How should I spend my travel bonus bonus?

lucas (lucas), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

IPOD! dont think about it, just do it.

lukey (Lukey G), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"dont think about it?" wow.

most definitely think about battery life. think about the remote control. think about the fm tuner on the iriver. think about the price (iriver's $40 less on amazon). think about file format compatibility. think about whether you are buying something cuz everyone else has it or because you want the best product. hard to believe i'm saying that as an argument against an apple product, but to me the iriver makes sense.

i own neither and have been spec-ing them both out for a near term purchase myself. obviously, i'm leaning towards iriver.

jds, Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

OK cut the shit -- who are you working for

Nick Sylvester, Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I have one of the old (pre-dock) iPods and battery life has yet to be an issue after about 18 months. I leave it to charge for an hour or so every three days, and use it for about 2 to 3 hours a day.

The real selling point of the iPod is its user interface. Every button does what you would expect it to in the way you expect it to. I have something like 2,000 mp3 or aac files on mine and I can find anything in seconds. You can change volume, fast forward, pause/play or skip to the next track without changing the position of your hand or looking at the screen. In terms of form following function it's probably the best designed piece of electronics I can think of.

mmmsalt (Graeme), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like the way my iPod runs out after about 6 hours, or the way it loses its charge completely when left idle for a few days.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:53 (twenty-one years ago)

What the fuck is an iRiver?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It's like a river, but nothing like it.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 8 April 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I quite often play my discman for more than 8 hours in one trip, so iPod is effectively useless to me.

Nice one Apple.

mei (mei), Thursday, 8 April 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't had my ipod very long but i'm already irritated with the sketchy battery.
and furious with the rude customer service i received when having trouble with the software.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(those battery chargers might be useful to you, xpost)

dean! (deangulberry), Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had GREAT customer service, but the apple store on prince street treats you right. No clue about on the phone.

The battery is about six hours. If this is a problem, then get a hookup to 1)car cigarette lighter or 2)the plug in cable the goddamn thing comes with. I recharge every night. In eight months of ownership, the battery has died twice. Mods are easily available to add battery life if you're vaguely technically inclined.

Now what the fuck is an iRiver?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought I was having battery problems, but it turns out the iPod is just very, very sensitive to cold. Now that things are thawing out it runs its usual many hours. I only need to charge it every few days, with heavy usage.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 8 April 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

very mean.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 8 April 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

There are so many things to ask about that photo, but I'll start with the mug.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 8 April 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved my (2nd generation) ipod for the first year. 10 gb of music was great. But then it started flaking on me a little too much--a major disappointment considering I'd dropped $350 on it. I bought an iriver (w/ 256 mb of flash memory, $200) and the ipod has been collecting dust ever since.

Why? Because I like to listen to music when I run. Because occasionally, I like to switch over to the radio. Because occasionally I'll record a live performance off of the radio. Because one AA battery charge lasts three times as long as my 18 month old ipod battery and it doesn't lose that charge if I leave it sitting for a couple of days.

Iriver's user interface sucks completely and totally. That is the major drawback. It's also rather ugly looking compared to the ipod. I'm still a lot happier with it. I'd probably feel differently if I wanted to use it on long distance road trips and things of that nature where the song list capabilities of the ipod would matter. You also can't transfer music off of the iriver like you can with the ipod. If these things matter and you don't mind the potential battery issues, maybe the ipod is the right choice.

camanda, Friday, 9 April 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I Like my iPod
Even though the battery sucks
Just the fact that i can have 3000 songs in my pocket gives me a hard-on....i mean it...whatever

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Saturday, 10 April 2004 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
I bought an iRiver and only have one silly little problem.

After transferring MP3s to my player, tracks that should blend into each other have a tiny and rather annoying gap between them that shouldn't be there. Why is that? Is it just the software I'm using to rip MP3s (FreeRip)? Is there another way of transferring music other drag and drop?

Charles Dexter (Holey), Friday, 18 June 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The same happens with an iPod (and iTunes). It's a pain.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 18 June 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The upcoming Creative Zen Touch looks pretty neat.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 18 June 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

So, I'm just loading stuff onto my new iriver 40gig, it's good and the interface isn't that bad at all, in fact my only problem so far is that Winamp rips cds as palylists, so I load up the folders and then can't play them as they are not playlists grabbed from the iriver itself. Is it just a question of re-naming folder on the player or do I creat e new folders and load them up into those?

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the fact you need to ask a question like that explains why you should have bought an iPod :)

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 09:27 (twenty-one years ago)

ha, no ta. too much bad press.

and by the way, fytp

Porkpie (porkpie), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 09:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you're all buying into this shit!?

reo, Wednesday, 1 September 2004 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

(those battery chargers might be useful to you, xpost)
-- dean! (¢¼¢À¢...), April 8th, 2004.

I don't understand, are you saying there are portable battery chargers that charge up the iPod batteries from some other batteries?

