Thank god for that recording . . .

We all have albums that we like and that we don't like. Some are our favourites and some not so much. What album comes to mind that you are so fucking glad the artist made it, you would kiss his or her ass until your lips got gangrene from all the circulation being cut off from puckering so long. Thank you so much for that record. Mine: Pink Floyd's simplistic and sci-fi psychedelic Wish You Were Here. The album, not the song. The fact that it has only five tracks makes it nice and evenly paced. Its most heavily played moments, right as I am going to bed. Welcome to the Machine and the title track are wonderful to dose off to, if not Shine on You. I decided to mention on alternative to the countless Def Leppard and Rush albums I would have tried to choose from.

"Bryter Layter", not because it's my favorite album ever, but because I'd get to kiss Nick Drake.

For me, it's Silkworm's Libertine. I've seen a few mentions of this band around here, all of which were negative - I have a feeling that the detractors are only familiar with the bands Matador/Touch & Go output - none of which featured Joel R.L. Phelps (with the exception of an EP). In a way, it kind of reminds me of The Band, in that there are several singers/songwriters in the band, each of which has their own unique, yet similar voice/style. They all sort of blend into one cohesive whole. The first dozen or so times I heard this band (which was when In The West came out), I thought there was just one singer. Turns out that there were 3. Anyway, Libertine had quite an impact on me - it started several years of obsession with Silkworm/Joel Phelps, of which I'm still heavily in the throes of. A good portion of their post-Joel Phelps material (he left after Libertine) is not that stellar, but everything that man has touched is gold, in my eyes. This years Inland Empires(5 covers and one original - perhaps the most moving, saddest song, ever), Blackbird from a few years ago (his most Crazy Horse influenced work since leaving Silkworm), 3 (sparse, quiet Low-ish country), and Warm Springs Night (kind of an Alt-Country Joy Division) - all rank amongst my favorites. I know a lot of my love for these albums stems from my peckish fanboyism, but there really is some great stuff to be found here. If anyone is interested, there are a bunch of reviews (some of which members of this board probably wrote) that I've stolen and archived at my now abandoned Joel Phelps fansite: http://www.waxecstatic.com/downertrio/

Ah, Silkworm are a fine band. Anyone who appreciates early Comsat Angels like they do are obviously Good People.

pere ubu's first one and 1/2 singles.

Not necessarily the most championed record in their career, but the one that really opened my eyes up to the possibilities available.

Sean Carruthers, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't necessarily think of it as among my favorite records--it's not even my favorite of his (that would probably be _Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)_)--but I'm incredibly glad that Brian Eno's _Before and After Science_ exists. Every time I pull it down and put it on, I can feel my brain stretching in neat ways.

Not sure about the kissing, but I'm most grateful for Colossal Youth.

dan, Monday, 29 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Vauxhall and I-Morrissey

I want to give him a big fucking hug and thank you every time i'm done listening to it. It's the only record in my cd collection that made me feel like thanking the artist for thier effort, it's like a gift he made for his fans.

Now if he can only come out with some new material...

I'd say Never Mind The Bollocks, but I have no desire to kiss any of them. So maybe I'll second "Be My Baby" - Ronnie Spector was pretty hot back then, after all.

Sorry I am a megalomaniac. It is not one but ten records (or 6 cds). Keith Jarrett's "Sun Bear Concerts" which he recorded in 1976 in Japan. My first true love. Wonderfully sad melodies and terrible disharmonic sounds alternate. Only piano improvisation and some moaning by Jarrett.
