i forget where i read that ghost was there but the production wasn't. "more breaks than kurtis blow in traction." but he raps too fast and i always forget to listen to him and when it's quiet enough to hear him he's saying stuff like, "her sister got a nice bubble. i used to fuck her while she got seeded by bags from brooklyn. she cut me off when she turned muslim. i need some pussy, though. that kind that be gushy, though. that warm platinum pussy with a dynamic pussy hole. i got to fuck something. if not, i'ma fuck my girl." i really do like it a lot but i hope other people like it more.

William Wiggins, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

my favorites are run with jadakiss (the other two guest verses [comp and trife?] in the single/video version are cut!) and biscuits with trife and tooken back with jacki-o (!!) and beat the clock.

William Wiggins, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i was gonna post a thread about this earlier today, but then had to do real work.

i haven't heard it yet. hoping it's gonna be good. i was surprised by Tush, but i dig it. and Run is great

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Wha? It finally exists? Did "Beatles" still make it on?

*splutter*
is this out - has this been released??

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i read that it comes out April 20th but it's been leaked

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

NO "BEATLES"? GODDAMMIT

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

what is this "beatles" song of which you speak...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

it's on mixtapes and can probably be found on the http://www.wutangcorp.com

they take a jazz cover version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps and play it in its entirety while ghost raps over it, no extra production.

they also do this on Wise (In the Rain) which i LOVE

JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the video for "Tush" the other day. It sounded good. Not jaw-dropping, but very good.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not a ZZ Top cover.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(couldn't find any images of above album on line, but couldn't resist with the "Pretty Toney" homage to this other great album :) )

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Connect THAT, Alex in EN WHY ZSEE!

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently, Ghost pays homage to that Doug E. Fresh cover because that same night Slick Rick gave him jewelry.

I'm waiting until the 20th, but the word has been incredibly positive so far. Better than BW, not as good as Supreme Clientele. A lot of old school breaks, a lot of woman talk. I expect a LOT from this album. He's one of my top five emcees, so I'm hoping he kills it.

"Holla" is classic in my eyes.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

If you told me 10 years ago that Ghost would be the only real Wu-survivor still puttin out quality product I would've thought you were crazy but here we are... he's really the only one consistently putting out good shit, the one who's done the most to stay "true to the game" so to speak. I thought BW was okay (Supreme Clientele is pure genius) but I'm really lookin forward to this... Ghost is one of those guys I just really want to see succeed and stick around.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

his continued longevity is always surprising to me considering he's probably the least "pop" of all the main wu players

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

assuming the "pop" end being Method Man/ODB = where the fuck are they???

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

making assy movies and being insane, respectively

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

And appearing at the Fillmore sometime next week in Method Man's case. When was the last time he released something (at least ODB has an excuse)?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

there was actually a meth single in 2003 that i dont think ever made it past mixtapes, but it was amazing. odb on the hook. it sounded like grime, actually.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that the "Ain't a Damn Thing Changed" song? Yeah that is really good.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 23:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The idea of Method Man touring to support a single only released on mixtapes strikes me as perfectly fitting with the Wu's at times completely bizarre marketing strategy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

he aint touring to promote anything but himself and his pocketbook

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really know what's up with "Run" because most versions on mixtapes and stuff are just Ghost and Kiss, but yeah the video/official version has Comp, who's from Baltimore and is a recent Def Jam signing, so DJ probably just pushed him onto the track to get him exposure, so I'm thinking he'll be on the official, but most mixtapes/stations cut off his verse because he's unknown. he's alright, though, I hope he gets some shine and reps my city.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Meth is also going to be in Soul Plane (with musical supervision by RZA to boot.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i think rza continues to be interesting if maddeningly inconsistent, but yeah- ghost has really had the best solo career. what happened to raekwon, anyway? was there some falling out? they used to be all over each other's albums.

rgeary (rgeary), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

also, those are unbelievable medallions. quality work ghost.

rgeary (rgeary), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

ghost is on the new rae single, isnt he?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i think you're right.

rgeary (rgeary), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

reunited and it feels so good

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

at the very least pretty toney is another in ghost's line of amazing record titles & covers

rgeary (rgeary), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Raewkon released an album last year, The Lex Diamond(s?) Story. It is a concept album about a drug lord. One of the skits has a dude getting beaten up by ravenous chimpanzees. That, sadly, is not enough to redeem the record.

