Has anyone seen them recently?
Are they playing new & old stuff??

sej, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw them on Thursday. Not much of an expert on them, owning less than fifty of their albums, but they did a lot of stuff from the last album, Mr Pharmacist, and something else oldish that I recognised. It was really good.

MES was sitting at a desk at the back nursing his broken leg for most of it. Somebody shouted something about it and he yelled 'ahyam uh cccRIPPLE-uhoh-ah'. His wife/keyboard playing lady is also the most beautiful lady ever ever.

ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, go, because eventually he will die and you will be able to say that YOU SAW THE FALL.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still bitter 'cause they cancelled their Canadian tour last summer.

alex in montreal, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, go. They played The Move's 'I Can hear the Grass Grow' the other night, but perhaps only because they were in Birmingham. And 'I am Damo Suzuki'. They've also regularly played oldies 'Middlemass' and 'Mere Pseud mag Ed' on this tour, plus mid-period 'Telephone Thing' and 'Big New Prinz'. Oh yes, and their cover of 'Walk Like a Man'

bloke (bloke), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, you should go see THE FALL.

Saw them sometime in the last year and they were on fine form. Granted, Smith was in enough of a state to have an arguement with his mic stand, but somehow he still delivered. I don't think there has been much of a lineup change since, so they should be well worth seeing.

mmmmsalt (Graeme), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Godda, at least once.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw them last year after not having seen them for ten years. They were just okay. The Fall are not THE FALL without Steve Hanley.

rw, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

A friend that saw them last year said it was "Rightous! You couldn't make out one word Mark E. Smith was ranting and raving. Every song sounded the same."

brg30 (brg30), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

typical Fall show, then, eh?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, go see The Fall. I believe they have nearly the same line-up from last year's tour that kicked ass, at least at the Chicago show. Older stuff like Damo Szuki and Hip Priest were amazing live, and Sparta FC actually stuck with me till the new album finally came out. From reports of the UK shows, it sounds like a wheelchair-bound MES is capable of causing plenty of trouble on stage.
NOW...should I go see his reading, too? Anybody seen the man solo?

Bren, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw them last year, and they rocked it non-stop, but just kinda hovered in this very static "rock" height and never strayed from it.. in fact the band would stop and Mark E. would just continue shouting.. he never took a break. What was weird was that Mark E. would just calmly pace around the stage in nice gray slacks the entire time while shouting.. occasionally turning his back to the audience to very slowly fiddle with the band's amps' knobs. It was like some surreal post-punk version of the Cosby Show. They did an unusual amount of mid to late 80s material.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

(admittedly, i went mainly because I want to say I've seen the Fall live once in my lifetime.. the show itself was alright, but nothing too memorable though)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

of the last three lineups I've seen live, this is the best one. especially if his wife is still in the band. She's hysterically put on and scary.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a Pittsburgher who would like to meet up with local Fall fans to see the April 22 Brewhouse show. Drop me a line.

I'm picturing Mark singing "Walk Like a Man" and "I Can Hear the Grass Grow." Anyone noticed that The Fall, since about the first time that Brix left, have become one of the great covers bands of all time? Would have like to have heard the cover of the New York Dolls' "Jet Boy" that they were doing live some years back.

The Saints cover on the Marshall Plan album wasn't very good, though.

Tim Ellison, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

haha he should do the marmalade's 'i see the rain'

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Saying you've seen the Fall's a bit like saying you've had sex really isn't it.

In B'ham they did a fast punky song that involved Mess shouthing 'He is not' and the rest of the band shouting 'APPRECIATED!' - is this a version of Hip Priest or a new song with the same lyrics? He also strategically knocked over mic stands and bombarded the drummist with screwed up bits of paper - aw.

ferg (Ferg), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

YES

ferg - the song is 'Big New Prinz'

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Saying you've seen the Fall's a bit like saying you've had sex really isn't it.

Yeah, except seeing the Fall repeatedly afterwards isn't guaranteed to be as rewarding.

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I've greatly enjoyed The Fall every time I've seen them, and I own very few of their records. I strongly recommend going to see them.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

the last couple of times i've seen them they've been functional... the thing is you just never know...

if you've never seen them, then yes. and the keyboard girl is very beautiful.

Last night Mark E. Smith wore one black glove

that's possibly the most disturbing of all the disturbing things I've heard about MES ever

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 9 April 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

"Mama say-uh mama suh mama-kous-uh!"

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Friday, 9 April 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm going to be corny and request that they play "jawbone and the air-rifle". fuck are they going to hate me!

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Friday, 9 April 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

So, is anybody going to advise me against this??

(Sorry, I'm nervous. I haven't seen them in EONS)

Collardio Gelatinous (collardio), Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Ferg - Well, it is a version of Hip Priest, as Sasha says called Big New Prinz. It's from 1988's Kurious Oranj album/ballet. It's a standard set-closer at the moment.

Tim - I'm struggling with '...Grass Grow' but 'Walk Like a Man' actually makes pretty good sense as a Fall cover when you hear it. No falsetto, obviously...

bloke (bloke), Saturday, 10 April 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I got hold of it, I've been caning it recently. Lord, it POUNDS.

ferg (Ferg), Saturday, 10 April 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the idea of Mark hearing the grass grow.

Tim Ellison, Saturday, 10 April 2004 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd advise against shouting out requests. You have a better chance of getting the Wedding Present to do an encore.

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 10 April 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, donut bitch, I just wanted somebody to tell me what I already knew. I'll be good and just cross my fingers instead.
