Jingoistic "Music" Being Played Loudly In Commercial Establishments: C or D?

So, I was in a Duane Reade (NYC area drugstore chain. Their stores are everywhere - like McDonald's. or pigeons ) near my home yesterday, standing in the checkout aisle just a-waitin' to pay when this insane - uhh- version of "United We Stand, Divided We Fall" (not sure of the title) comes on really loud over the store p.a. It was basically a few bars of the song followed by a spliced in Dubya delivering bits and pieces of wisdom to his fellow Americans followed by more of the song, then Dubya, ad nauseam. Some of us in line looked at each other in disbelief/disgust. I just put down what I was going to buy and split. Dear Abby, was I wrong to react so strongly?

No, I don't think you were wrong, but I'd suggest complaining to the manager before splitting.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I find that as offensive as all the flags and God Bless America bumper stickers everywhere. I KNOW what country I live in, and why should God bless America, and not other countries? I'd rather see a God Bless Earth bumper sticker, even though I'm an Atheist. It's just messed up to think that a god should favor our nation at the expense of another.

it is good that new york is not the rest of the country.

keith m (keithmcl), Thursday, 8 April 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, obviously.

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 8 April 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

In the bible Jesus says, "Blessed are the Americans, for they will inherit the earth," and in Genesis, "We the people created the heavens and the earth.".

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 8 April 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah it's a damn shame that NY is not the rest of country. We really would be better off if the guys with the funny white hoods were running everything.

Davlo (Davlo), Thursday, 8 April 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

this is why i only shop at indie drug stores

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope the flavor of sarcasm in my last post came through.

Davlo (Davlo), Thursday, 8 April 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I prefer the guys who hide the hoods at home.

djdee2005, Thursday, 8 April 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I have some Adidas ones I bought from Nordstrom Rack. They are nice.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 8 April 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Good hoodies are hard to find used for some reason.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 8 April 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i think its because people tend to wear them until they fall apart

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

it's easy to become attached to them

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 8 April 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"God Bless America? Grr, damn those stupid yokels.
How can they be so narrow-minded and stupid?! Boy am I glad
I live in New York."

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 8 April 2004 01:18 (twenty-one years ago)

You forgot your open < sanctimony > and close < /sanctimony > tags.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 8 April 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i've yet to see this in the uk, but i was in an airport newsagent recently and noticed that they would occasionally fade in some generic muzak for ten seconds or so, before fading it back to silence. what's with this? some sinister technique to keep shoppers awake and contented? i just got creeped out and left.

dan jonze, Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Woody Guthrie wrote "This Land Is Your Land" because of that Irving Berlin song, he didn't care for it either.

Of course I have to give credit to old Irv, he had some chutzpuh, just look at the endearing popularity of "White Christmas".

earlnash, Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

"White Christmas" is the only Christmas song I can stand (besides
a few hymns I enjoy for nostalgic reasons). I'm a bit of scrooge,
though. If Santa Claus was real I'd kick his arse.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Indie drug stores: classic or dud?

Well the one they did with Thom Yorke was ok :-P

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 8 April 2004 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice one. I didn't see that one coming.
A thread that mentions Drugstore is a thread worth reading.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

er, dud.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The best hoodie i've ever seen had iron-on letters on the back that read "Norwegian Hood." It was also on a really cute girl.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

What does drive me nuts about living in London is having to put up with commercial dance/r&b in nearly every shop in the city centre. It's inescapable.

mzui, Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that's true of most large cities in the UK and North America. It drives me nuts too. You can't even WALK by the Gap, let alone go into the store.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

"This Land Is Your Land" continues to be probably the only song about America that honestly makes me feel good about America.
