seeing as how santa claus is going straight to the ghetto and is avoiding N4, i'll have to get my own shit.

so, recommend me one record/CD each, that you think i personally might like (and not already own)

The Other People Place - Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe

Omar, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Passage "Seedy" (Cherry Red). A flawed retrospective of a great band, but their only music available on CD. You might like their mix of slightly primitive creepy synth n' layered percussion as an example of a new direction which could have been followed in the early 80's, but ultimately wasn't.

Dr. C, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark Hollis - Mark Hollis

David, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kompakt - Total 3. Everything Tim has said about it is true.

RickyT, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Discosis is great.

But I recommend Marah-The Kids in Philly.

Ronan, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Without knowing you or your tastes, I can, without remorse, recommend "The World As it Is Today", by Art Bears.

dleone, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Walkabouts, Satisfied Mind.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pluxus- Och Resan Fortsatter Har (And The Journey Continues Here)

emil.y, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ella Fitzgerald, _The Cole Porter Songbook_.

Douglas, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

RickyT beat me to the punch, so:

V/A - Lily of the Valley V/A - Ischemic Folks

(both on the Schematic label)

Tim, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Marc Gartman's The Horrible Cocoanut Grove Disaster. (http://www.pushpinmusic.com if that Amazon link doesn't work.) Great album.

Phil, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Plux Quba' - Nuno Canavarro.

Andrew L, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dymaxion - Dymaxion x 4 + 3 = 38:33. Oh, it's good stuff. For a sample, check out ILM Listening Chamber 12.

David Raposa, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not sure if you'd like it, but I must recommend it anyhow: Rheostatics' Night of the Shooting Stars.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, but I changed the linkage to Chamber #12. Click on this.

David Raposa, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Let you down" by the Kingsbury Manx. Let it dwell in your subconcious for a few plays then find yourself singing utterly baffling lyrics for the rest of your life, with gentle tunes with guitars and brushed drums and not even a hint of Starsailor-like crapness. It's what dark nights are made for.

Rob M, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

barbara morgenstern - vermona ET 6-1.

james, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Second the Kompakt recommendation, Gareth. If I like it I wouldn't be at all surprised that you did.

Josh, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sun Ra, The Magic City

M. Matos, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

please, don't stop the recommendations. i have already purchase some of the above. will report back on everyone suggestions in a week or so, which will give me time to get some more.

gareth, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Alright, here's another one : Andrew Weatherall's compilation "9 o'clock Drop".

Dr. C, Friday, 2 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Philistines Jr - 'Analog vs. Digital' or the countinuing struggle ep. Had to mention them again! :)

james, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Deerhoof : the man, the king, the girl CD i think it's on kill rock stars i don't know

bob snoom, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gareth should buy:

bubba sparxxx - dark days, bright nights..

augustus pablo - king tubby meets rockers uptown

xenakis - le legende d'eer.

(my soundtrack to fitful dreams last night. trying to listen to them this morning to decide if they actually mix as well together as my unconscious mind thought.)

jess, Saturday, 3 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two weeks pass...
thanks for the recommendations y'all

chaki, i already had the bodenstandig cd,

omar, thanks, i wasn't going to get the other people place, but i have now, and i am very impressed with it, although i wasn't to begin with

tim/josh/rickyt. i'm looking into the kompakt and schematic

emily, i have a different Pluxus album, and it is ok, in a Plone style, but not brilliant. is this better?

rob, i imagine the kingsbury manx to be a track and field/kings of convenience type thing, which i'm not sure i'd like. is it like that?

matos, sun ra's magic city, i looked at this in the shop and it was quite expensive, i came very close to buying it, could you tell me more

dr.c, this andy weatherall thing, it looks a bit early80sbritain, i'm not sure i'd like that, i'll try and listen to it in smallfish

jess, is this a good xenakis entryist CD?

gareth, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gareth, i dunno if anything exists such as a xenakis entry-point cd; he's a very bovversome greek, he is. (errr...was.) i would actually suggest "electronic music" which collects 5 or 6 (i dont haf it infront of me) shorter, slightly more "accessible" pieces (in the relative sense...on another thread i compared some of them to oval, et al.) d'eer is a 42 minute, unindexed noize composition, not exactly easy listening. if you can find it, you also might want to look out for persepolis.

jess, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Gareth - you WILL like it, betcha.
