all i've heard is the verse on "Run", which is straight fiyaaah: 'can't go to jail my mother cooking chicken for dinner"

what else should i be clocking for?

never scared, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the only thing i know him from other than run is the mixtape track with cam'ron. it's not that great. 'factory is nice but i gotta get the rims with it / i hit the car dealer at 7 o'clock / so by 7:45 i got a 745 / and all my whips from the years to come / you hate, you lookin at a 6, i'm test drivin an 8 / i got money, i don't need to get along with ya / every chick i'm with look like she stepped out of a prom picture.'

nine months pass...
late on this obviously, but Comp is a Baltimore rapper who was maybe gonna blow up but then..where is he now??

anyway, the new "guy from Baltimore who is supposed to blow up" is Bossman. His "Law & Order" album is out now and it's actually pretty good from what I've heard so far. Anyone else heard it?

eman (eman), Sunday, 6 February 2005 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Al's been covering him for a minute now on govt names.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Sunday, 6 February 2005 04:40 (twenty years ago)

yeah, what he said. I just reviewed the Bossman album like yesterday:

http://governmentnames.blogspot.com/2005/02/bossman-law-order-double-down.html

it's really good, get it. also, I interviewed Comp last year:

http://governmentnames.blogspot.com/2004/11/government-names-exclusive-interview.html

I think people are counting Comp out just because he's been signed for so long but hasn't made any real noise yet, but that's how big labels are, especially Def Jam. like Joe Budden, he was signed for like 2 years before he got a serious mixtape buzz and a big single (ok, bad example, but you know what I mean). but from what he told me, Comp is just starting to get serious meetings with L.A. Reid in the first quarter. hopefully he can get out of label purgatory and get some shine this year.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 6 February 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

the Bossman cover looks nice. so he's from Cherry Hill? there must be two Cherry Hills because the one I know of is south of the city across the Patapsco, not northeast.

good to hear Comp is still in it. Def Jam is notorious for that shit (Tical 0?). Are you gonna interview Bossman?

eman (eman), Sunday, 6 February 2005 07:24 (twenty years ago)

oh, and I thought it was lame how Comp got edited off Pretty Toney.

eman (eman), Sunday, 6 February 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

Cherry Hill as in the part of the city is referring to Cherry Hill Road, as opposed to Cherry Hill, Maryland. as far as I know. I've been talking to Bossman's producer, hopefully an interview will happen soon.

where you from, eman?

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 6 February 2005 08:08 (twenty years ago)

yeah cherry hill rd is in south baltimore aka brooklyn, md across the river. it confused me cuz he says in 'oh': "Greenmount, old York, whole Northeast, take it all the way down to Biddle Street, you know the whole down the hill click" which is like from waverly on down past north ave, far away from cherry hill. i'm in waverly.

eman (eman), Sunday, 6 February 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

"Harder" was one of my favorite rap songs of last year. He's got a mixtape out now.

JoB (JoB), Sunday, 6 February 2005 12:47 (twenty years ago)

CHARM CITY SUICIDES

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 6 February 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

haha I saw Charm City Suicides once! and I think I know someone who's in Mike Apichella's new band Human Host.

but yeah, eman, you probably know the geography better than me. even when I know where I am in the city, I don't really know what's south and what's north, besides the obvious parts. I think in that part of the song he's just naming parts of the whole city though, not just places in relation to where he's repping.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 6 February 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

Just curious: Does any local music get on HBO's The Wire?

I recognize Baltimore actors on that from the local theater I go to when I'm there, Center Stage:
http://www.citypaper.com/arts/story.asp?id=9529

Pete Scholtes, Sunday, 6 February 2005 22:57 (twenty years ago)

I haven't gotten to see a lot of The Wire, so I don't really know, but I've heard that Baltimore club music has popped up in the show from time to time.

