on the cinematic orchestra thread i just said i liked their album better than sketches of spain. this is actually true but part of me feeling that is the universal desire to be oh-so-shocking and anti-canonist. and so this is the thread where you go against popularly accepted wisdom to say what you really like and fuck with the classics and maybe make people think a little in the process or whatever the fuck. (popular wisdom can mean whatever you want it to. including ilm, of course)

ethan, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

like: Queen, Abba and lounge
dislike: REM, Minutemen and Bob Dylan

dleone, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Another way to do this is to phrase it like Ethan's statement:

I like [band considered uncool] more than [canonical band everyone agrees is cool].

This works best if there is some similarity between the bands.

As in, "I like Lynyrd Skynyrd more than the Stooges" (which is true for me.)

Mark, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the anti-canon stance is more-or-less the ILE canon, non? this is, after all, the group that (by default) agreed on nothing but "All the Young Dudes" in the "find a song that everybody on ILE likes" thread a few months back (and it was promptly vetoed). The Velvet Underground is the only canonized group that I can't recall being bashed here.

fritz, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

mark's got it. and i made preparations for the ilm stance thing in my question, if you'd FUCKING READ IT. i can think of a million canonized bands that get a (mostly) free pass on ilm, what about public enemy or the smiths or the pixies or mbv or the beach boys? if someone said 'i like the coup more than public enemy' i'd stand up and fuckin listen.

ethan, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Isn't Anything is a much, much better record than Loveless, which may be the most overrated record of all time. And neither is as good as the first AR Kane record.

I don't know if that's anti-canonical or not. I'm new around here.

dan, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

just watch out for raggett...

i said in my blog a few days ago that i like the birthday party more than the stooges. i like "miss e" more than "what's going on?" chances are i like any band with a slint influence more than slint themselves (if i ever liked any band with a slint influence in the first place.) i like otis redding's (or cat power's for chrissakes) version of "satisfaction" better than the stones. i like juvenile more than de la soul, krs-1, common, nas, biggie (and on and on and on...) i love happy hardcore and i hate most detroit techno. shall i go on?

jess, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jesus, ethan, it was just a friendly observation (based on having READ THE FUCKING POST, specifically your point on popular wisdom = ILM). what's with the attitude?

fritz, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i shout at everyone, it means i like you. anyway i thought the point was clearly phrased, if you think ilm is always going against popular wisdom you can go against t at popular wisdom, it's YOUR STANDARD.

ethan, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

't at' = that

ethan, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Like: Sade, Pet Shop Boys, Pebbles.

Dislike: Ryan Adams, the Rolling Stones, Neil Young.

Yes, this means I esteem _Stronger Than Pride_ above _Tonight's the Night_.

Shoot me now.

Douglas, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the Wedding Present did more interesting things with their guitars than MBV did with theirs.

I also think - lyrics entirely aside - that Bob Dylan is a better vocalist than Liz Fraser. And I think Abba were a better band than Joy Division.

Tom, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i shout at everyone, it means i like you.

Unsubtle hint -- have you ever considered it doesn't come across that way?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

unsubtle hint - how come you only make your little snarky comments at the shouty asshole regulars who don't have tits?

ethan, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like LL Cool J more than Public Enemy.

I like Roxette more than Abba. I don't really listen to Roxette though. Actually I like most things more than I like Abba, though I'm not going to make some silly comparison between them and Joy Division. I will, however, compare them unfavourably to New Order.

I don't see anything really special about Britney Spears. I think I preferred Paula Abdul.

Every CCR song I've heard sounds identical and is as boring as the last. They can group-grope the Band for all I care. I generally hate 'tasteful' classic rock that people with 'good taste' listen to. I only like classic rock that is based on masculine posturing, empty virtuosity, and half-baked chemically-inspired hippie romanticism. This does not mean that I like all classic rock that fits this description.

I like Jimmy Page a lot more than Jimi Hendrix.

sundar subramanian, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i know i said i was looking for anti-canon and all that but dear god, jimmy page? you've crossed the line.

ethan, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dolly Parton is my favorite female vocalist of the last 20 yrs . Peroid

anthonyeaston, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

how come you only make your little snarky comments at the shouty asshole regulars who don't have tits?

