Dictaphones that use vinyl/acetate disks?

I've heard that some noize labels have dug up dictaphone type recording things that let you cut records of dubious quality but high collectable value.

I know about lathe cut records and obv. I can't afford that.

The one above looks like the basis for the 'record your voice' machines in the sixties and earlier. I have one record of me singing "I can sing a rainbow" from when I was six. I have two other discs of 'Beatles Fans' singing "Yellow Submarine" and saying hello to their friends.

mark, any ideas for brand names of these i can google?

Lil' Fancy Pants (ex machina), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, where would one get media for these?

Lil' Fancy Pants (ex machina), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

http://home.comcast.net/~cassetto/

Also, looks like the media is pretty pricey but is audiophile shit.

LilFP, the 'singles' have the word "Impact" on them.

By all means google, but I tried about a year ago, and got nowhere. But with the stuff you have got, you already ahead of me.

i saw kid koala use one of these recently.

the assman 640

he said they used it for one of the tracks on the Deltron 3030 album (The Assman 640 Speaks).

Isn't that the sort of thing Holger Czukay used?

at the emile berliner museum of radio & television here in montreal (it's actually just a big room, basically), they have this one device from the '30s, a huge home vinyl recorder. it's awesome.

peter king's lathe cutter (the cassetto site) is the basis of a whole musical existence in new zealand. that one little machine has given life to several thousand album releases that have formed a big part of our lo-fi/indie scene..

chris andrews (fraew), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

oh and king actually uses some other kind of acetate - its not strictly vinyl at all, which is bad because the sound quality is average at best, and good coz he makes amazing clear vinyl designs and whatnot and its really affordable for low run productions (20-100 copy issues are common).

chris andrews (fraew), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

he's started to get a bit out of his depth though, the popularity of his cheap and cheerful and short run discs now mean there's a 2 to 4 month waiting list..

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i recently got a lovely copy of suka's first ep in the mail from records records auction, one of the highest quality peter king releases i've heard.. esp. compared to the barnard star 7"s, which sound like fuzz warmed up..

chris andrews (fraew), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
does anyone know if the blanks are compatible between brands? I think some of the machines used pregrooved discs....?

TRON FIGHTS FOR THE USERS (ex machina), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 00:27 (twenty-one years ago)

pre-grooved? how would that work?!

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

there are partial grooves at constant depth to guide the cutting thingee which then digs into them deeper

TRON FIGHTS FOR THE USERS (ex machina), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

ahh that makes sense

the surface noise made by people (electricsound), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

DUDES IT IS HERE

now just to figure out how to make blanks, etc!
