Stupid arguments

Right this very minute I am arguing with an associate of mine (the singing fellow from the band I left yesterday) via email as to whether the bloody Charlatans are any good or not, he say yes I say no. I never expected to have to argue about the 'Charlies' after about my 17th birthday, I would have thought everyone would have moved on. So, what dumb moosical arguments have you been having recently?

The implication in his argument is that I'm narrow-minded for not liking the Charlatans. Make of that what you will.

I have an eternal battle with the world and the earth about country music. No it doesnt sound like Garth Brooks, no I didnt borrow Emmylou Harris album off my mum. No No No No.

Also I can't resist arguments with those people who hate "dance music". It's made with machines blah blah blah. I mean I've no problem with someone not liking an entire genre, but they've got to admit it is narrow minded. So unless the Charlies are now a genre I think you're ok.

Friends and I had a raging one about Gary Numan a few weeks ago. 'No, really,' said Michael, 'you have to listen to Dance.' 'Why the fuck should I?' I replied. And on it went.

Daniel, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You should listen to Dance because it's a great album and because "Cry the Clock Said" is a terribly underrated song. Hurrah!

Setting aside ILM discussions, nearly all of which are far from stupid...hm. *thinks* Not sure. I think I've reached a point where those around me know not to try and convince me otherwise on musical opinions. ;-)

That's a horrible stage because you can't even open your mouth without friends getting paranoid. Somethings playing and I'm like "..." and then everyones all "here we go". Or I make fun of something genuinely funny in a video or something, and the person is like "well they're my tastes and thats what I like" when I wasn't even questioning them.

Ronan, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I was just amazed that my adversary would dare accuse me of being narrow-minded. I'll have to forward him the receipts of my past few internet purchases, I think.

DG, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey Ned, you should listen to Godspeed You Black Emperor!

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

of course yr not narrowminded for not liking the Charlatans, but in their defense let me say I think they are a pretty good singles band. They've never put out an album that blew me away, but they always have a few great or almost-great tunes on them, and the albums are pretty consistent, no real clunkers usually. Also I think they should get some props for never really jumping any musical bandwagons. Sure they were machester and then sorta britpop, but their sound hasn't actually changed all that much over the years, which may actually be a strike against them?...) Mind you I haven't heard their latest album yet. Anyway...

Hey Ned, you should listen to Godspeed You Black Emperor!

But I did, Sean, thus the problem. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you don't recognize their genius, Ned, you haven't listened to them enough! Ha! Ha!

Seriously, though, and on a tangent, I think that you're missing the point about Swans doing that first, because although you're right, Hafler Trio beat both of them to it.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The charlatans are like the Ramones ... they just do what they do well and try and deviate too much from that. What Charlies probably never envisaged was striking pop gold with tracks 'Just Lookin' and also growing up with their audience

I have to say everything the Charlie's have ever released has been total and utter pish, especially the stuff which rips off the Stones. However I heard their new single where tiny Tim tries to sound like Curtis Mayfield fronting the Bee Gees and I am converted, at least for the next couple of weeks.

I have this eternal argument with anyone accidently listening to Momus' Voyager CD:

"That's Pet Shop Boys, isn't it?"

No it isn't!

"But is it produced by Pet etc. etc.?"

I argue a lot with emo kids because I find their attitude insufferable-their music-nazing isn't compatible with mine-but they love me anyway.

Maria, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hafler Trio beat both of them to it.

I really should get more Hafler Trio. I like Rapoon...