Silly boy. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thesis, Antithesis... I WANT MY SYNTHESIS, DAMMIT!

Clarke B., Friday, 26 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Motown was better than Stax, which was just a bunch of down-home grunting. Stax fans always point to the 'integrated nature' of their label - i.e., trailer trash playing cartoon 'soulful' riffs, because they weren't good enough to be straight country. (Ask Rufus Thomas what he thought of Steve Cropper, who went on to be in the Blues Brothers, which is Stax's only legacy, unless Springsteen/Dave Marsh- rock counts. Wow.) And if Motown was a 'factory', makes for better music than a community-outreach project. How many Motown songs are remembered today versus how many Stax? I rest my case, and at least the crash brought Otis Redding relief from the bowel condition that caused him to howl in pain all the time. (What kind of dullard takes a song called "Try a Little Tenderness" and sings it like the drill sergeant in 'Full Metal Jacket'?)

dave q, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anybody born in North America who claims to understand the Smiths is either trying to get laid or is an insufferable passive-aggressive spineless fashion victim who wishes they were still 13 years old. We were all listening to Def Leppard while you were getting beat up by your dad for wearing your mother's clothes, and even worse, trying to defend it.

dave q, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am not a fashion victim. (Tip: Drag queen castrati who play feather-light synth-glam-metal might not be the best example to make your point here.)

David Bowie made a good studio album with a great producer. He also had some catchy singles. Period. Arguments for his greatness usually end up going more into his fashion sense than his music.

Ultimately I'm still not convinced Weezer is that big a deal. If I bought a Matthew Sweet or Lemonheads album it would probably have some catchy songs on it too.

sundar subramanian, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's a damn good thing you added that *if* there, sundar. ;)

jess, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Anybody born in North America who claims to understand the Smiths is either trying to get laid or is an insufferable passive-aggressive spineless fashion victim who wishes they were still 13 years old."

More milk, Kitty? All you need to understand the Smiths, wherever you are, is gaydar, a social conscience, the desire to get out of the shuithole you were born in, the inability to speak about anything other than that shithole once you DO leave, and a fairly comprehensive knowledge of post-war British film. As for the fashion part, only 5% of their fans have any style whatsofuckingever.

suzy, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Foxy Brown better than Lil' Kim. Hold on, no I don't. Shit, this game is hard.

dave q, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Sham 69 better than the Pistols, Alice Cooper over the NY Dolls, Stone Temple Pilots better than Drive Like Jehu, Schooly-D over KRS-One, CW McCall better than Gram Parsons, and I think Cheech & Chong's "Beaners" is better than anything Santana ever did. Speaking of California, X is the worst band to ever be envinylated, gimme Jane's Addiction, Faith No More, even Journey.

dave q, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Cat Stevens better than Nick Drake. I like Haysi Fantayzee better than Scritti Politti.

And dave q. I love you for hating X as much as I do. Living in Los Angeles only makes it worse.

Re Smiths fans: Color me spineless and insufferable.

Arthur, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love you for hating X as much as I do.

Don't hate them per se, but can do without the worship and the band's generally snotty view of music that isn't exactly like their own.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"This is supposed to be the new world." Oh, boo hoo, they play Duran Duran on the radio not you, poor babies. Hate them.

And Exene's contempt for anyone who doesn't fit into her cozy beatnik Beyond Baroque Class of '77 worldview = dudududdudududdududududdududududud.

Arthur, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like X better than Black Flag.
I like snarky comments better than shouty comments.
I like the Rheostatics way more than the Beach Boys.
I like acoustic music more than electronic music, generally.
I like Frankie better than Elvis.
Sometimes I feel like a nut, but sometimes I don't.

