People being visibly uncomfortable when you play loud and confrontational hip hop at work -- c/d?

I realize this is somewhat of a loaded question, but...why do they squirm so? I can sit through all the Primus live stuff without too many problems.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe they don't like hip-hop.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 5 April 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Any kind of loud music at work would annoy me.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Because its loud and confrontational?

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

But to be honest, my reaction would probably be laughter.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Particularly if you're playing NWA and you're a receptionist in a police squad room.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate listening to any music i don't have control over when i'm at work.

i am a moody fuck.

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Doryy worry, it sucks at parties, too.

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 April 2004 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

people shouldn't be allowed to listen to any music not through headphones at work, that's what I think. Oh Julie, I love you, but you kill me with your Norah Jones on continual repeat for the PAST WEEK.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

altho the classical music on the PA in the bathrooms/lobby is a nice break

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Loud Norah Jones would be worse than loud confrontational rap. But really, any type of loud music that gets forced on other people at work is an annoyance. I don't want to listen to the crappy choices in music my stupid co-workers make.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 5 April 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I just got the new B@rbie-Mix CD, featuring kiddie versions (as in BY kids) of today's top hits, including "Hey Ya!" Would that I could crank this shit up, but we have no hi-fi in this office. The disc-drives on most of the computers have been disabled.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

When I worked in a restaurant I specifically listened to certain things to watch the obvious oncomfortability of my coworkers. On a good day I could squeeze in Hampton Grease Band and Squarepusher before they flipped out and unplugged the boombox from the wall about halfway through the third disc of that Zorn Masada series.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Because its loud and confrontational?

You might have a point. But have you ever sat through an 80 minute Primus live CD?

(x-post speaking of Primus...)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I would probably stab someone to death with scissors if they tried to play an 80 minute Primus cd.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I get uncomfortable by making people uncomfortable, so I always listen to the least offensive music I own while at work.

oops (Oops), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Enjoying loud and confrontational music, C.
Foisting your choices on other people, D.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not being deliberately confrontational, I just want to listen to the Ying Yang Twinz without being made to feel that I am being deliberately confrontational. It was unwise of me to use the word "confrontational" in the thread title, perhaps.

(x-post working all day in one room with six other people and one stereo c/d?)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i give it a dud but i didn't read past the word 'day'

oops (Oops), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I feel that I am posting a lot of pointless and ill thought-out things to ILX at the moment. Perhaps it is time for a little hiatus.

haha

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to lie down now

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I only foist my most harsh musical taste on the asshatishest of asshats. The kind of motherfuckers who called Stevie Wonder 'n****r music" with a straight face. Fuck them, they deserve all the "Rated X" a boombox can force down their earhole.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they deserve a boombox forced down their earhole.

oops (Oops), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Nobody deserves Primus though -- that's just beyond the pale.

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

headphones are a beautiful invention....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

...but hard to wear when you are on your feet all day helping people, no?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that the upshot of this thread is that I need a good solid data entry job.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rated X" + boombox =

Broheems (diamond), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

...but hard to wear when you are on your feet all day helping people, no?

this is true....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Headphones are often considered pretty unprofessional as well.

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 5 April 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

not if you work in A/V

sexyDancer, Monday, 5 April 2004 19:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm lucky to work in a very "loose" work environment.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 5 April 2004 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Last job I had- one of the lawyers was VERY UPSET about the playing of Outkast. She said "There are too many beats". I didn't know that was possible

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 5 April 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

therefore CLASSIC

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Monday, 5 April 2004 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

.. i'd love to have the chance to listen to music at work, headphones or not..

chris a, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 01:44 (twenty-one years ago)

outkast is "confrontational hip-hop"?!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 01:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Nobody deserves Primus though -- that's just beyond the pale.

You have to grant Nickalicious the ability to play this, though, he's Nickalicious!

She said "There are too many beats"

Your boss was Jeffrey Jones, Emperor of Austria?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Emperor of Norway, maybe?

El Diablo Robotico (Nicole), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

That somehow gives me the idea for a black metal 3 CD opera.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 01:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Because you work at an art museum?

cs appleby (cs appleby), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

outkast is "confrontational hip-hop"?

