Rebuild the Indie Rock Cannon

You know there are those fucking annoying 60's/70's/80's bands (Joy Division, Gang of Four, The Police, Husker Du, etc.) that people in lame Indie bands say they like? Well, make a list of touchstone bands for today's lame indie fux bands to listen as their cannonical influences.

Here's mine:

- Parliament / Funkadelic
- Queen
- King Crimson
- Neu!
- Can
- Kraftwerk
- Factrix
- Throbbing Gristle
- Terry Riley
- Beefheart
- Philip Glass (Einstein on the Beach)

Of course, the questions of which indie bands I am mean and what exactly does their rock cannon consist of is open!

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeff Mills.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Wham!

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Wham! for sure!!!!

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Weird Al

Actually, shit there's Ween.

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Prince
Van Halen
Bowie
Art Ensemble of Chicago

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

An indie-rock cannon would be for blowing them all away, no? Who is firing it?

no opinion, Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil' Won, haven't there already been a lot of indie bands influenced by the people you mention? Maybe not Queen, but even an obscure one like Factrix--Wolf Eyes are influenced by them.

Tim Ellison, Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

In response to Queen:

Have you heard of a band called The Darkness?

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Wolf Eyes is not who needs their taste adjusted!

http://www.wrur.org/music.php

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Saturday, 3 April 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not a very bad list. I like 12 of those bands and I hardly buy 12 indie records a year.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Saturday, 3 April 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

In other words:

costumes and/or bombast:
- Parliament / Funkadelic
- Queen
- King Crimson

repetition:
- Neu!
- Can
- Kraftwerk
- Factrix
- Terry Riley
- Philip Glass (Einstein on the Beach)

fucked-up noise:
- Beefheart
- Throbbing Gristle

Pretty much how the canon has always looked, although noticeably no real punk or '60's pop influences.

Nom De Plume (Nom De Plume), Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The Sonics solve that dilemma in one fell swoop.

minolta (minolta), Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Beach Boys
Slint

That's it...

Elvis is Dead, Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

funny, those are the first 2 I'd take out.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait, you think DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE likes all that music?

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The Indie Canon is:

Gang of Four
The Beatles
The Stones
The VU
The Smiths
Joy Division

etc

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, Jon, that's not a bad playlist at all. I'm glad to see they are still at least decent. Not, you know, playing emo and Creed and nu-metal and Dave Matthews Band and shit like that. Every college station can't be all-noise all-the-time, you know?

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

That playlist is fucking bullshit mostly. The people who run the station kinda bullshit together people's lists so they have a better top list so they get better promo shit from dsitributers. Mostly the station seems to play DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE and things like that.

Still kinda boring though. I like a lot of that stuff though, but its just all blah blah blah indie for the most part.

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I hear you man. It could definitely be more adventurous. But most college stations TOTALLY suck-ass....

I think the first place I ever heard Sonic YOuth was on WRUR! Or maybe it was on RIT's station, I forget.. They both used to be pretty good stations though.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 3 April 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that station is just about as adventerous under its own guidelines (a college station) as any major modern rock, R&B or hip hop station is, if not more so.

But you are correct, Death Cab are sickeningly bad.

David Allen (David Allen), Saturday, 3 April 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Dodgy and Supernaturals :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 3 April 2004 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll put aside my displeasure with the lumping category of 'indie' for this one, which I believe I share with many of you. (A band that self consciously tries to be 'indie' is pretty lame to begin with)

The question is, are these the artists you wish 'indie' bands were influenced by, are these the artists you think they secretly are influenced by but are too ignorant of history to realize, or are these just artists you like that may have a lot or nothing to do with today's indie groups?

Because there are many artists coming out today in various genres and subgenres influenced by these artists. Kraut Rock for example has had a visible influence on a number of indie artists (as long as you aren't limiting indie to Pavement clones). Queen's legacy is more debatable. I don't really see Queen as a particularly strong influence on much of today's indie scene (Of course there are exceptions- there are always exceptions).

But for better or worse, the artists from the 60's/70's/80's (Along with others such as Bowie, Velvet Underground, the Smiths, etc) you mention tend to be very influential on a large portion of the indie scene.

Jeff MH (Jeff MH), Sunday, 4 April 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd leave it as it is. you can come up with paul specht or bix beiderbecke or mussorgsky or dion, or whoever you think is missing, but, believe me, it'd be worse.

you see jon, the problem with your list, is that it may be a decent enough list, but its a list that looks like the wishlist for any number of dire avant bands. its things like this that gave us future pilot aka.

a 'good record collection' often leads to bobby gillespie, rather than good music

gareth (gareth), Sunday, 4 April 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The people who run the station kinda bullshit together people's lists so they have a better top list so they get better promo shit from dsitributers.

Umm, yeah pretty much everyone does that, but it doesn't do anyone any good (I do playlists and do them acurately and we have gotten better CDs than ever). Its more dependent on how big yr stations is (ie what they are 'rated' as by CMJ) (and kissing ass, etc.) Thats why my station would never get something like the Homosexual's records or anything from Thrill Jockey or whatever sent to us and I have to beg for a lot of other stuff. Some of the shit they are charting is ridiculous though, Moon and Antartica? WTF?