Sean Carruthers, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NO FUCKING PROBLEM THEN, ETHAN

fritz, Saturday, 27 October 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yeah, I like Elton John better than Rod Stewart. Stewart - introduced the 'Loaded' ethos to pop, as well as respect for one's elders and complete lack of taste and intelligence. And who's influenced by Stewart? Oasis, Tesla, Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi etc. You could tell his heart was really in things like "Dirty Weekend" and "Attractive Female Wanted", but he had to go and do stupid old grunting soul swill. Not only that, but his unpleasant, Cro-Magnon boys' club also destroyed the Who and the Stones. "But Stewart at least sounds better". Does he really, now? What would you rather be subjected to under torture, "Philadelphia Freedom" or "Hot Legs" ('keeps my pencil sharp', ha ha ha). Yeah, diamond geezer, fuck right off.

dave q, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...and that goes for anything involving mandolins, football, blonde supermodels, boater hats, pub ceilidhs, Sam Cooke, hanging out with the lads, and anybody who claims to be from North London but is actually in Zone 3. The Kinks narrowly make it under the wire of acceptability for me.

dave q, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Neil Young - who the hell can stand this turd of a man? Really.

The Beach Boys - much as I love Pet Sounds and parts of the early seventies albums, the bad bits are so TOTALLY dreadful (and so frequent) that sometimes I think the joke's on us, and the BB's should be considered, as they were for much of the late 70's and 80's, as beyond the pale.

Dr. C, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did I say 'Pistols'? Shit, I meant 'Clash'. Also, Burton Cummings was better than Jim Morrison

dave q, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like ben folds over stephen merrit .

anthonyeaston, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh me too.

ethan, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Flock of Seagulls are considered a joke these days. I'll tell you what the joke is, the joke is how this wonderful, fun, colourful band have been totally overlooked in favour of inferior early 80s bands like Culture Club, ABC and Heaven 17. Unbelievable, not one of these bands came close to producing anything approaching the soaring majesty of 'Wishing' or 'I Ran'. Superb songs, two of the very best songs of the early 80s.
A proper Pop Star pop band whose outlandish, parent-baiting TOTP appearences made for essential viewing. And let's not kid ourselves anymore, their haircuts were FANTASTIC!

DavidM, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I prefer Melanie to Kirstin Hersh. I'd much rather listen to the Poppy Family than Richard & Linda Thompson. I like Queen more than Led Zeppelin. I didn't used to, but now I do. I think Joe South is much more talented than Tim Buckley. I think Andrew WK's "Party Hard" is better than Pulp's "Party Hard".

Actually, the last statement is a lie. I do think the Andrew WK record is really fun, though.

Arthur, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Neil Young - who the hell can stand this turd of a man? Really."

Amen!! A STINKY OLD TURD THAT REALLY SHOULD HAVE DRIED UP BY NOW oops aorry for the caps

I am getting sick of all the Dylan 60th birthday/new album cocksuckingbrownosing too ... fuck, I'd rather hear Donovan over Dylan since they used to be compared earlier even though I've never really heard Donovan before. oh fuck the "make them comparable" rule - I'd rather listen to barbra streisand than dylan. ok thats a lie, but only sort of

I like Offspring so much better than Wire or X or etc, etc. I hate living in Los Angeles and not being able to like an album called "los angeles," how fucking frustrating. I like los angeles better than new york because i'm here so naturally it's better, isn't it

i like amnesiac much better than boring ok computer if i had to pick radiohead albums, surfer rosa better than doolittle, boys for pele better than little earthquakes, tidal better than when the pawn.. i like the aaliyah album better than the strokes album, its so not the best album of the year so shut up. i like "alt-hip-hop" if there is such a thing better than alt-country since i hate alt-country, i hate ryan adams and i think he should be shot in the pelvis repeatedly just for his new album (which has been getting too much attention) 's cover of him standing there in some cutesy pose in a stupid t-shirt, american flag and jeans, stupid picture what a stupid fuck. i hate term papers

i like just coming to music message board sites and typing shit rather than going through that whole fucking process of introducing yourself and expecting people to slowly get to know you over a period of few months as you warm up to their little clique and become familiar with you and become your e-friends - fuck that, i dont care about making e-friends anymore if its going to take so long. i've invaded this hideout die little vermin die MUAHAHAHAHAHHHAHA

Vic, Sunday, 28 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

don't let me kill the threa this time fucking SAY SOMETHING someone

vic, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I prefer to Doug Yule to John Cale. I also prefer Billy Yule to Mo Tucker.

Not surprisingly Loaded is my fave VU album.

Vic - you're on the money about Ryan Adams/alt-country etc etc.

