So apparently The Cure are touring with Interpol and The Rapture this summer

It was in the Listen2This section of the latest Entertainment Weekly. Rob dubbed it "Curefest". This will hopefully be one of the greater events in my life.

Also, the new album's done; the sessions were split equally between near-metal, wistful dirges, happy pop songs, and "weird things", but they're only picking 10 out of the 20 they did, so it could turn out several completely different ways.

I'm sure Ned will now
a) commit suicide or
b) make a dorky joke about only going to half the show.

Sansai, Sunday, 11 April 2004 01:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I might actually go to that!

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Sunday, 11 April 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd go to half of that.

Xii (Xii), Sunday, 11 April 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh come on, the Cure are perfectly fine

Nate in ST.P (natedetritus), Sunday, 11 April 2004 02:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, Ned would certainly enjoy most of the show.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 11 April 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Although I thought Pixies were supposed to tour with the Cure. This is all very confyooossing.

donut bitch (donut), Sunday, 11 April 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

(Except for Interpol) THIS WOULD BE THE GREATEST SHOW EVER.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 11 April 2004 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, I like interpol, if this happened I think I would quit my job and follow the tour.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 11 April 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

the only time i saw the pixies was when they opened for the cure. it could be the atkins tour.

keith m (keithmcl), Sunday, 11 April 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't we all agreed that the Cure album will be crap but everyone will say it's great?

___ (___), Sunday, 11 April 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I love interpol and if Robert Smith gets to sing the Rapture's stuff than I would SO check this thing out.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 11 April 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

That's sort've like Robert Plant touring with Kingdom Come.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 11 April 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't we all agreed that the Cure album will be crap but everyone will say it's great?\

Um, NO.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Sunday, 11 April 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, NO.

No, no indeed.

(Except for Interpol) THIS WOULD BE THE GREATEST SHOW EVER.

Quite right. I'll have to wear extra thick earplugs and practice paintball target on ol' Interpol Cokehead upfront.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 April 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned, let's be pals!

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Sunday, 11 April 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Took you long enough.

Sansai, Sunday, 11 April 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, it did indeed take you long enough to make a dorky joke, right there in the first post of the thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 April 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Interpol's headlining right?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually that would be great! Then I really could leave early!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, if you were forced to take the Pepsi Challenge with that album I bet you'd love it. Like George Michael, you need to listen without prejudice volume one.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Alas for you, I've actually heard the album. And oh the boredom.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

you love the rats but you won't drink the rat's milk?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

But rats are warm and furry.

WHY MUST YOU TORMENT ME WITH YOUR WORDS, NED

Sansai, Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

20-minute live version, right? Woo!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 April 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Tenacious R!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 April 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 12 April 2004 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Heavens!

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 12 April 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Robert and Porl are talking double team SUPREME!

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 12 April 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Haven't we all agreed that the Cure album will be crap but everyone will say it's great?

Um, NO.

Oh, right. Well, it is about time we did then. The Cure album is going to be crap isn't it?

But because it has come out at a time when everyone has decided to love the Cure again, there'll be a big hype bubble of everyone saying they love it, despite it being crap.

Agreed?

___ (___), Monday, 12 April 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Just wait till GoF reform......

don, Monday, 12 April 2004 11:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The only Cure album I haven't liked is _Wild Mood Swings_, and even with that one I only dislike it when compared to other Cure albums (a few selected songs aside: FUCK YOU IN THE EAR, "MINT CAR"; oh no "Treasure", not you, stay and cuddle).

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 12 April 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

The new Cure album will very likely not be crap, unless you have absolutely no taste in music. There's a reason why they have the level of respect they do.

brandon, Saturday, 17 April 2004 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"There's a reason why they have the level of respect they do."

Because they stopped while they were ahead?

don (don), Saturday, 17 April 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, their last two albums were crap.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 17 April 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

How fat is Fat Bob these days, anyway?
Sorry, I was reminded by the picture. When I saw the Cure in 2000 I was sitting too far away to tell.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 17 April 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The new Cure album will very likely not be crap, unless you have absolutely no taste in music. There's a reason why they have the level of respect they do.

Yes - that being there work in the 1980's and possibly disintegration. So what they did 12+ years ago.

The Velvet Underground get a lot of respect too, but everyone will quit happily admit that their mid-nineties tour was absolutely shite.

Just because a band once were good, doesn't mean they take on some saintly position of safety. Get a grip.

