One Dove - Classic or Dud?

While digging around my pile of CDs, I came across "Morning Dove White", the one and only CD by One Dove, and it took me happily back to long train journeys in '93 playing it all the time, and various things struck me.

1) Just before Britpop came along and destroyed all that we knew and loved about the MM/NME, "MDW" was hailed as a classic post-club record, the 'natural' followup to "Screamadelica" (well, it was the Weatherall production job) and a way forward for music. I even remember Select magazine claiming it was one of the most important records of the decade in its 50th edition survey of the music world. And then Britpop came along and everyone forgot about it. Why? Am I the only person who liked it really?

2) Where the hell did One Dove go anyway? OK, so Dot Allison made a solo album a few years back which went down the toilet and the guitarist was from Altered Images, but Ian Carmichael was a superb bloke (judging by his forward looking production on the two Orchids LPs in '91 and '93) and deserved some credit for their music. Where is he now?

3) Without stepping into another thread (best opening lines etc), the intro to "Fallen" is utterly godlike. Sampled sighs, those incredible first few lines - "I don't know why I'm telling you any of this..." - and then when the bass and the drums and the phased string synths all kick in about two minutes in, it sounds like heaven on a plate. Allow me my indulgences, please!

So, anyone else remember this record? And isn't it odd how the sepia tone of the packaging almost slipped through into the record itself, as if the record as 'recorded' in sepia too?

They keep coming up every so often, and yes, they were quite good -- I seem to remember the big problem being that the album was finished but not released until one and a half years later or something. But at least it did come out, and for my part I'll always be a sucker for the chorus of "Breakdown." AAA. So nice.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I remember. I was underwhelmed at the time and sold the album. Sort of regret it now, since it wasn't bad at all, just needed the cash for new cd's. Of course can't find it nowadays. Ah well life goes on. Probably the hype did them in, they could never live up to the pre- release hype. I don't think Britpop killed them off, just that in dance music there really wasn't any room for One Dove at the time. Weatherall kinda lost it for awhile and on other the hand jungle and Aphex Twin ruled 1993. In a sense One Dove was too indie to succeed with the dance crowd and too dancey to succeed with the indie crowd. Or so it seemed in '93.

Omar, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's an album with a few great moments, the aforementioned Fallen and the guitar paradise mix of White love especially. But I think it has to be said that history has got it right overall. I don't hear their influence anywhere now. It's just a bit too polite. Not ethereal enough, not bangin' enough, not rocking enough and a bit too cool to really engage.

I think Dot Allison is married to one of the guys from Death in Vegas and she did the la la la's on dirge on the Contino Sessions.

Billy Dods, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

An estranged friend of mine has had my copy of "MDW" for ages, grrr! It's one of my favourite soundtracks to fuck.

Simon, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

fucking classic!

even though a record obviously inspired by it was better (Parrelel Life, by The Starseeds), most of what came next were just OD wannabies, like hooverphonic, delerium's latest crud and so forth

i haven't been too impressed by Dot's solo work, i'm still hoping they'll reunite one day

melted, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's a great record, but could do without the two different mixes each of the two singles. of course now there *is* a market for this sort of crossover (i.e. dance music with 'songs') stuff, but unfortunately it's satisfied by crap like Faithless

m jemmeson, Tuesday, 30 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll go with Rob M about the intro to "Fallen". I think it's all to do with 1993 being sort of the dividing line in the 90's. 1994 was whrere it all came together: the best jungle, Britpop, Tricky etc. It was the year that defined the rest of the decade and 1993 was forgotton in many respects, as a work in progress year. MDW was one of those double vinyl post Screamadelica dubwise monsters that sounded so right at that point but was then superseeded quickly enough. Listened to the whole record during the summer for the first time since it's release and found it dated but still cool. Just take it as it is really.

two years pass...
has dot allison released anything lately?

'afterglow' didn't really do it for me. the thing i loved most about 'morning dove white' was its lightness. the songs weren't all upbeat but listening to the album was a cheering experience. afterglow isn't really the same. i don't think i've manage to play it twice.

uh...revive...i guess... though i suspect this thread will slip quickly back down to the bottom of the page.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I got the (double) LP at a summer fayre for 50p last year, the sleeve a bit battered the albums mint. Played once or twice, very nice but one of those 'you had to have been there, on it, with the t-shirt' records.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The singles were great, the Nancy and Lee mix of Fallen is stunning - if you have the album on vinyl thas excellent too - on CD its somewhat truncated and doesnt have the full mixes.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I should minidisc it for the car...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Morning Dove White and Afterglow are both fantastic, after Afterglow Dot did We Are Science (spring 2002-ish) which was snarled at quite a lot for being supposed electroclash-bandwagon-leap (even though it wasn't really) and which I was underwhelmed by, and then really loved, and am now very underwhelmed by again, there's a big gaping chasm of nothing at the centre of that album, although Strung Out was a Proper Pop Hit (number 67!) and is wonderful and exhilerating, and the single version is lots better still.

