well alex, i'm not the type of listener who thinks of henry rollins necessarily when i think of black flag. but if you think henry was a straight edge guy in his black flag days, i recommend reading about his days with chuck dukowski in the get in the van book.

Ya may be right....I seem to remember reading something about Henry doing acid or something in the Black Flag days, so maybe you're right. I still associate Rollins with the D.C. straightedge scene, hence the disparity of impressions.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Greg Ginn was a total stoner even if Henry probably spent too much time around Ian.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

rollins never associated himself with being straight edge, but he did think (circa 1984 at least) that people who smoked pot were weak/pathetic for letting a plant control them. "hilarious." he did experiment, but to a very small extent. on the other hand, most of the other members from black flag were major pot heads (as told from get in the van), so i'm not sure if i agree with the yes OR no split.

jj Jjjjj jjj, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I tend to agree with Rollins to a degree.
There's nothing wrong with using it, even if you do it a lot;
but if you tend to talk or think about it often, that's kinda
lame. I consider weed a means, not an end unto itself.

Actually there was an interesting story on Boing Boing about how Acid has risen in price about 5 fold due to loss of supply and that fewer people are doing it now than ever previously.
http://www.boingboing.net/2004/04/06/why_is_lsd_use_down.html

The reference in that story to the Pickard and Apperson case is kind of understated in places:

>First and foremost, the DEA busted a couple of guys in rural Kansas >back in 2000, who supplied 95 percent of the country's acid.

busted = life imprisonment without parole in one case. Poor bastards.

For some reason I can't find in the press reports, Sting was called
as a witness in that case.

Every trip-hop artist ever to thread.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Sunday, 9 May 2004 00:01 (twenty-one years ago)

"So what explains the LSD drought? The best explanation is a bust, a really big bust. The DEA claims it reduced the LSD supply by "95 percent" with two arrests in rural Kansas in November 2000. Clyde Apperson and William Leonard Pickard were charged with and eventually convicted of possession and conspiracy to distribute LSD. According to court testimony, the DEA seized the largest operable LSD laboratory in agency history, as well as 91 pounds of LSD and precursor compounds for the potential manufacture of nearly 27 pounds more. If you define a dose of LSD as 100 micrograms, Apperson and Pickard had around 400 million hits in stock. At the more common dosage level of 20 micrograms, the two were sitting on 2 billion hits. Apperson got 30 years in prison, and Pickard got two life sentences. The Kansas bust marked the third time in four years that the DEA had arrested Apperson and Pickard on LSD lab charges. "