___ (___), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I like that VU reunion live album. Lou Reed's vocals aren't very good, I don't think, but the playing is great.

Tim Ellison, Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Just because a band once were good, doesn't mean they take on some saintly position of safety. Get a grip.

Robert Smith and co. already know that their chins are beginning to droop, therefore they can't convincingly wear the mascara for much longer, either.

Should take the cash and run, while they can, and more power to them. Fuck knows there are mucho bands with less talent doing that their first CD out----much less their 20th (or whatever.)

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Saturday, 17 April 2004 17:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does it piss me off so much when people dismiss _Bloodflowers_? I mean, seriously, are you all deaf?

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 17 April 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Or do I just have magic ears? (I conceed that this is a strong possibility.)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 17 April 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

They are enchanted, and sparkle in the evening breeze. Like mine!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 17 April 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"Maybe Someday" is great, but I've never heard the rest of the album.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 17 April 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

it's worth your time, for real.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 17 April 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I found Bloodflowers more interesting than I thought I would when I finally heard it earlier this year, but I don't think it's THAT great. Definitely steps above Wild Mood Swings (and I LUHHHV "Mint Car," feh to all your magic ears).

"Magic Ears" is the phrase of the day, btw.

I R MORON FOR MISSING THESE SHOWS!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 1 August 2004 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

the cure are fucking fantastic, better than the other times i've seen them. people are in for a treat. just consider bringing a date instead of your best friend, because i'm sure your best friend is awesome but you can't grab him/her and sing pictures of you into his/her neck without (i'm assuming) considerable awkwardness. and trust me, that's what you're going to feel like doing.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 1 August 2004 05:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the cure are fucking fantastic, better than the other times i've seen them

Hmm! I'm still a bit worried because of the festival-selection nature of the length/song choices reported so far, but hmm!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 August 2004 06:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I keep reading this as "The CRUE are touring with Interpol...."

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Sunday, 1 August 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

everytime i've seen the cure it was dull-as-anything. and i am a fan.

doomie x, Sunday, 1 August 2004 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

agreed. this was a total surprise.

lauren (laurenp), Sunday, 1 August 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

'chain of flowers' doesn't have a setlist up yet!

i am still trying to shake off the memory of 'faith' from the last dreamtour show in 2000. the band could of folded up that night for the last time and i would have never wanted more. but these things do change. maybe the short set has more to do with the new heavier songs than anything

kephm, Monday, 2 August 2004 12:22 (twenty-one years ago)

anf they play Mass. saturday and i dont even have tickets yet! plenty of lawn tickets left, but, oh ebay be good to me

kephm, Monday, 2 August 2004 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

chicago? anyone?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 01:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish... the Mass show was good. nothing special in terms of the setlist (well they did 'going nowhere' as the final song), they started late again. the promise was intense and full of feedback and what a solo

kephm, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH I HATE BEING BROKE

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

did you not make it to mansfield?

kephm, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

AAAAAARGH

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorta surprised Dan is so restrained here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm just surprised

kephm, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

my gripe is my damn student loans keeping me from flying to chicago,la ,etc.

kephm, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I see they've started playing 'Forever' as a closer...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

they closed the mass show with "going nowhere". robert pulled out the 12string for it!!!!

kephm, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Why do you hate Dan so much to tease him this way?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i like dan, i like the cure more

kephm, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

An admirable dedication.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend spent the saturday night after the show playing poker with r.smith and won $82 off him (it's a strange chain of events). i was supposed to be there, damnit, but i had to back out at the last minute.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

you have friends in the rapture?
AAAAAAAAAAAGGGRGGRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

kephm, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i sort of imagined dan living carefree with a caddy in the driveway of his gated manor. this is very disillusioning.

|a|m|t|r|s|t| (amateurist), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

aforementioned friend isn't in a band, although she works in music.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

and yeah, that's got to be one of the biggest aaaaaaaaaaagh's of all time.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Did she remember to ask him to play 'Secrets' during the tour?

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

no, but she called him out for cheating during the game, which i thought was very ballsy.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I miiiiiight have an extra free ticket to the chicago show.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

no, but she called him out for cheating during the game, which i thought was very ballsy.

