two lone swordsmen - from the double gone chapel

o to the m to the g! what the hell is this? why on earth did they think this would be a good idea. they've almost earned one awful record because of all their shithot ones. but this is a nightmare. if you like them, you could do worse than not acknowledging this at all. AT ALL. there is an interesting (but shite, why, why, why?) cover of gun club's sex beat but the whole record is completely incoherent. Think an amalgamation of trans am, add n to x and death in vegas. The typical TLS sound is barely recognizable. I haven’t read any press for/about this record but I’m totally bemused by it. Messrs Weatherall and Tenniswood what are you thinking?

anyone out there like it?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Sunday, 11 April 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

was curious, but haven't heard it yet. Killer title though. "Sex Beat" is such an overdone cover!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 11 April 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

you listening to the right LP?

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Sunday, 11 April 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

well the single i heard sounded like mid-to-down-tempo 2LS, with the sort of vocals you'd hear in (yes) trans am or (especially) add n to x. it wasn't thrilling but it wasn't that terrible.

what i'm most surprised about is that you're surprised.

given that weatherall's spent the last few years carefully polishing his postpunk / northern electronics credentials ... i'm surprised he isn't doing much more overdone covers ("warm leatherette" or something)

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 11 April 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm only surprised because it sounds nothing like those artists at all to me.

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe i'm pushing it to say that the sound of this record is an amalgamation of those artists but i certainly get the same vibe from these tracks. (stack up - is particularly add n to x, the lurch particularly trans am) i guess i shouldn't be surprised but i am because i think it's an astonishingly bad record and i've previous always like their stuff.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Sunday, 11 April 2004 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Hail the Two Lone Swordsmen for making the BEST gothy rock album I've heard in ages. This is what the new Cure album would sound like if the world were right. Talk about a 360 degree change in sound, but still, I think it's awesome.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Saturday, 1 May 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah it's a great record. sure, it's a change of direction, but a damn fine one. "damp" is just incredible

rentboy (rentboy), Saturday, 1 May 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Sunday, 2 May 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Now that I've read the description of this, it sounds fantastic!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 2 May 2004 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sex Beat" is such an overdone cover!

really? i know enon have done it too but who else? in love this song so much that i'd like to hear some more covers of it. i think the tls version is pretty ok.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sure it's great. I am a habitual Weatherall booster, so I will probably never even admit it if this really is as bad as indicated above.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

in fact...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Just listening to this new offering. The tracks are really really good, but my first impression is that they're jumping on the whole disco-punk wagon a little late considering Weatherall's been dj-ing this kind of stuff for ages now. Personally I find the whole DFA thing pretty uninspiring but this style is just about starting to click with this album and the last album from !!!.
Can't really hear the Add N To (X) influence I must say. It just sounds like punk songs. I'd have been happier if they'd done one punk song just so they could say they had and then done something else for the rest. The Swordsmen have never really done a proper dub album yet have they? In a way all their stuff is dub but I'd like to hear TLS's take on reggae or dancehall.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the comparison to add n to x (i've only heard "faux", mind you) is more unavoidable than accurate - anybody singing through a vocoder over a bluesy midtempo electronic beat is going to remind people of add n to x.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the title, but not the sleeve. amazon said it was like haunted dancehall, but here it seems the complete opposite. i think i have always liked only a couple of tracks on each TLS record, but i have liked them a lot. perhaps i will get this, at the moment, people dont seem to be too positive about the record though

gareth (gareth), Friday, 14 May 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought Tiny Reminders was the best. It never got that much cred though.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 14 May 2004 09:38 (twenty-one years ago)

This sounds fantastic!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Friday, 14 May 2004 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i really don't like this. i loved tiny reminders but this is just a none starter

boomnoise, Friday, 14 May 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

is the single a give away to the overall sound ? cos i love Faux. lots. a whoile album of stuff that good would be a major good thing in my life right now ..

mark e (mark e), Friday, 14 May 2004 15:02 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
its been a couple of weeks... how do people feel? its coming out tommorow in the states and my store has it in stock and i am wondering if i should bother. i loved Stay Down, and havent heard anything else except Hypercity hehe.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Monday, 31 May 2004 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It's definitely not their best. It just sounds a bit sloppy and amateurish, style over substance - something the Swordsmen always managed to avoid. There's just something missing here - the textures, the stonedness, the layers and layers of underwater sludge - they've been replaced by irritating lyrics and a wannabe-trendy nonchalance. There's an arrogance here that has always existed within the Rotter's Golf Club scheme, but this time round it just pushes the boundaries of what I find acceptable.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 31 May 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, everytime someone mentions something sounding 'goth' Ned says something like this:

Now that I've read the description of this, it sounds fantastic!

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I know pretty much nothing about the Lone Swordsmen, but enjoy the single.

christhamrin (christhamrin), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
What's the consensus now?

adam. (nordicskilla), Sunday, 8 August 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

this and the swayzak record are so damn similar. slightly ambivalent about both.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Sunday, 8 August 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Aaron I think you should get "Tiny Reminders" first, prob.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 9 August 2004 07:58 (twenty-one years ago)

it's meh. not a patch on tiny reminders.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

"Tiny Reminders" is also I imagine much longer.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 9 August 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

this and the new swayzak record are both very good imho. there are a few clunkers on each, but generally they are both really solid. the swayzak one is so much better than their last. i like how "sloppy" from the double gone chapel sounds. great title, too.
