Tough. Dizzee's the better MC, and is more original all-around. But Dizzee got Wiley to guest; Kanye got Hov.

Ok: Dizzee.

Dizzee's production is sloppy and unfocused, but addictive and creative. Dizzee has a nice flow and manages to take to a varied amount of subject matter while always being entertaining.

Kanye has an instantly likeable, recognizable style, uses original masters for nearly unprecedented polish and isn't really a solid rapper, who tends to say stupid shit throughout his album. Such as:

"Sent me a picture with her feelin' on Candice
Who said her favorite rapper was the late great Francis
W-H-I-T, it's gettin' late, mami, your screensaver say Tweet
So you got to call me"

The Francis was already forced as shit. But then, he doesn't even really complete the reference. And tell me how he knows what HER screensaver looks like?

"Pullin' up in the Lexuses, one on both hand
So I guess them GSes was ambidextrous"

If you had a car on both hands (which is suspect already), that would make YOU ambidextrous, not the cars.

I like both, but I mean, this argument is retarded either way.

Producer: Kanye
Emcee: Dizzee

Dizzee.

This should tell you how much I like Kanye West.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so uncool. Nobody likes my thread.

But Matt and Rollie CHEATED by refusing to pick one.

Kanye. He's done loads of hot beats for other people, plus a great solo album. And while he's not as good a rapper technically or as compelling a persona as Dizzee, his content is more original and his indie-meets mainstream thing is more significant in the grand scheme of hip-hop.

Even though the two of them aren't really equivalent at all (Kanye is most known for his OUTSIDE productions whereas Dizzee has to my knowledge never produced anyone else's records) Dizzee's the easy pick. Kanye's a pretty good producer of other folk's stuff, but if he wasn't a wiz-kid producer I couldn't really imagine anyone else giving him a second on their records (let alone a deal of his own) whereas if Dizzee couldn't rap he'd probably still produce good tracks (instrumental or for other folks.)

The two halves of this statement are not actually opposed!

just saying, Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I considered it pretty obvious that even if Dizzee didn't produce his own stuff he would still have a record deal (and appear on Bassment Jaxx records that he's not producing, etc.)

Dizzee Rascal is the new The Streets - all I can do is shake
my head, wonder why, and shuffle back to Saneland.

This is a v. odd comparison...

I mean how can you compare these two completely different rap styles?
Dizzee isn't part of the same tradition of rapping...he would have different influences filtered through different cultural perspectives.

Btw, Rollie - that seems like a goofy criticism of Kanye to me! I mean part of what's endearing about him is his lyrical ... goofiness. His lyrical faux pas.

I enjoy listening to Kanye more. And at THIS point I have a hard time seeing Dizzee having as much of an impact on hip-hop...although he certainly deserves to. And who knows where grime will go from here...

Don't you mean sameland?

I like kanye west, but I find that I really like his tunes the most the first time I hear them. They are so polished, transparent and open, that although I fall in love with them instantly, it is an easy infatuation and one that does not last.
Dizee is harder to like, and more rewarding as he requires far more participation from the listner. I disagree that Dizee is sloppy, His sound is clearly quite unrefined, yet I think that is the nature when one is attempting to make music that is both emotionally gutteral and intalectually obtuce.
And as for Kanye being a better MC, Lukas, you have a good name but you are clearly quite insane.

Dizzee at night, Kanye in the day.
