Best and Worst Music Websites

Cuz I was having fun reading the magazines thread.
I know we've done best music websites, and POV etc.
I want best AND WORST here. ILX is exempt as usual.

That was my thread! You liked my thread!
On the websites: I don't know. Depends on what you're looking for.

Nowell, Friday, 1 October 2004 18:33 (twenty years ago) link

You know webzines: Pitchfork, Stylus etc.
Obviously there's no love lost for Pitchfork around these parts...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:39 (twenty years ago) link

i like www.markprindle.com and www.headheritage.com - neither is comprehensive enough, but i appreciate the writing and approach on both of them.

i like pitchfork for some stuff and i still use allmusic, even with the lamer interface. i guess those are the two i have the most complaint with, though.

ILM wins in a landslide.

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:44 (twenty years ago) link

Strangely, AMG is both.

briania (briania), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

Pitchfork?

Nowell, Friday, 1 October 2004 18:45 (twenty years ago) link

www.robertchristgau.com, if you like his thing.

southern lights (southern lights), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:47 (twenty years ago) link

Prindle is pretty cool, I've been reading him off and on for like 5 years

Nowell: http://pitchforkmedia.com/

AaronHz (AaronHz), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:49 (twenty years ago) link

Fluxblog, Music for Robots, AMG (despite the added slowness and irritation), etc.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:50 (twenty years ago) link

www.kexp.org, also. I'm sure the better, more thoughtful writers around here find their reviews to be overexuberant and uncritical, but that kind of mirrors my approach to music these days.

southern lights (southern lights), Friday, 1 October 2004 18:53 (twenty years ago) link

Wink when you pimp yrself, Dan!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

sorry I mistook this thread for a list rather than best/worst.

bill neil (inabillity), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:06 (twenty years ago) link

all of them are best tho'.

bill neil (inabillity), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:07 (twenty years ago) link

can't really say much for worst, cuz if I find one it goes outta sight, outta mind.

bill neil (inabillity), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:12 (twenty years ago) link

a) I don't believe in emoticons

b) I think it's obvious my tounge is firmly in cheek, if you visit said page!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:12 (twenty years ago) link

musicplasma seems interesting, but i cant figure out what to do.

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:17 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I guess I don't visit any sites that I could nominate as 'worst'. I do, however, think that this prog metal board , which I spent some time on in high school, is pretty damn amusing.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 1 October 2004 19:23 (twenty years ago) link

Don't know the worst, but these(as well as rockcritics.com, mentioned above) are pretty good: http:// Raised By Bees at www.herjazz.org/sara, and http:thefreelancementalists.blogspot.com/(wink)

don, Friday, 1 October 2004 19:38 (twenty years ago) link

god there's so many and I really don't want to offend anyone by exclusion.

Sara Sherr's probably my favorite frequently updated blog but there's plenty others I check. Cocaine Blunts is probably my favorite mp3 blog right now though the others are godly just for existence. Government Names is my favorite "collective" blog. The Original Soundtrack is my favorite blog that doesn't update a lot but when it does it's like KABOOM! in my brain.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:11 (twenty years ago) link

suppose I should give links: Sara's Raised By Bees!, Cocaine Blunts, Government Names, and The Original Soundtrack.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:14 (twenty years ago) link

Popjustice

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:16 (twenty years ago) link

oh and Robert Christgau is my favorite gigantic emporium of 30 years' worth of "holy shit, this is great" reviews. The Consumer Guide on there beats everything ever.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 1 October 2004 20:17 (twenty years ago) link

I fardled Sara Sherr's URL, but she's been mentioned a couple times since (not reading previous posts can be a good thing). However, just oout of respect: http://www.herjazz.org/sara Furious.com/perfect (Perfect Sound Forever) is a great reference (and fun) resource. Thewire.co.uk's archive too, incl. stuff they never printed, like long thing with Mark E. Smith holding forth on today's non-groovey scen.

Don, Friday, 1 October 2004 21:09 (twenty years ago) link

Prog Archives has been entertaining me for weeks, great coverage of non-UK/USA acts and loads of lovely mp3s.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 2 October 2004 12:09 (twenty years ago) link

best: www.playlouder.com
worst: www.robertchristgau.com

Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 3 October 2004 01:49 (twenty years ago) link

"a) I don't believe in emoticons"

:-(

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 3 October 2004 02:11 (twenty years ago) link

http://ihatemusic.bagatellen.com/

if you're a fan of the avant threads that usually sink out of sight within 3-10 posts here on ILM, this is a good website for you. those people really know their stuff. something much more artist-friendly about it too.

(Jon L), Sunday, 3 October 2004 02:32 (twenty years ago) link

Thanks for the props, Ant'ny. I don't know if my blog is technically, a real music site, since 90% of it is non-music stuff.

Sara Sherr, Sunday, 3 October 2004 21:21 (twenty years ago) link

check gabba, we've been running it for years and I don't know why...

nick.K (nick.K), Sunday, 3 October 2004 21:48 (twenty years ago) link

worst are the lyrics sites that obscure searches on google

nick.K (nick.K), Sunday, 3 October 2004 21:51 (twenty years ago) link

If Sara's doesn't count then I guess my favorite music blog is mine. Anthony Is Right. I'm kicking ass these days.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 3 October 2004 21:53 (twenty years ago) link

xpost

yeah, gabba's great. many anonymous net lurkers are glad you're still running it. first "mp3blog" i ever found.
all the "mp3blogs" are great. fluxblog, tofuhut, cocaine blunts, soulsides, bubblegum machine... wave of the future donchaknow.

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Sunday, 3 October 2004 21:55 (twenty years ago) link

thanks m0stley, [jk] and I met up last night to talk about the future of gabba, it looks like we're gonna carry on

nick.K (nick.K), Sunday, 3 October 2004 21:58 (twenty years ago) link

If gabba closed I would be very sad. Hey Nick did you get my last e-mail?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 3 October 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago) link

discogs is excellent.

And href="http://www.woebot.org">Woebot is back.

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 4 October 2004 01:46 (twenty years ago) link

I like Jessica Hopper's site, but it's kind of on the personal side too: http://tiny.abstractdynamics.org/

And I could care less about Pitchfork.

Sara Sherr, Monday, 4 October 2004 04:34 (twenty years ago) link

Strike my vote for my site and replace it with one for Punktum.

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 4 October 2004 19:31 (twenty years ago) link

Oh yes, I have her linked from my site too.

Sara Sherr, Monday, 4 October 2004 23:43 (twenty years ago) link

I love to be loved.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 October 2004 23:48 (twenty years ago) link

robertchristgau.com one of the most generous: thousands of Consumer Guide entries, as well as articles; good-to-great stuff, overall ('ware reliance on icons in some 90s GUIDE[book] entries, though).