SHOCKAH. I'll never play cards with him!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

teeny -will you some pick me up first?

kephm, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Kephm, your excitement is impeding your grammar.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't make up my mind whether i want to go on thurs or not...i don't like that it starts at 5pm. free sounds pretty damn tempting though. is that ticket still available teeny?

tricky disco, Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Teeny: I wanted to, but I've got other plans now. :-(

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Robert Smith on CNN in a rather Spinal Tap-esque moment. "It's so good to see all the youth coming to our shows. It's such a marvel." It's nice to see fat bastards in stage make-up pumping out the same old numbers in sets approaching self-parody is universal in rock music. Heh. Good show.

James Slone (Freon Trotsky), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

does smith enjoy his makeup nowadays or is it sort of a pagliacci thing now?

|a|m|t|r|s|t| (amateurist), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

The lipstick didn't seem to be as thick as it has been in the past last night.

I caught all the 1st stage performers 'cept Mogwai last night. The Cure was powerful, man. Jumping around all goofy to "Disintegration" and singing/yelling along to the back to back "Just Like Heaven"/"Pictures of You" combo w/ friends were highlights.

Maciej Kasperowicz (Maciej), Friday, 13 August 2004 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

does smith enjoy his makeup nowadays or is it sort of a pagliacci thing now?

Smith said in SPIN recently that the Cure makes albums at their own pace now and that it might be another 8 years before they make a new one (Bloodflowers --> The Cure: 1996-2004). SPIN said, Will you still be wearing makeup in 2012? Smith said, I very much doubt it.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 13 August 2004 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

And... I missed the Chicago show. Poo.

Sansai, Saturday, 14 August 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Bloodflowers 2000, WMS 1996, Wish 1992.

kit brash (kit brash), Sunday, 15 August 2004 04:49 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry the extra ticket never materialized. Unfortunately chicago was probably one of the worst cure shows I've seen as far as song selection matching up with my personal tastes. Robert was sort of sweet and silly and they did a lot of sweet and silly songs, and it got sort of one-note after a while. I still enjoyed it, just not as much as I wanted to.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, well that makes it even more poo, I like the pop songs the best.

Sansai, Monday, 16 August 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

okay now that I revisit the set list it's not all that bad:

Lost, Plainsong, Labyrinth, Facsination Street, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, High, The End of the World, Anniversary, Lovesong, Inbetween Days, Just Like Heaven, Pictures of You, Closedown, Before Three, Disintegration, One Hundred Years, The Promise

Encore: Close To Me, The Lovecats, Why Can't I Be You, Boys Don't Cry

It was really great to hear songs like Plainsong and Closedown, which I don't think get played often, but I guess after hearing Disintegration and 100 Years, I was really revved up to hear a really intense encore, with like "Doubt" or something, and it was just soooo poppy. It was nice to hear Deep Green Sea kinda segue into High, I think they have the same weird-ass tuning.

teeny (teeny), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Woah, I would've been really happy with that. Maybe "Faith" instead of "The Promise".

Sansai, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

they did a lot of sweet and silly songs
Yeah, that encore is way too saccharine. The rest of the set looks good, though.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Do they actually play 'Doubt' these days? I ... ermmm ... doubt it, but it's good to see the odd album track from the Faith / Pornography era creeping back into the setlists now and again, I think they still play 'Strange Day', and last time I've seen them (Hyde Park '02) I heard 'Siamese Twins' live for the very first time...

thomas, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 08:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Do they actually play 'Doubt' these days?

They didn't even play "Doubt" on the tour for Faith -- it was the one song not played at all from that album.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

SF show last night was pretty great (well, main stage bands anyway, the second stage: starling, cooper temple clause, someone else, and cursive) were all awful. I really wish mogwai had played later in the night, either after interpol or at least after the sun went down although i guess it was cool to see them in daylight. they played two songs then my father my king for 20 minutes. Rapture were excellent and managed to move people who I think had probably never heard of them. I thought the interpol set was disappointing; I like them but they just can't really carry a stadium, they sound too small and look a bit silly with a light show, but the new songs sounded good (or better than the mono download I have). As for the Cure, this was as good as the other two times I'd seen them (Prayer and Wish tours....13 years ago!). They kept the new stuff to a minimum, three songs from Poronography, Shake Dog Shake, Plainsong and Disintegration, From the Edge...., all sounding excellent. The encore sucked though, they crammed all the pop songs in there (close to me, lovecats, let's go to bed, why can't I be you) and suddenly seemed like they should be in Vegas.

It was fucking cold out there by nighttime after a really hot day which partly messed with the enjoyment.
