life after death - c or d

it's a double album, but so far i have only listened to disc 1. first impression: three songs have stood out - the two famous singles (mo money and hypnotize) plus "what's beef?" (i like how confident it sounds despite the preoccupation with impending death). otherwise - perhaps i am a little underwhelmed - definitely not as immediately impressive as ready to die.

what delights await me on disc 2? will disc 1's charms reveal themselves? well?

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

disc one is back-to-back amazing, pretty much every track is amazing. disc two has the two best tracks overall, ten crack commandments and notorious thugs, but isn't as good.

William Wiggins, Thursday, 1 April 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i just heard it for the first time last week.

Classic overall. If I was to do the black and white "classic-dud" format track by track it would be like this:

Disc 1
Life After Death Intro - N/A
Somebody's Gotta Die - classic
Hypnotize - Classic
Kick in the Door - classic
#! *@ You Tonight - dud
Last Day - dud
I Love the Dough - classic
What's Beef? - classic
B.I.G. Interlude - classic
Mo Money Mo Problems - classic
Niggas Bleed - dud
I Got a Story to Tell - classic

Disc 2
Notorious Thugs - classic
Miss U - classic
Another - dud
Going Back to Cali - classic
Ten Crack Commandments - classic
Playa Hater - dud
Nasty Boy - classic
Sky's the Limit - classic
The World Is Filled... - classic
My Downfall - classic
Long Kiss Goodnight - classic
You're Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You) - classic

djdee2005, Friday, 2 April 2004 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Kick in the Door, I Love the Dough and I Got A Story to Tell are SERIOUS standouts! I'm surprised you didn't like them.

djdee2005, Friday, 2 April 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I like lots of the individual songs, but I don't like listening to it straight through. Too many shitty R&B hooks, and Biggie's rapping is so lazy. And so many bad guest appearances. I'm generally a hip-hop rockist when it comes to this and the other "sellout" albums. I don't like Vol. 2 Hard Knock Life or the post-Illmatic years much either.

Sym (shmuel), Friday, 2 April 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think biggie's rapping is lazy at all..even the songs I called "dud" generally have dece verses.

djdee2005, Friday, 2 April 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

aww but your duds imply you maybe think his singing is lazy.

scissors (Honda), Friday, 2 April 2004 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

it sounds like everything on ready to die refined and sometimes perfected and all the new things that you've never heard him do before. there's the twisty storytelling tracks that build down into perfect payoffs ("nigga turned around holdin his daughter..."/"through all the excitement, they range got towed-- they double-parked by a hydrant"), the big puff/big tracks, the gully tracks, the slow jamz, whatever. it's amazing just to hear him rap-- like, he's perfect and most of the time it's just sort of in the back of your mind, like, "oh, he's good," but there're so many moments on it where it's like just .......... "this is perfect" and he can do anything.

William Wiggins, Friday, 2 April 2004 05:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i just heard it so maybe i'm overexcited. but i agree with ethan that he has no dud verses in his recorded history, based on what i've heard.

William Wiggins, Friday, 2 April 2004 05:11 (twenty-one years ago)

anyway classic, impressive scope, old mobster aesthetic works wonderfully, and i like the guest appearances and the 112 hooks. i don't find him a lazy rapper either, maybe somewhat sedate in his flow but with grand menace. like an ominous simmer of a don to somebody like kool g rap's explosiveness. also i think my young friends and i were introduced to the concept of scatophilia by this album. classic.

scissors (Honda), Friday, 2 April 2004 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

three years pass...

He sounds like he's performing while sitting on a comfortable couch. He never sounds as excited as he was on GIMME THE LOOT. But of course he doesn't. He's in a different place. Fortunately, though, as William Wiggins mentioned, he didn't forget to inject fascinating details into his songs. It's a mainstream/gangster rap album that GZA might dig. Niggas Bleed!!! It's literature on wax.

ive never totally liked this album. various tracks that i think are good on it, but never much liked what biggie did with his flow on it.

actually, IS this a challop? or would it only be a challop if what hes saying was in some way received wisdom instead of an attempt to challenge?

deej, Thursday, 3 July 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

i thought either...

titchy's first post too vague to be a challop surely.

Tim F, Friday, 4 July 2008 11:00 (seventeen years ago)

noooo, anything that isnt in line with deej and his fluffers' patented smug contrarianism is clearly challopy.

the reasons i dont really like LAD that much, other than ones that i hope will annoy deej, are that the production overall is somewhat bloated, big's flow seems a bit choppier/quicker, and his actual vocals seem to be lighter, less imposing/intimidating than before. yeah, theres a lot of 'detail' and overall 'cinematic' (zzz) elements, but its more perry mason than the godfather.

J0rdan S., Friday, 4 July 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)

Seriously man: you hold some decidedly non-canonical opinions. Big fuckin deal, I don't give a fuck if you jam Edan all day at the expense of LAD, but don't act all affronted and surprised when you get clowned by rap purists for not "getting"/liking revered shit.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 4 July 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

its not just that he doesnt like it, its that his comments are so vague as to be meaningless. "his flow seems choppier" like wtf is he even basing that on? you and i can look at a building from different sides and describe it differently, and titchy would look at it and say its a cow

deej, Friday, 4 July 2008 19:30 (seventeen years ago)

i mean what it comes down to is

production: 'cinematic'/expansive vs. 'bloated'
flow: light on his feet, deft & complex vs. "lighter, less intimidating, choppier"

what side you on i guess

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 4 July 2008 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

Cause to me that same lightness is some Dizzy Gillespie shit, dude is remaining super-complex but feinting and darting like cray.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 4 July 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

"wtf is he even basing that on"

er, the album? fwiw, i dont dislike all of LAD - theres plenty of songs on it i do like (mmmp, fucking you tonight, beef, notorious thugs, kick in the door, nasty girl), just as a whole, i prefer ready to die a 100 times more. this is just my opinion obviously, when i post im not thinking 'ooooh im being so different', this is just what i genuinely think. lol@being vague. if i had said 'i dont like this album cos big wasnt dope, he lost it, he wasnt on it like he used to be' THAT would be vague. but i didnt. anyway, you carry on liking lollipop, and ill keep on not liking LAD so much.

BIG is my favorite individual emcee. Playing this again for the 7 millionth time right now. i fuckin' love this album. it's so cinematic, the storytelling feels immersive in headphones. plus the glitzy tracks actually work for him, for the most part. the pop jams are dope, just like they were on Ready to Die.

I feel like maybe RTD is my fav, but I listen to LAD more these days. He seems more nihilistic on RTD at times.

"Last Day" is what made me a fan of The L.O.X.