Skarr Akbar is a really good local MC who's had a recurring role on the show. Michael K. Williams (who plays Omar) did drops on a Bossman mixtape and seems to know a lot of other MCs around here. and there's an article in the current issue of Scratch about Idris Elba (who plays Stringer Bell), who apparently is also a producer and a DJ.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

i didn't even know what this thread was about. i just want every baltimore thread to be about house trax apparently.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

haha it's okay, man. Comp is a rapper's name but it's pretty easy to see how that can be mistaken for the truncation of 'compilation'. if i'd caught the thread the first time around I would've said something.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

it's kind of messed up, I listen to club music probably 5-7 nights a week but I hardly ever know the names of tracks or who made what. I'm working on this list of the weirdest/funniest samples in Bmore club, Scott, I should run it by you to see if you can ID the tracks/producers.

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 6 February 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Just curious: Does any local music get on HBO's The Wire?

DJ Technics has had some tracks used in the show recently. I think he even has an e.p. out called "In The Wire." There also a party scene in the series The Corner that features Miss Tony's "Get Ya Guns Out" (been trying to find a mix cd with this track). I keep meaning to use these blank tapes I have to record some 92Q mixes.

Al, thanks for the info. where are you in Bmore?

eman (eman), Monday, 7 February 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to school in Baltimore County right now but my family lives in Fells Point.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 7 February 2005 00:52 (twenty years ago)

i love that miss tony track. he died, didn't he? i think i have it on a cd somewhere.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 7 February 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

hey scott, do you have a specific bmore club mixtape you'd recommend? Or are pretty much any of the ones on technic's site good?

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 7 February 2005 01:02 (twenty years ago)

i would go with technics. he's got a ton of stuff up for sale. i am, sad to say, way out of the loop since moving to massachusetts from philly. Philly was my hook-up for Baltimore trax. I hardly ever buy stuff on-line. I should when I have the money though.

Yeah, there is even an RIP thing for Tony on the Wire board:

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 7 February 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

a lot of my favorite mix-CDs are really old now. I still listen to them a lot though. And all my vinyl. I've got a bunch of great vinyl comps and singles. I need to catch up though.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 7 February 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

i miss philly :(

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 7 February 2005 01:13 (twenty years ago)

go eagles!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 7 February 2005 01:14 (twenty years ago)

i used to have a K-Swift mix cd that was decent. i like hearing it over the radio better though, with the dj yelling and shit.

eman (eman), Monday, 7 February 2005 01:21 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I'm the same way. I only have a few 12"s, no mixes, I feel like, why buy club music if I can listen to the radio every night and hear something new? I'm moving this year, though, so I'm definitely gonna stock up before I leave.

man, I haven't looked at the DJ Technics site in a while, I've been linking it forever but didn't realize they actually have content besides a guestbook now. I didn't know he did "Don't Make Me Kill" (w/ the 8Ball & MJG sample), that's easily my favorite club track of the past year.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 7 February 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

i've got an easy question for scott or whoever - what's the track with the sample of a shotgun cocking and firing used in the rhythm? it always amazes me when i hear it.

eman (eman), Monday, 7 February 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

that's "Don't Make Me Kill" too isn't it? well, that's one of at least a couple recent tracks with gunshot rhythms.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 7 February 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Have you guys gone to a club that plays that stuff? I can only imagine...

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

not really. mostly I hear it on the radio, and I've been at some concerts and local events where they spin it. those clubs have dress codes, though, I'd probably have to really get my gear together just to get in, and I don't have any friends that what would wanna go with me.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

what Al said. dress codes and high covers keep me away. some friends and I were driving around once listening to 92Q live from hammerjacks (a retarded club otherwise) so we tried to go there. the security was way too tight, and then we learned it was 18+ so no alcohol was being served so we did an about face. they also broadcast alot from club choices too.

eman (eman), Monday, 7 February 2005 03:59 (twenty years ago)

they also broadcast alot from club choices too.

"also... too." nice grammar there.

eman (eman), Monday, 7 February 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

You guys should go together ;)
