all this talk about the grime kids making beats on playstations.

why?

what programs are they using? are they specially made for the playstation?

do they program the beats with joysticks? using their tv as a monitor?

sorry for the ignorance

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 2 April 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm assuming they use mtv music generator

http://www.gamespot.com/ps/puzzle/mtvmusicgenerator/screenindex.html

it is like a really low-budget version of fruity loops.

I think it's actually just a criticism of grime's poor, simplistic production aesthetic as posited by old skool garage cry-babies. Check out the start of Boo Kroo Them where one of them makes a beat on his Playstation but it's frowsy so they get Sticky instead!

"music" or "music 2000" were quite popular a few of years ago with bedroom musicians. they have samples of lots of drum kits, keyboard sounds, bass notes etc etc and these can be arranged on the screen with a rudimentary sequencer. i think there might have been some very basic sampling available as well. i remember these 16 year old kids coming into a friends studio with a playstation & a small portable tv. we were v. surprised with the sound quality & complexity of the stuff they had recorded.

zappi (joni), Friday, 2 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ice Rink" is built around an old hockey game sample.

JaXoN, if I bring you more goodies, do you think you could give me a Reason tutorial sometime?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

zappi i think "music 2000" is a repackaging of "mtv music generator" for the european market.

i've heard rumors of US trance labels putting out tracks built with mtv music generator, though i don't know how you'd confirm that. nobody's bragging about it, anyway. i'd believe it, though.

vahid (vahid), Friday, 2 April 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck Reason!!!!! Fruityloops is way more fun. BTW I'm still holding out to hear Strongo's screwface riddim!!!

scg, Friday, 2 April 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Can you get FL for Mac??

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 April 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 2 April 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a new one coming out soon - MTV Music Generator 3 - the "Music" series is the old developer - Jester continuing the series withouth the MTV license..

the new MTV 3 has a new developer....I've played it - really fun - although the whole series has the problem of taking "one step forward, one step back" in that they will fix things with the interface, then make some other facet worse..still it's a blast though...

The new one lets you sample off CD (though I didn't get chance to try)....also has some pretty big hits that you can remix - The Way You Move by OutKast, Get Busy by Sean Paul,Chuuch by Snoop, and a few others..

I did an OutKast remix - it was awesome - this game makes you feel as though you could be producer for real...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 2 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax, my email isn't working today. if you want, send it to my work email. j@son.d@rrow@eurorscg.com (obv get rid of the first two @)

adam, i'd totally give you a tutorial. it's fun. ever since i got a full time job though, i've been totally lazy. i went looking for the 4cds it requires to install when i packed my house to move, but i couldn't find them. i'm totally bummed. do you already have the installers? maybe i lent them to someone? shit.

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 2 April 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

caspar (caspar), Friday, 2 April 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

An interesting article by Malcolm McClaren.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 2 April 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

is fruity loops really a good app? just from the name alone, it sounds, well, um, frooty. it's got a decent sequencer and good sounds?

JaXoN (JasonD), Friday, 2 April 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

fruity loops is super fun. it's kind of like a more intuitive, less-featured, more loop-intensive version of reason. you can grasp the basics of how to bash out a rhythm in an hour or so. i love it.

rgeary (rgeary), Friday, 2 April 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 2 April 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The thought of gygax playing Parappa is endlessly amusing to me.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 April 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

a whole bunch of people making music with gameboys and similar toys
http://www.8bitpeoples.com/

i think on the whole there must be more people making this sort of music than there are people willing to listen to it

j. pantsman (jpantsman), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The actual sounds you get with Fruity Loops are woeful sub-80's cheap keyboard filth. However, the synths are OK and you can always add more VST synths and go sample fishing in your record collection.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:03 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread made me bid on a copy of that MTV Music Playstation game and then it told me there was a new version. Damn you all!

christhamrin (christhamrin), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i use(d) a cracked version of sound edit 16. "screwface riddim" is still sadly trapped on my other computer across the country!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:38 (twenty-one years ago)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

nano loop is a application/game oyu can get for gameboy. ive got it, its a bit fidddly to use though. if you invest enough time you can make something decent, havent dug it out for a while though.
its costs about 60 quid.,

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 2 April 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, was that the wierd thing made by some german guy? we had a copy of that around here somewhere...I remember finding it way confusing to use...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 2 April 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Alec Empire make a 'Nintendo Teenage Riot' album using only a Gameboy for source sounds? I should know, I had it, but I sold it because it was shit. I can't remember the name, but it was something like the above.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 3 April 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I think there's a Gameboy band called Super Madrigal Brothers who are pretty cool, can't remember their address.

Most of this stuff I've heard sounds much as you'd expect, but there's some very good music on the monotonik site. Blasterheads' "Killbots EP" is particularly bangin' (ahem).

Malcy Maclaren is way behind the money on this one.

"The actual sounds you get with Fruity Loops are woeful sub-80's cheap keyboard filth. However, the synths are OK and you can always add more VST synths and go sample fishing in your record collection."

plus you can tweak, chop up, and edit the hell out of them in any decent wave editor (once you export them).

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 07:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the Super Madrigal Bros a couple years ago as part of Momus' Travelling Festival of Pain. He dragged along a bunch of really awful bands that played for a very long time, making his brief set seem that much better.

I am very interested in this MTV thing for Xbox though--Lil Jon's days are surely numbered.