For middle-aged white people who are lawyers, yes

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i still find that rather hard to believe

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

45 in 2004 means you were only 19 in 1979

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

suddenly i got an image of george wendt in MJ's "black or white" video

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

She said "There are too many beats".

This is kinda how people saying "[so and so] has more rhythm" sounds to me in WTFishness.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe she's russian and meant "beets"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

she's German-Canadian and has "issues" relating to her dad being a Nazi. You'd think she'd embrace the beats

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The penultimate track on 2ManyDJs really didn't go down well in my office AT ALL.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Everyone that works in an office setting needs to have a ten-times-the-volume-level-of-the-preceding-track mp3 of "Ass N Titties" come up on their winAMP random play at least once in life.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Best dirty stares ever.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

She said "There are too many beats".

That's the same thing she tells her husband when he suggests the restaurant that's just a little too far downtown...

Clarke B. (Clarke B.), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

if she had a husband instead of two cats and a ball-breaking voice, snap

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

not if you work in A/V

see word: "often"

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in jail once, and the cops/receptionists did in fact play loud confrontational rap music. And they were watching "COPS" on TV.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

It was really late, and those whole place had kind of a party atmosphere.

Chris H. (chrisherbert), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I've always wondered if cops liked NWA

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never worked in an office where people can play music. How does it work? Does everyone have their own stereo? Doesn't it sound like a hubbub of different styles all over the place? If not, doesn't everyone just have a stereo war?

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Enjoying what you like without being a dick about it, classic.
Deliberately making people uncomfortable, big fat dud.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you sure you're not just playing shitty hip-hop?

Sasha (sgh), Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

When I worked in a second-hand bookshop we used to play harsh music - generally droney or noise stuff - specifically to drive the customers away when we needed to get on with putting new stock out or if we just wanted a break. If one complained we'd look concerned and write their exact words down in a notebook to laugh at later. One of the record shops in the same chain apparently used to put on old ZX Spectrum game tapes to get the same effect.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I swear if I never hear this fucking Red Hot Chili Peppers album again it will be too soon. Like, once a day for the past week.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

At work we are forced to listen to City FM Liverpools most Atomic Kitten, DJ Sammy friendly station, if I turn it off and put some Lali Puna on I get stares, hell even Kruder and Dorfmeister is too much for some people.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Kruder and Dorfmeister is too much what, exactly? That's some of the least threatening music I've ever heard.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Primus use the word "nigger" on their live album? That word can get people squirming in a work enviornment pretty easily.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

you know what's good for getting customers out? Oval!

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

This is how I would repond:

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 8 April 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

you know what's good for getting customers out? Oval!

A surefire way to make this customer fall in love with the girl who works at the store.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 8 April 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

needless to say, I don't work there anymore

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 9 April 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

five years pass...

Why is hip-hop so difficult for some older people to understand? I mean, my parents understand it, they heard similar stuff in the rock or reggae or r & b of the sixties and seventies (maybe they are not like other parents)? It's not as if hip-hop was born in 1988 from nothing. I grew up in an urban area, I don't understand this. My mom is not a fan of the language and subjects but at least she "gets" the aesthetics.

Department of Energy Department (u s steel), Thursday, 9 July 2009 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

Why is hip-hop so difficult for some older people to understand?

For the same reason thirty, forty years from now you'll be saying things that cause your kids to roll their eyes, even with the best of intentions.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 July 2009 21:50 (sixteen years ago)

old peoples brains are full

Sleep Causes Cancer (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 9 July 2009 21:56 (sixteen years ago)

velko, Thursday, 9 July 2009 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

^not a good look for Dr. Velko, OBGYN

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 9 July 2009 21:58 (sixteen years ago)

Ned I hope not, then I'll beat them with a switch! My children will worship me for teaching them real music history.

Department of Energy Department (u s steel), Thursday, 9 July 2009 21:59 (sixteen years ago)

If my jazz -loving grandpa were still alive he'd be amused at hip-hop videos, not alienated or confused.

Department of Energy Department (u s steel), Thursday, 9 July 2009 22:00 (sixteen years ago)

finding something alienating /= being confused by it

Sleep Causes Cancer (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 9 July 2009 22:02 (sixteen years ago)
