That'd be classic or dud for the Joe Levy-inclined...

I hear that his head is enormous and he has tiny feet.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

coming soon to bookstores, "Everything I Know about Rock Critics I Learned from Either ILX or the Rock Critical List" by Alex in SF

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha well everyone's head looks big on those VH1 things.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)

You're not on VH-1, Alex.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously though OTHER than seeing this guy on VH1 and seeing his name on the Rock Critical List I couldn't tell you #1 thing about Joe Levy or any opinion he holds or what sort of music he likes or even what magazine he works for these days and I would be shocked if any one not associated with that insular NYC music critic world could either. Is there a reason why anyone should know or care who he is?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I think you answered your own question.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex so OTM.

Who the fuck is this guy? What the hell has he ever done to earn that smarmy voice he used to write with, when he was in the Voice? I don't know one damn thing about the guy other than he got a couple inches in there every issue, but boy he just seemed like a bog old tool.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

(x-post)Well I figured it was possible that I missed a book he wrote, but okay I guess not.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

and a big old tool, too!

I think I called for his death on some other thread. But that was not a nice thing to do.

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay Matt (who is clever enough to realize that I am currently not on VH1) so why is this guy who is basically a non-entity as a critic a "dudder than dud" and why is he even worthy of a thread?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way Matos will I be able to buy your Prince book before mine hits the shelves? ;)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

HA HA. Well, VH-1's based in SF, right?

Seriously, he's worthy of a thread. A few of his appearances on VH-1 were so risibly hideous that they were literally beyond words. I'm thinking of the one where he was doing Butthead impressions when talking about some chick he wanted - "Huh, Huh," that sort of thing.

Oh, and I think he's at RS...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and based on the fact that I'm seeing threads right now called "Steve Miller Band - Classic or Dud" and "Spongebob Rocks!!", I think this putz warrants an angry word or two..

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, his top 90 videos of the 90s commentary was definitely threadworthy

Sym (shmuel), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

What Prince books are we talking about, anyway? Dunno about you folks, but I thought Purple Reign wasn't bad, all things considered...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Levy's been at Rolling Stone for a few years, was at the Voice and Details before that, probably other places I don't know--I'm going off the top here, don't know his resume intimately or anything--and is by all accounts a brilliant line editor, which goes a long way in the journo biz. (I also like his writing a lot, or at least did back when I was reading it a lot, c. early-mid 90s.) the Prince book we are talking about is the one I wrote about Sign 'O' the Times (more detail here) that's out this month--got my copies last week and should be in stores REAL soon. (apologies or blatant plugging but hey he asked etc.)

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 05:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I interned at SPIN when he was a senior editor, and he's actually a really nice guy.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course he is.