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i know this is like sub-comic view territory here, but rappers really do probably have incredibly strong necks

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:32 (twenty-one years ago)

"ravenous chimpanzees"?!?!?! (Why do I have the strange feeling that Rae really liked 28 Days Later?)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i think there's an iron support rod running through his vertebrae out to his left hand to hold up all that gold!

rgeary (rgeary), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i heard the lex diamond story!

once

rgeary (rgeary), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

DON'T GIVE AWAY THE ENDING!!!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

what, you mean the stilted narration?

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

colin firth was really odb's dad all along

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

That's no surprise.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

rae and ghost were married for 24 hours after completing cuban linx, but it was annulled.

rgeary (rgeary), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

ODB just played at a club in town and Method Man is coming up in a week or so. State College gets a surprising amount of Wu-Biz.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Do people there wear Wu-wear? (Does ANYONE wear Wu-wear?)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

sadly the college circuit is probably their main feedbag these days

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Though the ODB show caused a near riot because all he did was sit down with his eyes closed while his assistants rapped four of his hits. Then they got some girls do dance around ODB while that Lumidee song played on the sound system twice. That was the show (according to multiple sources)...tickets were $25.

It's funny! We get jam bands, some emo and the Wu-Tang! Who'd a thunk it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

also, can we call a moratorium on guys who've been in the rap game for more than six years coming out and saying it's "corny".

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"this month in xxl: intelligent hoodlum on why rap sucks in '04"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I wish we cd call a moratorium on callers to hip-hop radio shows calling GK's "Holla" corny. And, hell, there's gotta be a little corn in the mix if you're gonna get on the radio.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

strongo that was like a koan or something

xpost w/David

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

this is definitely a stronger album than "Bulletproof wallets," by a mile.

And strongo, asking rappers who've been in the game this long not to be Pete Rockists is unneccessary and stupid cuz some are still releasing hot music. (Missy and Jay-Z are both pete rockists. Who the fuck cares).

djdee2005, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

"Biscuits" is like the most mindfucking combination of wistful and ornery

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Rollie's Vast Aire review is OTM but the number is too high.

djdee2005, Wednesday, 5 May 2004 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

check out the first four cuts on that tracklist i posted; they all segue together. perhaps that was the true opening to "pretty toney." whatever it is its a fucking great segue; the segues were one of my favorite parts of supreme clientele (the opening 6 tracks of which = best track sequencing on a rap album ever?) so it makes me sad that the tracklisting had to get mangled on this one coz it would've been great.

jake in portland (cerybut), Friday, 7 May 2004 21:22 (twenty-one years ago)

those first 4 tracks might fit together but the rest are odds and ends, remixes, and guest verses that have been floating about for a while....

thesplooge (thesplooge), Friday, 7 May 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I hadn't heard any of this stuff before and couldn't care less when/where it came from. I think all the songs hang together really well, there's definitely a cohesive old soul vibe to the whole thing and Ghost's delivery is fantastic (as usual).

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 7 May 2004 22:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I'm with Shakey, I've listened to this album three times today and it's pretty damn together - to be honest I could give a shit if I never hear a beatles sample again, so y'all can keep the one they left off

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 7 May 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

ah yes but those first four!!! whatever, im gonna go spend the rest of my life scientifically determining ghost's authorial intent

jake in portland (cerybut), Friday, 7 May 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with J0hn and Shakey (although I've heard the other shit, but I don't think its neccessary). Incidently J0hn, my roomate has been playing yr music all semester and I didn't even know it. Kudos, its great stuff. Not really my thing but its cool anyway.

djdee2005, Friday, 7 May 2004 23:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The ascending piano chord on "Biscuits" is just lovely. Also, let's give the man a hand for making most of the skits, which are usually tedious filler, into miniature tracks.

I have to say though, while Ghostface usually has keen fashion sense, that red pleather jacket he's sporting inside the cd booklet is just not doing it. It's not even Michael Jackson-retro-cool looking, it's just the ugliest thing I've seen in awhile. (sorry to get all 'white eye on the black guy' on you)

blar, Saturday, 8 May 2004 01:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that this is Ghost's best record yet - even better than Supreme Clientele, perhaps by virtue of its being shorter. There are tracks on all his other albums that I always skip (stuff like "Camay") but this one I've listened to all the way through many times and I like every single song, even the skit/interludes bear up under repeated listens.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 10 May 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Ghost's new record / even though the joint only went wood.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

since no one's mentioned it yet, can I say I really like "Ghostface", because it's so minimal, the obligatory sample is relegated to just punctuation of the beat, so ghost isn't battling against (or coasting on the back of) some classic soul singer for a change. he should do more stuff like this.

