THIS is fucking genius...

Yes it is!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Now if only they'd actually make some music...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

some people have way too much time/hate on their hands.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Yea, well I'm not impressed, it's only luck that Princip had a clear shot at FF's entourage (because they took a backstreet diversion.) Now, what we really need is a band called The Schlieffen Plan!

mzui, Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Hate on their hands? Check the name of the web page.

btw, what's the e-bay link there attached to? (banned site)

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 8 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

will The Vichy Government do?

NB Ebay link goes to GP badges.

No, wrong war.

Now, what we really need is a band called The Schlieffen Plan!

That's what rock critics are executing when they mention Franz Ferdinand and the archduke in the same review.

Previously, it was thought Ludendorff & Hindenberg had good potential as a band name.

Now if someone was really on they could take song lyrics from the work of Wilfred Owen.

George Smith, Thursday, 8 April 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

That b-side from the "Take Me Out" single, "All for You Sophia," with it's chorus of "Bang Bang, Gavrilo Princip! / Bang Bang, shoot me Gavrilo!" is so excellent... maybe my fave FF track.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 8 April 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

They have Somme nerve!

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

They have Somme nerve!

Bravo! There's a memorial poppy in your name in Flanders.

George Smith, Thursday, 8 April 2004 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you. I couldn't have verdun it without you.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I cannot resist. Franz Ferdinand writes "Don't Forget (to Ypres Your Ass)" for the second album.

George Smith, Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only just found this thread...fame at last! (well, sort of)

Charlie, we're sorting out an official site as we speak...

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

You know you've got an NME feature as a 'given'...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

what's this all about?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That's the plan...I'm actually trying to acquire a washboard as we speak...

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

First press release:

BANG BANG! IT’S GAVRILO PRINCIP

“That’s how great art works – copy something great, fuck it up” – Alex Kapranos, Franz Ferdinand

“Art Brut? Art can’t get much more fucking brut than a bunch of people who can’t play their instruments massacring Franz Ferdinand songs!” – Fixit Girl, Gavrilo Princip

“I’m looking forward to seeing Gavrilo Princip. When’s your first rehearsal?” – Alex Kapranos, as before.

All hail the new wave of What Wave. Gavrilo Princip are here and they’re after you. Formed by Fixit Girl on one particularly boring Friday afternoon at work, Gavrilo have enjoyed a rapid rise to notoriety. They’re a twelve piece band, concerned with reinterpreting the songs of Franz Ferdinand for an alternative audience.

“But we’re not a tribute band,” puts in Fixit, sternly. “We’re an insult band. Etubirt, if you will. We hold the utmost respect for the individuals of Franz Ferdinand, but we reserve the right to subvert and alter their songs in whatever way we see fit. I mean, if we actually learned to play our instruments and delivered faithful renditions of the songs – where would be the fun in that? Like the bygone Gavrilo Princip, we massacre Franz Ferdinand in order to preserve both of our places in history.”

The twelve collaborators are:

Fixit Girl – washboard, spoons, kazoo and ukelele
Graham – harmonica, acoustic guitar
Duke – triangle and own trumpet
Stella – stompy-foot and merchandise
Melanie –banjo
The Count – drums
Marianne – backing vocals
Lissy – guitars, flute and designs on Nick McCarthy
Loraine – tambourine
Nargis – keyboards
Sophia – bugle
Mark –margarine tub with elastic bands over the top

On the 1st April, Gavrilo Princip released their first, self-titled album, containing such gems as ‘Cheating on Duke’ and ‘Make me Pout’ by dropping them within a multitude of helium balloons over Eastern Europe. The response from Europe has been overwhelmingly positive.

Gavrilo Princip are confirmed to play at the Reading Festival, although it is unclear as to whether this performance will take place on a stage, or in a campsite. For further information, please call Kate Connolly on ***** ****** or email: fortuneandglory@hotmail.com

i have a tambourine, now we only need to get the 12 of us together for a practice!

loraine ross, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

reinterpreting the songs of Franz Ferdinand for an alternative audience

the elderly?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Possibly, although I'd have thought our music wasn't really for the weak-hearted...

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice press release, except for the April 1st release date - bad call.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

is this ye olde schoolboy humour?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think so.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheers - the release date wasn't my idea. The first ever press release I've written, though. At the moment, we're split between members who take it all very seriously, and members who think it's all just a big joke but are happy to play along, and I'm kind of in the middle. "What, we've got T-shirts? OK then!"

We recently sold a set of three badges on Ebay for a tenner. A bloody bag of fifty only cost twelve quid!

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm surprised ff have allowed this to happen.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Judging by the fact its on their web pages...

KJC, you are being quite 'marissa' re the pricing of your badges. You realise you could be selling hundreds for £3 a pack...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they're very enthusiastic really. Their bassist has a badge. and there's not a lot they could do to stop us, in any case.

It's Camera Obscura who really despise us at the moment...

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-one years ago)

That sounds cool. Are you taking their support slots?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't understand about the badges, Mark, can you explain?

And it should be noted that the franzferdinand.org site isn't official - it's a fansite, albeit one fairly closely linked to the band.

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I know it's on their webpages--doesn't that mean they've allowed this to happen? I'm surprised.

camera obscura despise whom?

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

crosspost

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Give it a few months, Mark, and they'll be taking ours.

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Why, what've you done to Camera Obscura?

And send me some badges, damn your eyes...(mark is right, sell them for a reasonable price and fuck ebay, you'll shift tons to FF fans in any case)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"marissa" = pricing youself out of sales. I'm sort of serious / ironic here...

xpost, Chz4 got it...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

check out http://www.cafepress.com for this sort of thing...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Camera Obscura despise Gavrilo Princip. To cut a long story short, I walked into Avalanche in Glasgow (to the strains of 'Matinee', appropriately enough) with Loraine (tambourine) and Stuart (drums) and Stuart, who does know Gav from CO, began telling him the story of Gavrilo. I only overheard the words, "Franz Ferdinand messageboard" and saw the unimpressed expression on his face, but I think that's enough of a basis for an interband feud.

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlie, if I had badges, I would send you them. Our harmonica player is being ridiculously stingy! Stuart and Loraine have given all theirs to Sons and Daughters and Franz Ferdinand...

*I* should have bid for those damn badges!

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

things get sillier and sillier.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

.. in general?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, probably.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly, in Manchester things are getting seriouser and seriouser.

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 14 April 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

and alex got gived another one of mine last night...

loraine, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

quite simply, we're a bunch of sexy bastids and everyone wants a piece of our ass

our graham, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

graham speaks the truth as usual!

loraine, Wednesday, 14 April 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

mmmmmmm mcfly

our graham, Thursday, 15 April 2004 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Get out! Bloody harmonica players, who needs them..?

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Thursday, 15 April 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Alex Kapranos in this week's NME: "There's a Franz Ferdinand tribute band. They're called Gavrilo Princip, after the man who shot the original Franz Ferdinand. Their aim is to be bigger than us. Please mention them, they'd be so chuffed!"

He wore one of our badges on CD:UK the other week as well.

What a champ.

Kate Jane Connolly (fixitgirl), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I heared that the band "Franz Ferdinand" named themselves after a racehorse originally, then found out who the racehorse was named after.

Just wondered, is the racehorse still alive, or did it break its leg one sad day, and get put out of its misery by one Prince Gary Lo?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 21 April 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

There has never been a racehorse called Franz Ferdinand. There was Ferdinand, but no Franz Ferdinand.
