The Stands really annoys me as a name. runner-up may be The French. as for which of them sound the worst in music terms, you can discuss that here too.

The The

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

The Shitty McDirtbags

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

If we're limiting ourselves solely to 'the' bands, then The Thrills win this walking backwards blindfolded.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The Dirty McShitbags

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Thrills as a name isn't band, tho it is exceptionlly misleading

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i call The The 'That Bald Dude' instead, out of a mixture of sincerity and contempt.

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The Hold Steady is pretty awful (not the band, just the name)

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The Delays is a pretty naff name. I certainly thought 'heh, they're running out of five & six letter words' when I saw that one.

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

But you see, they're actually called Delays. No 'The' at the start.

Somehow that's even worse.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm surprised The Fast hasn't been done - how long til?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with Mr.Swygart. Even some of the bands I love (Swans, Buzzcocks, Cocteau Twins, Cranes) pull the "there's no the" stunt. Hate that.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

pixies?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm surprised The Fast hasn't been done - how long til?

It has -- they were a '70s glam band.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

The Get Up Kids

haha I'm also reminded of a college DJ from the late '90s at my old school who played something by "the Belle and Sebastians". I don't think he was kidding.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

How about the Slow?

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Sometimes no 'the' can work. With Delays, it really, really doesn't.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

no way, The Hold Steady is a great name. I'm for more The bands whose noun has no business being in a phrase with "The", like the Get Hustle

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 15:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure if I love or hate this (and I've never heard the music), but:

The Music! such audacity (i don't mind a couple of their tracks tho)

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The Music is a VERY misleading name

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm for more The bands whose noun has no business being in a phrase with "The", like the Get Hustle

Totally. Or, rather, The Totally.

Nick Mirov (nick), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, a thousand gold doubloons to the first "The" band who insists on spelling it "Teh". Bonus points for additionally insisting that their name be spelled in ALL CAPS ALL TEH TIME.

Re: Absent "The"s

Screw them. Always reference them with the "the" at the start. We have the power, people.

from now on my new band is called TEH SLITHY TOVES.

zappi (joni), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd say The Music based purely on the lack of forethought with respect to prospective fans being able to Google "The Music" and actually find a page for the fucking band.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

The The are also guilty of this

the impossible shortest special path! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "The Gay" is genius... as in "I hope I don't catch the Gay." Has anyone been called The Pot, as in "Have you been smoking the pot?"
Maybe that would be the worst one ever, actually.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

My mom would always cut out articles from the Washington Post when I was growing up and be like "Hey, Ben, I cut out an article about that band you like, The Fugazi." (which, of course, was the source of wild amusement for me).

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

These may belong in an entirely different category, but howbout those bands that can't even bother to spell "The" CORRECTLY? Like "Thee Headcoats" or "Th' Inbred?" That really infuriates me!
(Hey, remember that shoegaze-era joke about Th' Faith Healers having their letter 'e' stolen by Thee Hypnotics?)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

With the presumable exception of ones that spell it "Teh", of course

nice!

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The The had a good excuse though. Google wasn't around for most of their career.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

"Google wasn't around for most of their career."

Well, yeah. But regardless....

Thinking about it, it's a good way to avoid file-sharing piracy.

the impossible shortest special path! (the impossible shortest specia), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

...or exposing file-sharers to your stuff and maybe increasing sales.

(Again though, The The, or any googleproof band name pre-1994 couldn't have predicted the whole search-engine phenomenon.)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"Again though, The The, or any googleproof band name pre-1994 couldn't have predicted the whole search-engine phenomenon."

No no of course not, there was never any contest of that point.

OMG Ben Boyer, my mom totally did stuff like that too! only it was TV-related, so she'd tell me stuff like "That Big Audio Dynamite was on CNN this morning" and sometimes she'd write it down to remember it. I love my mommy

Bands that sometimes use "the" and sometimes don't, such as (The) Smashing Pumpkins.

Lewis J. Bateman (Lewis Bateman), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

'The Kills' strikes me as a particularly empty and cliché name. They could be in an exploitation movie or something.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

The Coldplay?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The Slipknots, no doubt.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone said the band yet?

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

someone should name themselves 'the bands'. That would confuse people.

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Unfortunately, I have friends in a band called The Rock & Roll Adventure Kids.

"The Hoobastank"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The Yards, who I saw last Friday supporting Love (see, no "The" there!), have such a terminally awful name that I forgot it seven times DURING THEIR GIG, even though I was holding one of their CDs in my hand at the time.

Their singer is Chris "I was in The Seahorses" Helme and their guitarist, if I'm not mistaken, is Paul Banks from Shed Seven. Nuff said, I think.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Yards is nearly as bad as The Stands...I mean do they expect people to remember that? ffs