"Beat the Clock" and "Run" are also great, i agree

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
woa...the album is awesome. i knew the mixtape with some songs, but just got hold of the whole LP and its just flawless. it never looses steams, he pust such a great song as Run is towards the end. he simply can do it just like that. it finishes what the last album promised but never fullfiled - that he can crossover hardcore rap with soul. a great album, though i could do without the skits.

karl76 (karl76), Wednesday, 10 November 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago)

the skit before "Tooken Back" where he silently reads the letter with the radio playing in the background is priceless. This will definitely be near the top of any "year end" list for me. Next to that other great Ghost record of the year "Hypnotic Underworld".

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 10 November 2004 22:13 (twenty years ago)

I honestly like EVERY SONG on this album. Drop the skits and this sounds like a greatest hits album of some sort.
Also Tush owns the world.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:03 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, it is fantastic - every track has such identity, and personality, it's amazing. I've been playing it at parties and when I've Djed since it was released, I love it.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 04:05 (twenty years ago)

i played it last night for the first time in a little while. i like it but something about the production always bothered me, most of the songs sound like low-quality mp3s

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 11 November 2004 05:03 (twenty years ago)

yeah, it never slows down. Every single song has at least one just completely insane line or hook - there's always something new popping out at me in his rhymes. And it runs a broad emotional gamut - sad, horny, angry, paranoid, funny, sappy. He's the king.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 11 November 2004 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Does it make me some kind of curmudgeon if I say I get bored with the nonstop onslaught of "nigga," "bitch," "fuck," "pussy," and "shit." It's just lazy, Ghostface can do better. Sometimes it's funny but after awhile it gets tired. There are some great rhymes and loops and beats and hooks here but still.

steve-k, Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:15 (twenty years ago)

"Does it make me some kind of curmudgeon "

yes. yes it does.

seriously tho, I think his vocabulary's a bit more expansive than that. Certainly more extensive than a lot of other rappers.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm sorry he's not using the queen's english. The language really doesn't bother me.

The only things that really bother my erm "liberal sensibilites" is the rather overt anti-feminism of "Tooken Back" and some random line where he says he's against abortion.

But obviously this doesn't really get in the way (too much) of my enjoyment of the album. But I find the criticism of his LANGUAGE to be a much more bleeding-heart sentiment - "his use of language bothers me" rather than paying attention to what he's saying - in terms of content "message" OR just pure aesthetics of his language (and many times w/ ghostface it is about purely aesthetic quality of his lyrics rather than some sort of overriding erm "message" althouogh that's not a generalization I would subscribe to for the record).

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 11 November 2004 19:29 (twenty years ago)

"I wish my favorite rappers were more PC!!!"

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Thursday, 11 November 2004 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Well obv. Spearhead > Ghostface, duh

MC Transmaniacon (natepatrin), Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:32 (twenty years ago)

hahaha

I don't mind gettin a little PC on musicians if they're being totally hateful ("Fie pon dem batty boy!" etc.), but I don't get that sense from Ghost at all.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 11 November 2004 22:44 (twenty years ago)

hardly anything Ghostface says on the album is worthy of getting 'offended' or 'bothered' over. really, Pretty Toney is all about the sonics to me - most of the time *what* he says passes me by, but *how* he says it is fucking compelling.

this is exactly how I felt about much of The College Dropout for three months, actually, then finally I started listening properly to the lyrics, and they were brilliant too! so it's all good.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 12 November 2004 10:02 (twenty years ago)

"I wish my favorite rappers were more PC!!!"

That's not exactly what I'm saying. I am listening to Ghost and Lil' Jon and dancehall and whomever rather than Spearhead because of the sonics, but I do long for Funky Four Plus One and whomever rap records where they could flow without using the same words over and over and over again. It's not creative. I kinda do long for the pre-Schooly D, pre-NWA days where you didn't hear those same words again and again and again.