Dr. C, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've invaded this hideout die little vermin die MUAHAHAHAHAHHHAHA

Stick around, Vic. I think we could use you in these here parts.

Jeff, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Oasis more than I like the Beatles. But then I like Oasis more than I like just about anyone.

Andrew Williams, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Beach Boys are way better and way more influential than the Beatles.

Fuck it thats not that weird is it.

I like Woody Guthrie more than Hank Williams. I like Merle Haggard more than Johnny Cash.

I think Limp Bizkit are the new Public Enemy. Ahem.

Britney is the new Patsy Kline.

Adam Ricketts is the new David Bowie.

Er I've lost track of myself now.

Ronan, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like The Telescopes more than, uh, anyone.

It's a little weird that people will accept that I don't like The Beatles fairly easily, and also that I do like The 'Scopes, but if it was to cross their minds that, uh, hang on, this means I actually think that The Telescopes are better than The Beatles, they'd be astounded.

Perhaps this is because people are a bit thick, hmmm...

emil.y, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

emil.y has just hit the nail on the head. Other bands I think are better than the Beatles - the TVPs (ironically), the Strokes, Felt and Pavement.

Andrew Williams, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like silence better than rap music of any sort...

g, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

emil: yeah, the telescopes were pretty good, did you like the unisex album?

g, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like ILM better than ILE. I like dave Q better than rainy. I like L.A. Guns better than Guns & Roses. I like Boston better than Chicago. I like Styx better than the Stones. I like Brandy better than Bread. I like Sham 69 better than the sex pistols. I like The Smashing Pumpkins better than Blonde Redhead. I like Yatsura's first album better than Pavement's first. I like Slint's first album better than their second.

Sterling Clover, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll take Frankie Goes To Hollywood over The Smiths, Lush's "Ladykillers" over anything by My Bloody Valentine and possibly every shoegazing band ever, Silver Convention and Santa Esmeralda over Prodigy and Basement Jaxx, the Pointer Sisters over Destiny's Child, Macy Gray over Kelis, Gamble & Huff over Timbaland, 1910 Fruitgum Company over N'Sync, Coolio over Dr Dre, the English Beat over the Birthday Party, and the Vibrators over Magazine.

Patrick, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah Patrick I was thinking of that one too: Frankie over The Smiths :) Obvious choice.

Omar, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This is a silly thread.

DG, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like Lloyd Cole a hell of a lot more than Edwyn Collins, Roddy Frame or Paddy MacAloon - all of whom sound dull and feeble next to Lloyd.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm convinced: ABBA are as good as Joy Division. But who utilised the fascist/aryan imagery better?

DavidM, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like nine inch nails more then the Smiths and Cure combined. I like Dre over Timbaland. I like Ryan Adams over Uncle Tupelo. Iike soda over beer. I like Jon Spencer over John Lee Hooker. I like Roswell over Twin Peaks. I like the Wall over Meddle or Piper. I like the Stones more then the Beatles. I Iike Autechre more then Aphex. I like Aliens more then Alien. I like the Joshua Tree more then Unforgettable Fire. I like the Diamondbacks over the Yankees in 5.

bnw, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the Psychedelic Furs more than the Sex Pistols, Echo and the Bunnymen, Nirvana, Radiohead, or almost any band that's around today.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like [band considered uncool] more than [canonical band everyone agrees is cool]. I like [Green Day] more than [Oasis]. I like [Elastica] more than [Pavement]. I like [The Cure] more than [Morrissey's Solo Career]. I like [Sinead O'Connor] more than [The Cranberries].

Lord Custos, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I feel like a maverick for loving the Beatles here. No, worse yet, a pervert for loving the Beatles on ILM, but i love this thread, as it's a quick overview on how human everyone is, and there's a lot less self-doubt now.

i like virtually anything inspired by the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson, but for the most part, cannot stand the Beach Boys.

It's harder to think of anything permanent felt about contemporary music.

badger, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

overheard at party: "i got the new strokes record. yeah. i like it, sue me."

I think Dwight Yoakam is better than Steve Earle.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, very clever, Lord Custos. You have adequately summarised the stated point of the thread. Care to perhaps contribute to it now?