Not to be indie, but my policy is to take ot major label stuff after 4 or 5 weeks in the hopes of sparing everyone from hearing Sounds and Von Bondies and shit more than we need.

And if kids actually knew anything about the 'indie canon' and made their playlists accordingly I'd be a lot happier. Cause I heard Cake like 4 times this week, I swear. No one even knew we had Gang of Four records until I dug them out of the dance section! And no one will fucking play any hip-hop except Atmosphere OVER AND OVER.

Ahh tangential rant sorry.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 4 April 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Indie rock cannon? God help us if there's a war.

N. (nickdastoor), Sunday, 4 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Indie Jihad!

christhamrin (christhamrin), Sunday, 4 April 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

when did crimson wear costumes ?

mike bott, Sunday, 4 April 2004 22:01 (twenty-one years ago)

no fules forgetting sabbath!!!!

my ideal indie rock band would be influenced by them, johnny cash, whitehouse and my bloody valentine.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 5 April 2004 03:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Lil' Won, have you looked into recent avant-prog or -funk/fusion (or minimal/ambient/noise electronica) stuff? You might possibly find more of what you're looking for in those areas than in indie rock. At least I do.

(I'm just now finishing listening to Einstein in its entirety for the first time. Disc 4 is more than I expected from Glass - and I really like much of his stuff).

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 5 April 2004 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Sundar:

Avant Prog = Flying Luttenbachers + Lightning Bolt + Ruins?

Funk Fusion = !!! + Out Hud?

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Monday, 5 April 2004 04:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Please remove from the indie rock cannon:

Spacemen 3

Aaron A., Monday, 5 April 2004 04:15 (twenty-one years ago)

"Please remove from the indie rock cannon:

Spacemen 3"

Or howzabout just reduce it to their first few records (plus that posthumous early recordings LP--forget the name--For All the Fucked up Children of the World or something--on Sympathy)?

Tim Ellison, Monday, 5 April 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Remove from the indie cannon:

The VU
The Ramones
The Cars
The Police
The Clash
The Sex Pistols

Lil' Won Jilliams (ex machina), Monday, 5 April 2004 04:57 (twenty-one years ago)

removing the ramones & the VU is silly, jon.

KEEP YR HANDS OFF MY CANON

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 5 April 2004 05:14 (twenty-one years ago)

add XTC, Steely Dan

tyler (tyler), Monday, 5 April 2004 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I was thinking along the lines of Fiuczynski's Headless Torsos for P-Funk and noise influences. Maybe also Dave Douglas' Freak In. And maybe Bill Frisell's more ambient moody take on jazzy electric guitar improv. All the minimalist stuff you mention (+ the funk) suggests that electronica and hip-hop might have more to offer you. I was thinking of avant-prog like Thinking Plague - I'm not sure how you'd take to them. Maybe even some Fred Frith stuff like Ayaya Moses or Massacre's Funny Valentine, all of which combines noise, prog, and improv without many real punk/indie elements. If, as it sounds, you want to get away from punk and indie influences altogether, you might want to look at separate genres.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 5 April 2004 05:21 (twenty-one years ago)

But, out of curiosity, do you know/like Oneida's Each One Teach One?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 5 April 2004 05:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Were Gang of Four in the canon before 2002? (pre-DFA days)
I don't think so.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 5 April 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

KURT COBAIN LIKED GANG OF FOUR

Lil' Fancy Pants (ex machina), Monday, 5 April 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

The new wave/post-punk revival PER SE goes back to about '97 w/ Satisfact, Gogogoairheart, Computer Cougar, etc.

Tim Ellison, Monday, 5 April 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

There should be a band that is influeced by "Dream On" era Aerosmith and Orthrelm!

Lil' Fancy Pants (ex machina), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i want to see a band that is equal parts Napalm Death & DJ Krush.

It would be the worst thing evah.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian, that sounds really good....

Lil' Fancy Pants (ex machina), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

There is a website for Factrix finally -(there will be more content in the near future): http://geocities.com/factrix@pacbell.net/

Satonya, Friday, 9 April 2004 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

six years pass...

I've been listening to Crooked Rain and getting into Bongripper and Jam City so I'll head to the garage and get to work.

I wish there was a power up that would slim me down and increase my Malkmosity. Not a lot of room for husky dudes in indie; ya gotta be a rake or a D

Franklin_The_Turtle, Sunday, 6 March 2011 01:47 (fourteen years ago)

Hi Ho Sliver

Morcheeba, simply happening. (PaulTMA), Sunday, 6 March 2011 03:00 (fourteen years ago)

I'm perfectly aware of D. Boone, I was just trying to figure out the relevance of being a husky Malkmus-impersonator working in a garage had to do with the rest of the thread.

Congratulations, you've just won a Nintendo iPod. (kelpolaris), Sunday, 6 March 2011 03:16 (fourteen years ago)