Afterglow is the most blatant attempt at a kind of techno-Dusty thing ever ever but I fell for it totally, all classicist francophile-y luxuryheartbreak and Mo' Pop is entirely devotional and PERFECT and magnificent. As mentioned upthread MDW win-wins due to absolute lightness of touch and the singles are basically pre-emptive versions of the Afterglow tracks except fractionally less self-conscious about being all classic pop, and the ten minute cellophane yacht mixes are swirly churny perfection which make a virtue of not really going anywhere. So, it is brilliant and glorious really.

(not a Dot Allison thread as SUCH so apologies)

Alex in Leeds (Alex in Doncaster), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't this album meant to have been hacked up by the record company, at, at least that's the reason I've been given for delaying a Weatherall album at the peak of his popularity and the album having such autopsy construction. Apparently the original was briliant (but that's what they say about all lost albums), Screamadelica +++.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I read somewhere that the band objected to the Stephen Hague single mixes and were kind of furious that the label grafted them onto the final album and put them out as the singles etc. Although these tracks are so absolutely the best on the album that this seems like certain madness, kind of. I may have this all upside-down though.

Alex in Leeds (Alex in Doncaster), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:48 (twenty-two years ago)

There was a bunch of stuff recorded for a second LP too - some of it was even on the web on a fan page for a bit. Weren't as absolutely classic as MDW though. One Dove - total classic in my world.
Check their cover of Jolene on the B-Side of the awesome Why Don't You Take Me for more total cool.

Debord (Debord), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently the vinyl release of the album was pretty much as it was originally conceived they CD version is very different and much "poppier".

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

so it was a good 50p spend, then?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i loved em. loved the supreme pop side. and love the weirdo dubbed up excess .. the William Orbit mixes of the second single were fun.
would love to hear the Orig version of the lp was supposed to be far far better. i always wondered if this ever got leaked .. but twas pre-internet/cd days .. still one day. also Dots appearance on the King Of Woolworths (where for art thou .. ) was highlight of album.
so Classic all the way .. whether Pop/Electro/Dubby . biassed me ? nah .. objective ? nah. do i care ? nah ..

mark e (mark e), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost..
apparently the vinyl release of the album was pretty much as it was originally conceived they CD version is very different and much "poppier".

so, where does this leave those of us who had it on cassette? other than stuck in the early 90s..

oh, classic, by the way.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

classic! i hadn't listened to it in forever until i ripped the cd and the songs would come up on random play on my ipod. breakdown, transient truth and fallen sound amazing turned way up in the car. and i'll second that their cover of jolene is great too.

listen to the arab strap remix of dot allison's message personnel, it's great.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

'Afterglow' is a fantastic record, better overall than the One Dove record.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 16 March 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

so, alex, is that a recommendation for 'we are science' or not?? i suppose it isn't, really..

It isn't, no. Although is quite nice. But mostly kind of stiff anonymous sonic-lego-waft sort of thing.

'Afterglow' is a fantastic record, better overall than the One Dove record.

Listening to them now, it may well be so. The highlights of Morning Dove White probably top the best bits of Afterglow but only very slightly, and Afterglow is way way more consistent and is rich-rich velvety-clarity where MDW is murky and spectral and stuff. These are both really really exceptionally magnificent pop records, in fact.

just bought the flacs of the original "fallen" 12" on soma from the label's website... they sound great, less madonna and more spacy. plus, all this time you wonder who the angel in the song is, and it's holden caufield! i love the opening in the older version:

and the whole time he kept singing
and humming
i got up closer
so i could hear
what the hell he was singing
"if a body catch a body
coming through the rye"
what he was singing

f. hazel, Sunday, 3 August 2008 02:57 (seventeen years ago)

you know, flipping through the book... this song's lyrics are full of catcher in the rye quotes!

f. hazel, Sunday, 3 August 2008 03:09 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

I dug out the album and a few 12" lately (from the archives, as it were) and I have to say I've been rather impressed with how well the tunes hold up. It's a shame they didn't last longer because I think they had something special going for them (not just Weatherall). Also some great remixes (Secret Knowledge / Slam / etc) but unsurprisingly they haven't held up as well. Thoughts?

ABSOLUTELY NO SCRUBS WHATSOEVER, Monday, 19 October 2009 10:31 (sixteen years ago)

The sorta underwater dreaminess of "Sirens" is my favorite moment on this album, but overall I LOVE this record through and through. They got it just right, the Sarah Records melody meets pulsating dub meets breathy chanteuse cross pollination really worked for me on a bunch of levels. Still play this one a lot.

