make the ultimate Teutonica cassette...

The problem is that a lot of essential Krautrock pieces are very very very long, & hence not conducive to mix-taping.

But I'd say you can start with Can's "Mushroom," Amon Duul II's "Archangels Thunderbird," Faust's "J'ai Mal Aux Dents," and Neu!'s "Für Immer," for sure. Does Slapp Happy's "Casablanca Moon" count?

All the more, long songs make mix tapes easier, if you can fit the song lengths in the right way...

Add either side of the first Ash Ra Tempel album.... Any song from Kraftwerk's "Kraftwerk 1" or "Kraftwerk 2".

For Krautrock bordering on proto-industrial rock, certain tracks from Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft's "Ein Produkt Der.." or "Die Klienen Und Die Bosen" will work too. Or hell, "Der Mussolini".

well, it is an *imaginary* tape, so go nuts.

fritz, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

whatever else is on it, Neu!'s "Hallogallo"'s gotta start it off....

*eyes the topic title warily*

Didn't we just have a thread about obscurantism?

kraut is possibly outdated slang loosely meaning 'german'. 'rock' refers to rock n roll. combined, these reference the german rock scene of the nineteen seventies, characterized by such bands as kraftwerk, neu, and can, all of which have been mentioned so far. c30, c60, and c90 are types of cassette tapes, devices onto which allow you to magnetically record music. the numbers refer to the number of minutes on each tape. the object is to 'mix' a number of 'krautrock' tracks onto a 'tape' that are representative of the genre.

I don't know but whatever it is it must have loads of Cluster. Jesus, those guys are gods.

"Mother Sky". It'll fit on a tape if you cut it off halfway through. "In Trance", Scorpions

an empty tape would suffice. kraut rockers influenced a lot of stuff i love but all of the originals were lame. just like the velvet underground influenced many bands i also love but the original was crap. all of the people who continually tell me that neu were oh so much better than stereolab are silly.

keith, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the vu were the best band that ever existed, apart from faust that is, and both will always shit on stereolab. there's my piece of ridiculous opinionated rant to sit next to yours (I actually think Sound-Dust is the best album released this year, btw)

keith you should have posted that to my thread, you fucking mentalist you.

Okay, I'm a bit dodgy with track-length's so maybe not exactly 90 minutes.

Space Side:

1. Sehr Kosmisch - Harmonia

2. Leb Wohl - Neu!

3. Rubycon part 1 - Tangerine Dream (okay they don't rock ;)

4. Future Days - Can

Motorik Side

1. Hallo Gallo - Neu!

2. Autobahn - Kraftwerk

3. Chain Reaction/Quantum Physics - Can

something like that.

Omar, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Throw in Hollywood by Cluster and,for some nice motorik,Monza by Harmonia.

side A: Falco: rock me amadeus Jean Michel Jarre: Equinoxe bit 4 (1st one on side 2 - or maybe the whole of side two) Status quo: 25th anniversary JAM version of rockin' all over the world side B: CAN: "i want more" cos their early stuff is so boring you obscurant snobs Kraftwerk/ Organisation: "milk rock" because it reminds me of the butthole surfers locust abortion technician. not that i'd ever listen to this track it's quite annoying i'd probably fast forward through it Kraftwerk: showroom dummies. you can dance like a showroom dummy to this track. nothing by tortoise cos they aren't german and they bore me senseless (why do i have all their albums??) Faust: the "chip fat buddha" bit off the faust tapes. the only good thing they ever recorded apart from "rien" (apparently it's not cool to like that - like i care!