Tom, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think I agree with everybody here!

Kris, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sheik Yerbouti is better than either Freak Out! and We're Only In It for the Money. Soul Asylum was better than Husker Du. Slowdive was better than MBV. The Kinks were preferable to any other British Invasion band (except the Stones). Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff are preferable to Stravinsky. Though Brian Eno's solo albums are leagues above Bryan Ferry's, Mr. Eno never did anything as great as Mr. Ferry's covers of "It's a Hard Rain," "The In Crowd," or "These Foolish Things." And Alice in Chains was the best Seattle band (which says everything that needs to about the quality of Seattle-ness).

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And Human League was better than New Order. Matter of fact, New Order is the one of the most overrated groups of all time, bar none.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yeah, Cradle of Filth is by far the best black metal act precisely because they take neither themselves nor black/death metal cliches seriously (unlike certain church-burning neo-Nazi Norwegian chuckleheads). I mean, wouldn't you prefer to have either Marilyn Manson or Alice Cooper as yer next-door neighbor instead of G.G. Allin or Wesley Willis?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Megadeth's "Hidden Treasures" is a better cover album than Tori Amos' new one. I like the Avalanches more than Kid Koala (although KK is still pretty cool). I like the Beatnuts better than Jurassic 5, and DJ Honda better than any of the former members of the Invisible Skratch Piklz. Breeder's "Cannonball" is better than anything Frank Black has done post-Pixies. Buck 65 is better than the rest of Anticon who are not as good as the Roots who are not nearly as good as Outkast (admit it!).

Dan I., Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tadeusz (or anyone else)--what does Bryan Ferry say at the beginning of his cover of "Sympathy for the Devil"? It sounds like he's saying "Zayboh!" Or maybe it's "Say woe!" I've never been able to figure it out.

Arthur, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like the beatnuts more than everything mentioned in this thread.

ethan, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i prefer julie london to lotte lenya

anthony, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Treefingers is the best song on Kid A.The last part of David Gilmour's solo piece on Ummagumma isn't bad at all.I like Mansun.

Damian, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I would rather listen to one song by the Stockholm Monsters or the Wake over anything by Joy Division, New Order and Happy Mondays.

I think that the Teardrop Explodes were getting better before they split up and think that "Everybody wants to shag..." (the 'unreleased' third album) is a damn fine record, even though the original bootleg mix is better than the released version.

I prefer "Isn't anything" to "Loveless", and agree with whoever said that "69" is better than both. And "i" is great too. And so were Butterfly Child and Papa Sprain, but who cares about them anymore?

I actually rather liked Primal Scream's mid 80s stuff, you know.

Everything on Sarah Records is brilliant except for Heavenly. (Which might explain the above).

I prefer the This Mortal Coil versions to the originals, more often than not.

(Can you tell I grew up in the 80s yet?)

Oh, there'll be more but I'm pressed for time.

Rob M, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Give Out But Don't Give Up' is better than 'XTRMNTR'

dave q, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rob, totally agree with you re: This Mortal Coil and their cover versions... and I *almost* agree about the Sarah Records thing, though I'd say the band that stand out for me as ruining that label were the Field Mice. Compared to the Orchids, Sea Urchins, Heavenly, etc, they were twee-by-numbers.

Andrew Williams, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This Mortal Coil - despite boring filler on the last two albums, Rob is right.

Stockholm Monsters - on the whole no, but I know what you mean. Staggeringly great band, for the most part (Fairy Tale excepted). At the moment though I'm pretending that they never existed, as my continuing failure to get hold of a copy of 'Alma Mater' is driving me nuts!

The Wake - 'An Immaculate Conception' is one of the best trax on Factory and up there with JD/NO. The rest, I don't think much of. It's OK.

Dr. C, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think The Bats are better than The Byrds.

Andrew Williams, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A-ha are better than the Clash

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pet Shop Boys piss over the Chemical Brothers and Primal Scream.

Hey, this IS fun! Why have i not noticed this thread til now?

Alan Trewartha, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry for being snotty a few posts above, by the way.

Tom, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thanks Tom for deleting the asterisk next to my blog in the nylpm linklist.

