Echobelly: Echo + Belly? C or D?

My girlfriend played this the other day. I think it was pretty cool. Knowing nothing about them, I said, "Hey, did they break up to form Echo and Belly" and she goes, "Yeah. No, what? I don't think so." I don't think so either. But, clearly, we know jack shit about this band. It's happy stuff, though. I liked it. Wonder what album it was. Hmmm.

Sonya touched my hair at a gig. They were opening for Electrafixion (Echo reference, haha!). Britpop was a lovely era. Since I do not want to sound like the 'belly specialist, I'll stop this now.

god they were so dud. i think i had the misfortune of seeing them do an acoustic set at a Melody Maker party thing. dire!

They had a few good singles. "Great Things", I think it was called. And "King Of The Kerb". Other than that, a big old dud.

"Blur, Oasis, Echobelly, Pulp, Supergrass - they're the big five of Britpop, aren't they?" - Harry Hill

Capable of the odd decent riff ("Car Friction" springs to mind), but not especially crucial. Sonya was (and presumably still is) lovely, however.

I went to the echobelly website last night. The CD that we have isn't even listen on the discography. It's really old, I guess.

I thought echobelly were okay. They mostly got noticed because they had a hot lead singer though. Didn't madonna have a cruch on her or something at one point?

We should stop saying "were". Apparantly, there's new stuff just released or coming soon.

If their albums are chock full of gems as shiny as "King of the Kerb" then the just might be classic. But, being a Yank, "King of the Kerb" is the only Echobelly track I've ever heard.

Total guilty pleasure band. They made perfectly average good mid- 90's Britpop, but were never exciting enough to get very far amid the competition. I don't think there's a genuinely bad track in the entirety of their first two albums. They came up with decent hooks, had big and crunchy guitars, and never got too self- indulgent.

Everyone's Got One is a decent record with lots of feminist lyrics and a bouncy melodicism that's kept up straight to the end.

The second album On is more of the same, but I think I like it a little better because the bombast is toned down a bit. I still haven't heard the third album.

I was going to say a ditto on the guilty pleasures thing, but sod it, no apologies: I thought they were the biz. ho hum. i really did though. Fab pop songs, belted out lyrics, some not too stoopid lyrics, yes a vocalist with more looks than is really fair in the real world, and a more than competent lead guitarist.

Shiny (I can't imagine the world without me) and not so shiny pop (Bellyache). Probably the last standard indie band i really liked. Good b-sides and good live too. I was bored by the third album though.

I seem to recall they were in the canon of "curse of morrissey" bands. i.e. mozzer mentioned he quite liked them, and soon after they floped out of sight.

I really loved an early single of theirs, the name of which I can't for the life of me remember now -- probably not a sign in the 'belly's favor.

"King of the Kerb?"

Lord Custos, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nope, didn't like that one.

The only line I can remember is "No sleep at all, carry me home". Anyone?

Nicole, Wednesday, 31 October 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That song would be "Insomniac".

Their first single maybe. Not sure. It's on their first album.

one month passes...
Greetings and salutations. The only album that I own by Echobelly is "ON". It's a great album. It's got King of the Kerb on it. I really like their sound, they remind me of the Cranberries a little bit. Anyway. I plan on getting some of their other albums. I think all of the songs on "ON" have a similiar sound to them and similiar guitar riffs. But the driving chorus on a few of the songs really takes them into another realm and sets them apart from the filler songs. "Worms and Angels" is good. I really like one song but I don't have the play list in front of me. I happened on them by accident. I had never heard of them. I gave my friend back home the new U2 CD "All that you can't leave behind" and in a kind gesture he hooked me up with the EchoBelly CD. Must say I like what I hear. Peace.

i must say that the songs "worms and angels", "Car fiction" as well as "Go away" are undoubtedly a few of of the better tracks on their second album "On".on the whole, the album "On" is worth listenning.
