Ok, this has been bugging me for years.

It was a big hit in (continental) Europe circa 1981. I first heard it in Germany around then. It certainly wasn't sung in English, although about four years afterwards I heard Annie Nightingale play an English-language version of it on Radio 1 on her (then) request show.

Uptempo, synth-pop with a catchy chorus, but still a bit teutonic for all that. I can recall how the first two bars of the chorus went. Since on-line humming is tricky, here's a graphic representation of the rhythm:

And I think the associated pitches are, respectively: B, D, D, C-B A

The next two bars of the chorus are similar, but a bit higher in pitch, I think.

Please help end my torment. Thanks.

Unfotunately, internets don't allow us access to your personal files unless you go online permanently as a server or summat. You have to upload it to an online pic site (like Your Photos) and then remote link it here.

Ah, ok. Thanks, kodanshi. I'll have another go at putting in an image next week when I have a bit more time.

In the meantime, one more clue: the singer (male) almost sounds like he's yodelling the chorus.

It was a bit a-ha 'Take on Me'-ish now I come to think about it. But several years before them, obviously. I'll shut up now.

Don't have the facilities to hear the track, sadly, but what you're describing sounds suspiciously like it could be Trio, of "Da Da Da" and "LaB Mich Rein, LaB Mich Raus" early '80s fame. Their allmusic.com profile could be handy (and is pretty amusing), or alternatively you could maybe try here for a bit of research: http://www.ichwillspass.de/ndw/cdcheck.htm

Thanks, Charlie! Not sure if it's Trio (the production as I recall was huge-sounding - a world away from the minimalist sound of 'Da Da Da'), however it could well have been a "Neue Deutsche Welle" artist. Anyone know where I can find online mp3 extracts of the 'hits' from this scene? I don't mean filesharing sites - can't use 'em - I mean somewhere like CDNow.

I've found it at last! Nice start to the New Year.

It's "Major Tom (I'm Coming Home)" by Peter Schilling. Now you can all tell me how crap my descriptions above were.

Incidentally, I found it because an mp3 of a grebt cover version by The Space Lady has been posted (until end of today only, I think) here:

Well whaddaya know...

I remember trying to figure this out when you first posted it. It was that whole sung in German part that threw me off, because I've only ever heard the english version - but it's a great song! No wonder you were looking for it.