I hate canons as I am an agnostic. But still I prefer Velvet Underground to The Strokes, The Beatles to Oasis and Joy Division to New Order. I prefer Bob Dylan to Van Morrison. I prefer Prince to Michael Jackson. And Janet Jackson to Whitney Houston. No surprises here. And actually I think I prefer Abba to Roxette. But there I am not so sure. I never listen to any of those two except when forced to. I prefer the Spice Girls disbanded.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like faithless'es REVERENCE better than peanut butter. I like ugly duckling better than full-fat philadelphia. I like rammstein better than kiwi-milkshake. and the smiths/morrissey is the biggest fucking- "nasal whine"-whingy-self-indulgent-egotistic-unstylish-wanker of an arsehole ever. with shit lyrics, shit music and shit dancing. oh, and shit hair.

D@n Brist0w, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like a lot of Kraftwerk stuff but "Trans Europe Express" is shite..Boooooooooooring!........It's da truth, Ruth!!

Michael Bourke, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was drunk when I said that but its still true...Bob Dylan sucks ass to...

Michael Bourke, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Stax is better than Motown. But Gamble/Huff were better than either of those outfits, and more influential.

Ummagumma was one of PF's best albums. Roger Waters was a poor man's Frank Zappa (which, as I've said before, I mean as a compliment). And, speaking about FZ, he got better after he dumped the original Mothers of Invention.

M.C. Ren should have been as big as Dre. His stuff on Straight Outta Compton was better than Eazy-E's.

I also prefer Slint's first record. I like Tortoise. A Flock of Seagull's music is preferable to New Order (the guy from A Flock is now bald and looks like a Lynyrd Skynyrd roadie, BTW). Elton John is better than Rod Stewart. And I don't know what the hell Bryan Ferry is saying at the beginning of his cover of "Sympathy for the Devil" (sorry, Arthur).

All 20th century music will be forgotten within the next couple of weeks.

"Yes, very clever, Lord Custos. You have adequately summarised the stated point of the thread. Care to perhaps contribute to it now?" Uh...those *are* my contributions, Tom. I really do prefer Green Day to Oasis, etc... ...but I *do* see that the bands listed are sloppily matched. Lets try this again... I like [Green Day] more than [The Offspring]. I like [the La's] more than [Oasis]. I like [Garbage] more than [Elastica] I like [Elastica] more than [Ash] I like [Sonic Youth] more than [Pavement]. I like [The Cure] more than, um...[Morrissey's Solo Career]. I like [The Sundays] more than [The Cranberries]. I like [Sinead O'Connor] more than...um, [Mhaire Brennan]...

I like Ween better than The Beatles. This isn't to say I don't absolutely love The Beatles either. I just find Ween's music far more interesting and less often "ugh"-inspiring (possibly due to Ween's Paul-less-ness).

i think overload by the sugababes succeeds everywhere fool's gold by the stone roses fails

I just realized a list-of-my-favorite-rappers-as-opposed-to-my-least-favorite-rappers would be very appropriate here:

favs = Black Thought, Del, Common, Cee-Lo, Lyrics Born, Gift of Gab
least favs = Jay-Z, Missy Elliot, Eminem, Ja Rule, Ludacris
where my favs match up with the canon = Busta, Q-Tip, Dirty, Meth

Lorne Michaels is too old, and SNL needs to end immediately.

Cub, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i like [insert name here] more than Jim O'Rourke.

That felt good.

Aaron A., Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

nine months pass...
Oh man, this is gonna be sweet!

I like:

Diana Ross more than Aretha Franklin
Iron Butterfly > Thirteenth Floor Elevators
Days of Future Passed > Astral Weeks
Motown > Stax and >> all Philly soul except "TSOP"
Solo McCartney > Solo Lennon (And Yoko > Either of 'em!)
Van Halen > The Clash
Metal Machine Music > every other Lou Reed LP
Freddie Mercury > Morrissey
The Feelies > R.E.M.
Get The Knack > Radio City
Styx > Stereolab
"Afternoon Delight" > "Love Will Tear Us Apart"
Tea Party > 98% of all current English bands; and
Anything at all > reggae

Love this thread! Keep 'em comin...

(...and note that I don't necessarily DISLIKE all 14 of the inferiors)
