is timely as I just put "UTR" on a mix for a friend, who singled that one song out and asked me a whole bunch of questions about it. Now I can just point them to this thread.

But, yeah, the song is one of those amazing perfect moments that can conjure up where you were, what you were doing, etc., when you first heard it.

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 3 April 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"i'm still in love with you" is officially the source of 80% of good music over the past 30 years.

amateur!st (amateurist), Sunday, 23 May 2004 04:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Will one be drawn and quartered for preferring the Black Box Recorder cover to the original?

joseph cotten, Sunday, 23 May 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

joseph cotten speaks from beyond the grave!

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 23 May 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)
