R. Kelly - "Happy People"

single/title track from forthcoming album. a shameless retread of "Step In The Name Of Love", but I loved that one so much that I'll take the leftovers. surely the Pied Piper's most bizarre relationship is his continued struggle with present tense verbs, which always end with an 's' even when following plural nouns ("happy people keeps the world turnin'", etc.).

I like the little talking bit where he goes "uh huh, alright", it kinda reminds me of Stevie's awkward rap at the end of "Do I Do"

I thought it was a Step remix the first two times I heard it... Very pleasant nonetheless.

I really like it

OHhhhh!!! I probably heard this playing in a record store, and thought it was another remix version of "Step..."

It sounded like it was off a mixtape cuz I heard DJ Enuff's name mentioned, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Nice.

If his music gets any smoother it'll just be one long synth line and a clap drum with him humming one note a minor third above the synth.

It's not as good as "I'm Gonna Piss on You.

So you like pedophile music?

Yeah, I downloaded the disc this morning. So far, very good.

I also read his Wiki page. He's sort of a despicable person, apparently.

Happy People was massive in my house growing up. Getting emotional thinking about it. One of those great Kelly songs that has a genuine emotional depth to it.

Dwight Yorke, Sunday, 29 November 2009 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

KELLS QUESTION:

Trying to remember the name of one of his tracks, its one of the slow jam ones, i think he makes a reference to the war in Irag in it, i was convinced it was called something like 'we've made it', but im getting no luck with that.

Dwight Yorke, Monday, 30 November 2009 00:47 (fifteen years ago)

don't let me die?

ianmaxwell, Monday, 30 November 2009 01:27 (fifteen years ago)

ianmaxwell, Monday, 30 November 2009 01:29 (fifteen years ago)

untitled is pretty solid, save a few real egregious missteps

R. Kelly left his talents 'trapped in the closet'

Fans typically expect R. Kelly to deliver plenty of club beats and radio hits. His newest and ninth album release, the creatively titled "Untitled," falls short of this expectation, delivering an unsurprising compilation of highly-produced R&B ballads and club beats.

Featuring 15 tracks, Kelly collaborated with numerous artists on the album including OJ Da Juice Man, Tyrese, Keri Hilson, R. City and other various artists, to create his catchy R&B sound.

The album has a general theme of love including tracks such as "Whole Lotta Kisses," "Bangin' the Headboard," "Text Me" and "Pregnant," and has an overall romantic tone.

"Number One" is the single from the album featuring Hilson's wonderfully auto-tuned vocal talents. Though the track has a distinctly catchy backbeat, the song fails with an overabundance of produced elements such as the deeply spoken "this is number one" repetition and Kelly's over-sexualized singing of the chorus. The song, like much of the album, also fails lyrically as Kelly sings "And it's okay if you wanna brag/ The sex so good/ Go and pat yourself on the back and 'em haters/ They gon' hate but we just gon' keep blowing up."

The album features a generally slower tone, matching the lovemaking theme, but Kelly still provides plenty of room for club hits on tracks like "I Love the DJ" and "Crazy Night." R. City lends his talent on "Crazy Night," giving the song a reggae influence matching City's Virgin Island background.

Kelly ends his album with the piano-based ballads "Pregnant" and "Elsewhere," slowing down the beat base of the album's prior tracks. "Pregnant" features Tyrese, Robin Thicke and The-Dream, a chorus of "Girl, you make me wanna get you pregnant/ Lay your body down and get you pregnant," and nearly six minutes of Kelly crooning about his magic seed and the woman he would like to plant it in.

A compilation of uncomfortably sexual lyrics, beats and auto-tuned talent, this album will fit most expectations made on it and is fairly on par with his 2007 release "Double Up" and 2000's "TP-2.com." While Kelly may no longer be "trapped in the closet," it seems his talents may be.

"happy people/u saved me" has become my favorite album of his. "happy people" might even be the album I play the most when I want to feel good and cozy.
