elusive 70s song

My sister wrote me this in an email yesterday:

I was reminded today of a pop song, of which I can remember neither the title or the singer. Not much to go on, I guess. All I remember is that it was good. It was a summer romance type of song, but not dirgy, quite upbeat. It was a solo male, probably a one hit wonder. I think it was late 70's. It talked about holidays, sand, sea etc, and it's driving me bonkers trying to recall it.

Not many clues, but she'd love you forever if you can help. Any suggestions gratefully received.

"Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks?

"Beach Baby" by First Class? "Do you remember back in old LA/ When everybody drove a chevrolet?" Oh, that's not a solo male. Dunno, then.

Aerosmith's cover of the Shangri-La's "remember (walkin' in the sand)" perhaps? not really that upbeat, though. Or is she thinking of "Summer Lovin'" from Grease? Not a solo male vocal, but otherwise fits the description. There's also "Summer Romance" by the Stones

Could it be "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes?

It fits your description, except for being good.

"I never will forget those nights, I wonder if it was a dream, remember how you made me crazy? remember how I made you scream?"

such a classic expression of longing .. oh, wait, Don Henley wrote that song in the early 80's ..

And it's kind of a dirge, in a pop sense. embarassing admission: when I was in middle school and early high school, when all I listened to was the radio, I had music-mixage tendencies even then .. but my material was so lackluster, I resorted to prog fantasies of segueing the instrumental portion of "Boys of Summer," with all the seagull-chirp sounds, into another pop dirge like Billy Joel's "Downeaster Alexa" ....

I can't believe I just told you all that. Admissions like this could be a whole other ILM topic .. forgive me for getting sidetracked.

Maybe "On and On" by Stephen Bishop. It's got pretty women and Jamaica, upbeat, solo male. Not sure about the "good" part, or why I remember it.

"It was a hot afternoon, the last day of June, and the sun was a demon". My guess is Summer (the first time) by Bobby Goldsboro. Not strictly a 1-hit wonder, but fits all the other criteria. (Dirgey? Naaahh.) Also, spookily enough, mentions a Chevrolet in the lyric.

'not stricly a one hit wonder'

well, he released about 20 albums and had multiple hits, so no!

Thank you to everyone who contributed. I think we have our answer. Arthur got it right, and sorry that you got a red herring with the solo male bit. Whether my sister really will love you forever is to be debated. But thanks anyway.

Well, I think I might just be able let your sister off the hook with that there pledge of eternal love, the lucky gal. Anyway, thanks for making me feel useful today, Daniel (and sister.)