Also, I'm a father of a 10 year-old and I'd like to have more cds I could play in front of him. I understand the whole Lenny Bruce and George Carlin thing about how they're just words that people choose to give meaning to, but on the other other hand I don't think at his age he needs to have to make such determinations.

steve-k, Friday, 12 November 2004 14:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and I'm not suggesting that Ghost is being totally hateful. Also, please don't tell me to just listen to Will Smith(didn't he give an interview where he said he doesn't curse on his cds)!!!

steve-k, Friday, 12 November 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago)

If Ghost was more pc he'd have a better chance of getting that crossover support in Pazz & Jop and cd sales!!! He might even get some of that media ink the Beastie Boys get...Oh well, he's got the ILM massive...

steve-k, Friday, 12 November 2004 16:07 (twenty years ago)

It's not even a pc thing. His schtick is just so OLD. The record sounds great, he sounds great but the whole stance is so over. No one raps about that shit anymore.

danh (danh), Friday, 12 November 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago)

It's like he finished this record, figured he nailed what he'd been trying to do the last few years, looked around and said "what?" Meanwhile everyone else is singing about politics. Personal and otherwise.

danh (danh), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:32 (twenty years ago)

politics is big in hip-hop now? That's news to me. Apart from that Jadakiss "Why" single and that disastrous Eminem "Mosh" song I can't think of any...

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 12 November 2004 17:36 (twenty years ago)

No one is rapping like this?

Shakey OTM re politics.

I don't know which rap cds are top selling this year. The top critically-acclaimed rap cds for the year seem to be Ghostface, Madvillian, Devin the Dude, and Kanye West. Where do they fit in, schtick-wise? I'm just asking. You folks may know more than I do on this.

I think Ghostface's "old" schtick is part of his appeal(despite my mixed take on him).

steve-k, Friday, 12 November 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

I'd say Devin and Kanye's records are both political. How can you say the College Dropout isn't? Devin the Dude's is personal politics from start to finish in the " totality of interrelationships in a particular area of life involving power, authority, or influence, and capable of manipulation" use of the word. Posturing is almost silly now. Especially coming from a sensitive dude like Ghostface.

danh (danh), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I just think its weird that there's two guys on this thread arguing on the one hand that Ghost's schtick is too OLD, and on the other that his schtick isn't old school ENOUGH.

are we all listening to the same record? Subject-matter wise he doesn't seem behind the times at all - so he raps about sex, broken relationships, being chased by the police, being a badass rapper, etc. Are these topics somehow relegated to a specific period? They seem pretty broad and relevant to me.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 12 November 2004 17:48 (twenty years ago)

maybe, but uh... Kanye postures like a motherfucker. (haven't heard the Devin the Dude record)

x-post

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 12 November 2004 17:50 (twenty years ago)

And, Pretty Toney's posturing isn't like his old schtick. It's harder, which makes the more infrequent jumps to the sensitve Ghostface seem almost schizophrenic.

danh (danh), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:51 (twenty years ago)

as I said previously, I haven't listened to the lyrics all that carefully. but old-skool type topics would make sense, given the music.

for fuck's sake, schticks aren't good or bad! it's about whether you can still carry them off. Ghostface can.

xposts

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I like that backl and forth about him. So scratch that schizophrenic comment.

danh (danh), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I'm not saying shticks are good or bad, I just don't think he can pull it off anymore. It's a difference of opinion. I love the record musically. Lyrically I like others better.

danh (danh), Friday, 12 November 2004 17:56 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

Wait, why isn't there a bunch of posts here going "Wow, Trife's verse on 'Biscuits' is 10/10 would bump five times in close succession"

Coyote Ultra Nate (The stickman from the hilarious xkcd comics), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

Because Trife's verses are average at best and he has the voice of a muppet villain.

brightscreamer, Thursday, 19 February 2009 02:05 (sixteen years ago)

I don't really know what's up with "Run" because most versions on mixtapes and stuff are just Ghost and Kiss, but yeah the video/official version has Comp, who's from Baltimore and is a recent Def Jam signing

― Al (sitcom), Tuesday, April 6, 2004 8:46 PM

lol def jam :(

eman, Thursday, 19 February 2009 02:12 (sixteen years ago)

they used the original version for the album tho so all good

brightscreamer offtm

ABC-DISNEY-PITCHFORK (The Reverend), Thursday, 19 February 2009 02:42 (sixteen years ago)

Word up Reverend. Trife da God is tight. Surprisingly, so is Ghost's son Sun God (He's on that joint that samples "Family Affair" on Fishscale and a couple other GFK traxx)

DJ Mr. Face Stabba, M.D. (Whitey on the Moon), Thursday, 19 February 2009 03:36 (sixteen years ago)

Don't get me wrong--he's good at what he does, but his subject matter is very limited. I can't see him rapping about being underwater with Ghost. Yes, that's a bad thing.

And I'm OTM about Jim Henson having his hand up Trife's ass.

brightscreamer, Thursday, 19 February 2009 04:16 (sixteen years ago)
