Criminally Overlooked

"Criminally Overlooked" has become a bit of a cliche' in the world of rock journalism.

I consistently see the words used to describe the Go-Betweens and the Jazz Butcher.

What does "Criminally Overlooked" mean? Who is genuinely overlooked?

I'd say that "Criminally Overlooked" is different from "Underrated" - "Underrated" means they're better than the credit they get. "Criminally Overlooked" means, while they may be rated highly by critics and fans, they should be much bigger & more successful than they are.

I was going to say THAT, Pinefox! Anyway, I thought they'd be just up your street. Why don't you like them?

So does this mean that being "criminally overlooked" is based primarily on record sales? If a band that is "criminally overlooked" should be bigger and more successful, is it insinuating that it is bizarre that a certain band isn't more popular because they are just as accessible as other popular bands? For example, in the early to mid nineties one might propose that the Sundays were criminally overlooked in the US in exchange for the Cranberries. Both bands provided similar product, but the Sundays just didn't get as big as the Cranberries...

He doesn't like them because he thinks they're 'melodically challenged' and an inferior version of the Psychedelic Furs. What you have to remember is that he is deranged.

On the local college station (WXPN) they like to drop in tracks by Richard Thompson, and after a truly impressive Thompson track the DJ would say "the Criminally Obscure...Richard Thompson"; I do see where they are coming from. The guy's lyrics are *almost* as good as Dylan or Elvis Costello (and as venomous as either). I suspect itshis guitar-playing that makes him too weird for Top 40. His guitar styling errily mimic the sound of different Celtic-folk instruments (fiddle, Uillean pipes, mandolin) and that might be a bit too "interesting" for your local AD/DC station.
