R. Kelly-"Down Low Double Life"

I was listening to R. yesterday (which is such a great, ridiculous, decadent spectacle--which, of course, is R.'s trademark, but I still think he does smooth partytime best (see: Chocolate Factory) and was reminded how fantastic this song is. It's just a perfect example of everything R. Kelly is capable of and everything a huge ballad should be. And for a song about cheating, it's so self-pitying and solipsistic, but Kells pulls it off so well. So many perfect details--"I don't believe the shit I did the night we were at your mom's/I got a page from out of town, lied and said it was my job/
Grabbed my hat, coat, gloves and scar"..."All I know is uh, I was asleep, they came in/Woke me up pourin' hot grits/And all kinds of shit on me man, okay beatin' me and shit/Hittin' me with all sorts of type shit" and the fact the he just add the stuff about the kids in this bizare analogy: "Playin' Russian roulette/with hearts not to mention the kids (I'd love a book of weirdo R. Kelly analogies). Kelly goes completely full throttle with the big theatrical R+B slow jam, it's like some weird bootleg with Gilbert and Sullivan, Scott Walker and an MJ slow jam, but it sounds like NO ONE but Kelly.

Replace "MJ" with "Prince", Kelly is obviously much more Prince.

I've debated starting a thread about "What I Feel/Issues" before

Talk about it here!

The best part of "What I Feel/Issues" is "There's a hole in me/and it rocks my mind!"

And that GIGANTIC drum at the end

there's a million great parts, but for some reason the sound effects behind "lock and key" feel like my personal highlight. Any time you hear a door shut ON a song about a door being shut? KLASSSIK!

People who listen to music by paeds who piss on 14-yr-old girls should be shot. Not to mention that he's the tackiest crooner in the history of 'music'. What a cunt.

how do you REALLY feel?

Apparently like a bad case of VD, from his language.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 10 April 2004 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

there are two types of people in this world, 'larrys' and 'bonos'.

R Kelly is most definitely a Bono. Timofey is a fucking Larry.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 10 April 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Now I'm imagining Bono pissing on that damned white flag.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 10 April 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

That post is even weirder when you think about who wrote 'Pnin'

Sym (shmuel), Saturday, 10 April 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

or when you think about pnin himself! hahaha

s1ocki (slutsky), Sunday, 11 April 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

This song is just a warm-up for RK's ultimate epic, 'Showdown', on Chocolate Factory..