If that's so then iPod pics woould look a lot more clunky if they included all this charging paraphenalia.

mei (mei), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Why could they just make the batteries twice the size, and thus usable, in the first place?

mei (mei), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

four months pass...
Had someone told me that irivers don't work with itunes and that I would have to download winamp (whose download site isn't working) in order to make playlists but still use itunes to burn cds as the free version of winamp is limited to 2x to get you to upgrade then I would have got an ipod. :(

Had someone also told me that consolidating my itunes library would have organised all my track by artist rather that playlist, meaning that I have to put compilations back together again in order to get them on to my iriver then not only woud I not have consolidated my playlist but I would also have bought an ipod as it was the thought that consolidating the libarary would mean I could just drag and drop the whole thing into the iriver was the cause of me doing so in the first place. :((

hmmm (hmmm), Sunday, 16 January 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck.

hmmm (hmmm), Sunday, 16 January 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't understand all the criticism of ipod batteries really. i get over 8 hours from my ipod battery, and i charge it almost every night. it hasn't schized out once in the 6 months i've had it and i use it *really* heavily (basically just have it on all day every day).

gem (trisk), Monday, 17 January 2005 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

How can you have it on all day if the batteries only last 8 hours?

Do you live on Mercury?

mei (mei), Monday, 17 January 2005 13:29 (twenty-one years ago)

So, Afer all that fucking about above I'm now figureing out how to get to grips with things. Theonly major problem now is that both my itunes folder and my my computer folder are being unbearably slow. It's taking, sometimes, 30 seconds to move between folders. This wasn;t happening before I connected my iriver and consolidated my itunes library. Please help as I am going a bit mad.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 17 January 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Is returning it and getting an iPod instead really not an option? Sorry I can't be of more use. I don't really understand. Anyone else?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 17 January 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

don't have i-tunes, do have an iriver + have no complaints. how about asking some of your questions in their users forum:

http://www.iriver.com/html/support/forum/sufr_index.asp

stevo (stevo), Monday, 17 January 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 17 January 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sure the battery problem is real, but i haven't had any problems either. i just got a new one, but my old one still get's about 6 hours of batter life per charge and it's about 3 years old.

shut up, Monday, 17 January 2005 19:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had GREAT customer service, but the apple store on prince street treats you right.

They better, after 3 hours in line.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 17 January 2005 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I would suggest visiting http://www.misticriver.net/ instead of the official site. And using http://foobar2000.org/ instead of itunes or winamp

todd (todd), Monday, 17 January 2005 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Some problems I have about buying an Ipod just yet.

1. The battery only charges 1500 times or something. I'm not going to drop $600 (I'd only get the 60 gig if I got one, I have way too much music for the 40), knowing itll only last a few years.
2. The warranty seems sketchy. It's only 1 year, and only free during the first 60 months (after that you have to pay for repairs) and only covers problems inherent in the ipod, not stuff like if you drop it. Considering almost all the electronic stuff Ive ever bought can get a full-coverage, that sounds weak.
3. I dont have/dont plan on ever owning a mac. And I am more comfortable, enjoy using Winamp a lot more than Itunes.

That said, I dont know why people are complaining about having to charge the battery on an Ipod. I charge my cell phone every night while I sleep. If you did that with your Ipod, and got 8 hours during the day, even 6, you'd be fine.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 17 January 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

6 months, not 60

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 17 January 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

anybody got a creative zen touch?, those things look niiiiiice - not to mention the sweet price and 24hr battery life..

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 17 January 2005 22:07 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Seriously, if you have £260 to spare and you want an mp3 player, get an iRiver H340.

You don't need iTunes or any special software at all as you can can just copy songs onto it through Windows Explorer. I'm assuming an iPod can do that.

The only complaint I had is that the charger I got has a European plug on rather than an English three-pin plug, but - as I later found out - you don't even need a separate charger as it'll recharge itself through your computer's USB ports when you sync it.

The FM radio is also pretty mighty as mine pick up dodgy London pirate stations crystal clear without any external aerial - and you can record them. If you upgrade it with the newer firmware, you can even watch videos on it.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 11 March 2005 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't decide between the two...I like ipod's interface, but I like
iriver's battery life b/c I'm lazy & have enough trouble remembering to
charge my phone. I'd probably only go with 20gb, but if i'm going to drop a wad of cash I want to make sure I get something decent.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 11 March 2005 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

The iRiver IFP-7xx series makes some incredible, incredible noises if you go into a subway, turn on the FM, and hit "record." I am going to upload some of the sounds it made soon, but wow.

I just got an H10 and now I have an iRiver family of two, fi you somehow still don't have a DAP, get iRiver over iPod. I can play videos on mine with third-party firmware!

three years pass...

Does anyone know what's going on with Iriver Europe? Their website isn't working and the H140 I recently sent for repair has recently been returned to sender, unrepaired. It looks like they have closed down but I can't find any info about this having happened. I've emailed their UK distributor and the contact listed on the U.S. website but have received nothing back.

Ultimately, where I'm going with this is as follows: where could I get an iriver H140 repaired?

Neil A.Simpson, Friday, 15 October 2010 11:06 (fifteen years ago)

So, it looks like their website has moved to www.iriver.at. Google doesn't seem to be aware of this for some reason.

Neil A.Simpson, Friday, 15 October 2010 11:10 (fifteen years ago)

repairing is an outdated and analog concept. replacing is the new repairing.

dayo, Friday, 15 October 2010 11:19 (fifteen years ago)

That may be, but they don't tend to make mp3 players onto which I can record full quality audio these days so I'm a little stuck. Plus, I like my chunky H140.
