so i've owned "it's great to be straight - yeah" for a few years without really listening to it, and i threw it on the other day and was surprised to find that i loved it! i get the sense they're not very highly regarded - "not as good as the mondays, hopeless self-parody," that kinda thing. never having paid much attention to the mondays i can't say, but i do rate this album at least. did they ever do anything else of note?

"Shake Well Before Opening" is massively enjoyable, I'll say that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 3 April 2004 23:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The 1st album is better than any mondays album.

Indie Bastard, Saturday, 3 April 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I like "Reverend Black Grape" a lot.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 3 April 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

indeed, that song in itself is a classic. "you do nothing but socialize and become a menace, why don't you put on your Reeboks, man, and go play fuckin' tennis"!!!!

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 3 April 2004 23:51 (twenty-one years ago)

classic for the debut single and the Goldie remix of 'Fatneck'

stevem (blueski), Saturday, 3 April 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I wasn't crazy about anything but the first album, but I still listen to "It's Great..." and I dig it enough to have kept it this long.

Has anybody EVER bothered to listen to Stupid Stupid Stupid?

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 4 April 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

my brother had it, I vaguely remember the single with the cleverly spliced together samples of Ronal Reagan speeches.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 4 April 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

also the supposed origin of the title Stupid Stupid Stupid is pretty great (what they said in place of the line "bullshit bullshit bullshit" when asked to change lyrics to perform "Reverend Black Grape" on television).

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 4 April 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved Stupid Stupid Stupid. Get Higher = genuinely funny, though it wears off after a while. "Dadi Was A Badi" has the stupidest lyrics ever, which make it great, and "Marbles" was another good, daft singalong. I rate it higher than the first album.

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 4 April 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

The "jesus was black, man/ jesus was batman/ no, that was bruce wayne" line cracks me up every time.

Classic.

spittle (spittle), Sunday, 4 April 2004 05:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ultra dud. let's get serious.

paulhw (paulhw), Monday, 5 April 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ihad Spittle's line in my head this morning, 'Heroes' is the only Ryder thing I like much (maybe '24 Hour Party People' too)

five years pass...

Huh.

There's not one band that won't reform, except for the 'previously really successful ones', it seems.

Mark G, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 23:13 (fifteen years ago)

Just watching "England's Irie" there..

Forgot that Keith Allen was on that.

Didn't forget that that was Joe Strummer's only appearance at the TOTP studio!

Mark G, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

I dug out "It's Great..." the other day for the first time since the nineties... you know, for old times sake. It really hasn't aged as badly as I expected. Shake Your Money should've been a single. What was with the quasi-religious imagery in his lyrics (with this band and HM?)

dog latin, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

Growing up in the sixties, innit?

Mark G, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

Still a great album. Played it last year. They were great live the 3 times I saw them before and after it came out. Never heard he 2nd album.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

Don't! It's worse than Yes Please.

(nb Yes Please doesn't suck, but the lack of engagement hit harder and faster this time.)

Amused to see this is all in aid of a "Greatest Hits" album.

Pre-FAP Stout (King Boy Pato), Thursday, 4 February 2010 00:52 (fifteen years ago)

saw them live in 95: epic.

Shake Your Money should've been a single.

did exactly the same earlier this, using spotify and YES shake your money is brilliant and should really have been a single

I always felt like Black Grape accomplished what the Mondays tried to do the entire time.

26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Saturday, 6 February 2010 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

Aye, It's Great... is fantastic; really fucking awesome production too, from memory. Great drum sound, great bass, plenty going on but all very sharply funky.

No, YOU'RE a disgusting savage (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 6 February 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

It's Great when you're straight is the best album shaun ryder ever made.

I feel like I really ought to hear this band more. Why do I never hear them anywhere ever??

DERE is no DERE DERE (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 20 August 2014 03:30 (eleven years ago)

I really really like 3 of the songs on Stupid Stupid Stupid - "Get Higher", "Marbles", and "Money Back Guaranteed"

two years pass...

and one in 2024!

anatol_merklich, Thursday, 1 February 2024 13:55 (one year ago)

Often fascinated to find out what a band like Black Grape could possibly be doing in 2024. In an alternative universe they could have been on a level with Gorillaz

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Thursday, 1 February 2024 14:46 (one year ago)

Well... take Shaun Ryder out of this and it's a certifiable funky pop record. He does kind of ruin it though

...eh you get the gist of it (dog latin), Thursday, 1 February 2024 14:53 (one year ago)

It's great... is indeed, a great album.

B. Amato (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 1 February 2024 15:13 (one year ago)

so what happened here did Ryder hear a Sleaford Mods tune and go "oh damn I guess it's my time to shine" ??

frogbs, Thursday, 1 February 2024 15:53 (one year ago)

Ohhhh my radar didn't pick up on this one! I love Shaun Ryder's lyrics

xp uh oh, he's been listening to Sleaford Mods? dammit

a hyperlink to the past (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 1 February 2024 15:55 (one year ago)

hahaha I have no idea, just wondering if he heard a tune by them and thought wildly off key middle-aged British men were in again

checked out 3 tunes from this on YouTube, sounds pretty good! I remember liking the 2017 album too, tracks come up on shuffle and I'm always like "wait what is this?" But then Shaun comes in...

henry s, Thursday, 1 February 2024 17:56 (one year ago)

Any indication of who the “band” is this time? Youth and Otherorbbloke again?

bae (sic), Thursday, 1 February 2024 18:38 (one year ago)

kind of wonder who is writing/producing the music, surely it's not Ryder...?

frogbs, Thursday, 1 February 2024 19:17 (one year ago)

Well... take Shaun Ryder out of this and it's a certifiable funky pop record. He does kind of ruin it though

This take has me severely mystified.