I can't remember if it was here on ilm or back on the fmbb, but stirmonster told me one time that Dot Allison bullied him in high school and now I think of that every time I listen to One Dove.

totally.

not heard this track properly in years.
old school 'trip hop' it may be, but damn, its rather lovely ..

oh, and i hope they never remaster this album and compress the f*ck out of it, as the sheer space and dynamics in the music sound soo good.

incredible song — I wonder if the Orbital bros had it in mind when they recorded 'The Box' a few years later. the US version of Morning Dove White is superior to the UK version if only because it includes an extended 9-minute version of 'My Friend'

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 18 February 2020 16:14 (six years ago)

They've been completely written out of history, right? You never see them mentioned anywhere, it's difficult to imagine much enthusiasm if they were to reform.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 17:01 (six years ago)

They were even left off of a big Weatherall mix that somebody posted onto Youtube yesterday as a tribute. It's a shame! I imagine Morning Dove White would be more highly regarded/remembered today if the band had stuck together for at least a couple more albums. Lot of good artists of that era (One Dove, Insides, Earthling, etc.) kind of hit it and quit it, and vanished from memory.

henry s, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 18:18 (six years ago)

I'd forgot that Ian Carmichael had been the producer for the Orchids, so that's another avenue to explore if you love Morning Dove White, it's generally a far cry from One Dove but sometimes...

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 18 February 2020 18:55 (six years ago)

As it happens I'm listening to the Orchids' Who Needs Tomorrow comp at the moment! I was not aware or had forgotten about the Ian Carmichael connection...

henry s, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 19:27 (six years ago)

Belated kudos to Dot Allison for getting Hal David to write a song on Afterglow by the way. Everybody's always all "Bacharach Bacharach Bacharach" and she ropes in the forgotten guy.

henry s, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 19:30 (six years ago)

i think part of the reason One Dove don't get the love re Weatherall, is cos the actual albums credits have very little mention of him.
and with all the extra record label touching up took away his ownership of it.
don't get me wrong, for all the record label bollox, i absolutely love the album.
both Weatherall, and Orbit were perfect for the sound of the album as they were both at the top of their respective games.
but i guess for many people it's not really regarded as an Andrew Weatherall produced album.

mark e, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 19:40 (six years ago)

I think I recall some interview with Weatherall at the time, along the lines of "you should have heard the original mixes, before the others got their mitts on 'em!" or some such. Have always hoped that if true, some kind of "director's cut" version of MDW would see the light of day, maybe as part of a legacy reissue. Not exactly holding my breath.

henry s, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 19:44 (six years ago)

It's pretty much all him though, isn't it? Stephen Hague did the radio mixes of White Love and Breakdown, but the rest is all Sabres of Paradise I thought.

I'd heard that the original vinyl release had a different mix from the CD versions (above and beyond the track differences between the US and UK CD versions) but can't afford a vinyl copy to find out.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 18 February 2020 19:47 (six years ago)

It's def a Weatherall/Sabres joint, but I have this recollection of him saying in the press that he felt the final product had been watered down somewhat.

Forgot that Jah Wobble played on the album!

henry s, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 19:57 (six years ago)

actually, i have just ventured into the hidden corners of the archive and checked GFSX and you are right.
the Orbit versions are on the cd singles.
apologies for the distraction.
in which case, why is this virtually ignored as part of Weatheralls catalogue as per Matts suggestion ?
and yeah, would love to hear the original version of the album, but i don't ever think its going to happen.

mark e, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 20:07 (six years ago)

Love this album so much, especially the cheese-pinnacle of “There Goes The Cure”.

Tim F, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 20:17 (six years ago)

It's def a Weatherall/Sabres joint, but I have this recollection of him saying in the press that he felt the final product had been watered down somewhat.

maybe he was talking about the pre-album 12" mixes of Fallen and Transient Truth... those are definitely different, way more dance than the album's headphones-on-the-couch vibe (which I vastly prefer, but you can see what he means)

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Tuesday, 18 February 2020 20:19 (six years ago)

I have that Sheer album as well (for some reason they also went by Sheer Taft.) Creation's brief venture into dance was pretty fruitful (Hypnotone, Love Corporation and of course the Weatherall remix of "Soon"!) I think Sheer may have actually predated Morning Dove White though. You're right though, very similar sound.

henry s, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 20:27 (six years ago)

ymo sumac (NickB), Tuesday, 18 February 2020 20:42 (six years ago)

michaellambert, Tuesday, 18 February 2020 20:43 (six years ago)

I picked up the vinyl LP used for a fair price ($25) in the last couple years and I think the mix is different. I don’t have the cd anymore, so can’t compare. Some of the mixes on the singles are better than the album versions for me though.

Enjoyed the lookback review in Pfork today. One of my all time favorite LPs. Currently listening to this fan-sourced collection of what might have been the second LP had it happened? https://albumsiwishexisted2.blogspot.com/2023/02/one-dove-moon-angel-1994.html

Happy to share if anyone would like to hear.
