Is the "new" Velvet Underground live CD (in Kansas City I think) a good CD?

If not what Velvet Underground CDs would you recommend?

Franz Kafka (Franz), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I love you.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"White Light/White Heat"'s pretty good

Mr Mime (Andrew Thames), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"I love you" is on the "Fully" Loaded CD.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

has anyone heard it? the double-disc live at Max's thing?

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Who is Max, and why does he live in KC?

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno about a re-issue but an album was released in 1972 called 'The Velvet Underground Live At Max's Kansa City' (that being the name of a club in NYC.) Sort of the first official bootleg, recoded on a cassette recorder by Brigid Polk, a friend of the band.

Reed/Morrison/Yule/Yule. The version of New Age is the bollocks. I like the record, despite/because of the camp talking over the music about fetching drinks & in-gossip.

Mooro (Mooro), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Rhino press release.

Mooro (Mooro), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno about a re-issue

You do too know about a re-issue, you just posted a link about it.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:52 (twenty-one years ago)

:D

Only because I googled after the first post I sent.

Mooro (Mooro), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:54 (twenty-one years ago)

you are tricky, Mooro. Veeeeery tricky.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 16 April 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Sheesh, a 2CD edition of this thing? I'll take a pass.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 16 April 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll take a piss.

And while pissing, I'll think about how I hope I someday find a used copy of this for, oh, 4 bucks.

spittle (spittle), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

"And while pissing, I'll think about how I hope I someday find a used copy of this for, oh, 4 bucks"

Or not even bother. There are plenty of better live recordings of the Velvet Underground.

Tim Ellison, Friday, 16 April 2004 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

but this is the only one where you can hear Jim Carroll ordering a Pernod!

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 April 2004 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

He's also talking about pills at one point, if I remember correctly.

Tim Ellison, Friday, 16 April 2004 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The "Live '69" discs are amazing. The version "What Goes On" is one of my favorite Velvet's songs.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Skip the Max's recording unless you're a completist. Invest in other bootlegs instead. Get the Quine tapes. Get slsk working on the problem for you.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 17 April 2004 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I read the Max's Kansas City had real bad sound quality. True? The official Live '69 version of "New Age" rocks my world. Why why why didn't Lou sing it on Loaded? That's got to be one of my fave VU songs ever. "Waiting for the phone to ring..." Oh how sweet that song is. I actually didn't get much out of Volume II of the '69 live thing, but I did like some of the Quine tapes...especially "Follow The Leader" - that's an example of a really long song that I don't mind the length of. Come to think of it...is there a Volume II Quine tapes I missed somehow? My CD says Volume I.

bimble (bimble), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Spencer, you are right about the version of "What Goes On"! My friend was DJ'ing in a small bar and played that and both I and another friend of mine were absolutely floored! That's what made me get the CD.

bimble (bimble), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:06 (twenty-one years ago)

There's no Quine Vol II (yet) although using "Vol I" as the title for the first collection certainly does suggest that there will be more to come.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 18 April 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's meant to be Volume 1 of 'The Bootleg Tapes', like what Bob Dylan does.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Press Release says it offers us 'a front row seat' but we will look silly because everyone else is sitting at tables.

Nit nit nit, pick pick pick.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:14 (twenty-one years ago)

IS THIS WORTH $9.99 0N VINYL BRAND NEW

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Sunday, 18 April 2004 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

eleven months pass...
so has anyone something to say about that reissue with the bonus disc? i think it is the only official vu release i don't own. live at max's in the original version has a very bad sound quality but that's all right with me. it was recorded on tape by someone in the audience if i remember well. we are talking about the velvets here and they have to sound raw. are those bonus tracks versions worth it?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 26 March 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

I liked them.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Saturday, 26 March 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

The reissue is worth it for completists. It's kinda just more of the same in its relation to the original, even a few of the same songs done over. That said, I'd recommend either the original or the reissue to any Velvets fan, depending on how much money you wanna spend. The performance is one of my favorites despite the crappy sound. Moe Tucker isn't there which is a shame, but Lou is at the top of his game, with his quirky deadpan song introductions (I'm Waiting for the Man is "a tender folk song from the early fifties, about love between man and subway") and his vocals sound absolutely great, particularly on Femme Fatale. That guy could really sing . . . several decades ago.
